TTL Group Stage Results: Relegations/Promotions

I have been thinking about why I agree that ordering players in the group stage feels more fair than ordering by number of wins.

I think I understand why the tournament organizers chose to order the players by number of wins. They naturally want more high-stakes content, and they want the third game when it is 2-0 to have the same emotional valence as when it is 1-1, so they make all games have equal value regardless of when it is played. But for me it doesn't work. When someone is up 2-0, I think they have won; and although intellectually I know that the stakes haven't changed, emotionally I consider the match settled.

And the reason I consider the match settled is because that is how it works in every other tournament I have ever watched. I am not going to suddenly switch my emotional responses to things because one tournament has generated an innovation in order to make the casters' content more compelling. In fact, when I realize why they might be doing this, I get annoyed, because I get the sense that they are trying to emotionally manipulate me for their own purposes.

I actually think that play-all-three is a great format, and that using number of wins as a tie-breaker makes a lot of sense for giving the last game some weight. I also think most players are competitive enough to make the last game strong even in a 2-0 situation. But I find ordering on number of games won to be less fair than on number of sets won because for me it is a seemingly arbitrary innovation without sufficient justification.

1st place of Gold promoted directly/ 6th Platinum demoted

2 best 2nd place of Gold directly promoted/ 2 worst 5th place platinum directly demoted

2 worst 2nd place Gold against 2 best 5th Platinum

Yeah exactly, the only other tournament that I'm aware of with a similar format was Rise of the Elephants and that ended with a very strange tie between Suomi (4-0, 13-7) and aM (3-1, 13-7). I'm sure if you asked anyone on aM they'd say that Suomi won. Strange to see it implemented here as well but at least it seems like the settings aren't set in stone for future seasons.

Regardign the format, I would like to have fewer groups (ideally even just one table) and have the league played over a longer period of time. I guess the downside is it's probably less profitable from a business perspective

Not sure about that is less profitable, if you check football leagues, all of them has one league and usually they are more profitable than national cups. Even clubs are trying to turn Champions League (although it is named as league, it is still a cup format) into a league branded as Super League.

On the other hand we have ECL in AOE2, which didn't yield expected profit with a league format.

Gold league groups C and D end up with 3 members of each group being promoted.
Very tough look with an AW deciding a promotion to platinum league, I guess Vivi had sleep issues or something.

If not showing up for an interview nets you a $300 fine I wonder what not showing up to a qualifying match in the inaugural season of AoE's only league will get you. Disqualified from next season, hopefully.

With robo as admin, I expect some punishment, but missing out on the chance to go to the Platinum League is already the biggest punishment. He would have had to beat Kingstone, but would have been the clear favourite.

The promoted players look like they are weaker than the relegated players, but most of them have improved greatly in 2022, so they might be even stronger next year. That will be interesting to see.
