Tournament Madness

Is it just me, or have AoE II tournaments just exploded recently?

This past week alone, we have results for Ayre Masters Series II: Arabia, Rage Forest 3, Copa Wallace, and Torneo Nacional Español, with only the third-place showdown left for HunLeague. Not to mention the Resurgence qualifiers.

And four events with prize pools and open registration added just this week: USA Cup, Only Land Cup, Ragnarök, and Saladin Showdown.

It's exhausting keeping up!

Wouldn't say it's an especially recent phenomenon. Not long ago we had Return of the Clans, Master of HyperRandom, Master of Socotra 2 and World Rumble all within a relatively short space of time of each other (as well as various other tournaments, e.g. Deep Waters Pro League). Think there's plenty of great stuff going on at most times!

But what I was talking about was not what is going on at any given time, which, given the length of some of the tournaments (Copa Wallace took almost six months!), is not surprising to have many at the same time. What I was talking about was the ends of the funnel, with a lot of things wrapping up and a lot of things beginning. In ecological terms, it is not having a lot of biomass, but having a lot of productivity that is important, so that is what I was trying to express.

I also wonder if there is some cyclical thing in tournament planning, making for waves of activity at some points and troughs at others. I did notice that Only Land Cup and Ragnarök are scheduled to finish the same day!

From my experience, its likely 2 factors:

1. Any project that has money involved (even from direct donators) hardly props up in 2-3 months. usually, 4, can easily be 6 months from idea to day 1 of the event. Some events might have started last year and got around to now, others might have been in the works for a few months. Timing is funny like that.

2. The "tournament calendar", sure, most people and TOs don't have access to a calendar, but there is still a rough idea of what that calendar looks like by just realizing that almost every month has had an A/S tier event,

I think most TOs (at least what happens with me) see no major events announced with a long runway (2-3 months) and think that something might be coming. If something is, cool, I can put the event a little after that to avoid conflicts. If nothing came by, well at least I didn't run a conflict and then got pushed out.
