They only get a little more from ads, subs are still around 50-50(subs with prime gives like 30 cents more) that has also been discussed before on twitch forums when the affiliates got the option to get money from ads, basically the tiny line between those 2 is smaller, now the difference is about having transcoding always enabled and 3 slots for animated emotes.

Partners get 50/50 from subs unless they're big enough to negotiate an individual deal.

Partners get at least 60/40 deals and usually they get 70/30 from subscriptions.

No, default is 50/50 and it's actually fairly hard to get something better than that until your stream is quite big

Read heartt's comment, memb was on twitch when it was justintv, he is basically a founder, probably that is why hes got a better deal, but 50-50 is the norm, prime subs gives 30 cents more so that is basically 55-45 only because of that

So yeah streamers are leaving twitch cause they can make more money from subs, ads, bits or stars and a huge contract, it is a win win for them, also fb gaming content appears in normal fb video browsing giving a much larger audience and promotion.

The dates point out to a clearly huge investment from microsoft and fb to promote aoe4, i wouldn't be surprised if they have to stream certain hours of aoe4 content.

Objectively Twitch compared to YT has :
a ) inferior player
b ) terrible moderation
c ) worse deals for the creators ( from what I've read here )
d ) smaller usebase overall?
e ) better emotes only xD

It's good that different platforms try to battle the monopol because it will only help creators who are being ripped off by Twitch.

Agree with everything apart from from point d)

Of course YouTube has a much bigger audience than Twitch, but on Twitch everyone enjoys watching Live Streams while on YouTube only a fraction of the users (as of now...) watch gaming live streams.

So in absolute terms, I would assume Twitch most likely still has a larger live-stream audience than Youtube.

Today there are several contracts that exist. Everything can be found in the FAQ of twitch.

50/50 For all streamers and then when you reach a certain number of "paid" subs so excluding prime and excluding gifted, over a period of 3 months, you can renegotiate your contract to get a better rate. 60/40 and 70/30

Before the 60/40 didn't exist, and since like 6 months, they added this level for the same conditions as the 70/30 before.

I think what the example of Valkyrae proves is that if you are a good content creator who starts streaming on YT you have a good chance of tapping into those people who would usually not tune into your streams because they are YT-only users.
I think the people in the AoE2 community who have strong YT-only followings, in particular T90 and TheViper, would likely be able to attract significant audiences if they were to stream there.

That said, I think with YT it's better to wait and see how actually commited they are to improving the platform(you know how it is with Google products typically..). They have added quite a few great additions in the past months(including clips!) and there are seemingly going to add things like gifting memberships in the near-future, but there are still a lot of things they need to do before being able to meaningfully compete with Twitch's platform.

OT: This announcement just made me a bit sad. AoE2 content creators being split over many platforms is a loss for everyone, especially when one of those platforms is Facebook. I'm a big fan of both T90 and Viper's, but I struggle to see how I'm ever going to be able to catch their streams from now on, except for some big tournament finals or something.
I don't see how that isn't just a big loss for the entire community, but I'm happy for both of them individually; hope they make good use of their time on FB.

I am not particularly afraid of this happening because he already publicly refused an offer and it would also just be stupid. He has the most viewers to gain as the undisputed #1 player that regularly streams on twitch now.

Also people thinking that YT and FB live streaming is going to overtake twitch any time soon are wrong. Twitch is about 5 bigger then YouTube live and YouTube was even shrinking recently. For Facebook if they where so great people would stream there without getting paid. (But it has slightly more viewers then YT, but FB is known to misrepresent data)

YouTube does have quite a few advantages. Off the top of my head, a few are:
  • Higher bitrates (so 1440p and 4k streams are feasible)
  • Ability to turn off ads completely
  • Better revenue share by default (70/30 compared to 50/50)
  • 5 customizable "membership" tiers (instead of $5, $10, and $25 subs like Twitch, you can have 5 tiers from $0.99 to $99.99)
  • Easier ability to rewind and rewatch earlier parts of the stream
  • Ability to schedule streams ahead of time and play preview videos before they start
  • No 24 hour exclusivity period (Twitch Affiliates agree to have their content exclusive to Twitch for 24 hours after it's streamed, so you're not supposed to go and repost it immediately to YouTube)
From what I can tell the big things YouTube streaming is missing right now are the community features. Like the ability to gift subs and to host/raid other streamers. Those are pretty important for building a community, particularly for Age where most streamers raid each other.

Streaming is one of many things YouTube does, while it's basically the only thing Twitch does. In some ways this is good: if you're a content creator making videos, shorts, community posts, streams, and stories, then you keep them all in one place and take advantage of all of the YouTube features. But live streaming isn't the main focus of YouTube like it is for Twitch, and at least right now lots of YouTube users probably aren't even interested in watching streams.

Up until fairly recently (i.e. within the last year) I ran a Celeron NUC as my HTPC and while YouTube generally ran okay, Twitch was completely unusable. It's okay now I've upgraded to an i3 NUC but yikes Twitch is bloated and that kinda colours my view of it. The thing is good enough to play uncompressed Blu-ray rips but Twitch was evidently a bridge too far.

That said, I'm a lurker on streams just as I'm pretty much a lurker here, so I'm not interested in any aspect of the streaming experience other than watching the video itself. To that end, it really doesn't matter what platform a streamer is on provided it's not mandatory to register to simply view content. If it wasn't for giving out the monthly Prime sub, I'd have no real reason to be logged into my Twitch account, or to even have one in the first place. Ultimately I guess I'm simply not the target audience regardless of platform.

I just found this on Twitch:

It's not even close to being as good as YT insta rewind, but -if it's new- it looks like they're trying to do something about it.

Agree with mystarey. My (rather old) PC can smoothly handle 1440p on YouTube (if it uses vp09 codecs - avc01 are significantly worse and only work well in 720p) but on twitch i lose lots of frames and have visible lag/stutter even with 720p. AoE is a game which really wants 1080p quality with all the units, text, details... so i don't watch twitch too often. Not to mention i find site's culture absolutely cancerous with all those ugly deformed faces and spam. Admittedly AoE side is much better, probably due to it being relatively small and popular with older audience but twitch culture still seeps in.
In that sense, i don't really care where Viper and T90 stream, as long as they post content on YouTube and there is content in the first place - AoE 4 is very worrying.
Hopefully MbL will pick up his YT game, I trust his loyalty to AoE 2 more than others

I wouldn't be so sure. Twitch is bigger right now. But it also has a lot less potential for growth than YouTube which has pretty much unlimited potential - all it has to do is change its algorithm to recommend more streams. The machine learning and perfecting the scripts takes time. Keep in mind YouTube already has lots of data about what people like and many users are quite satisfied with their "Recommended" suggestions. Twitch doesn't have a comparable system at all.
YouTube is putting in more effort into developing its streaming recently. For example the teaser of sub gifting, a feature that is important for many viewers, will be coming to YouTube - but it isn't there yet. YouTube is also convincing a lot of big streamers (like, the very top) to move from twitch - and from what I gathered, does so with quality of service, unlike FaceBook which is forced to straight up buy streamers with impossible-to-refuse offers even though both parties know everything beside $ will be worse on FB. Very different situation. YouTube has both the biggest userbase/potential for growth and also by far the best technical background. I wouldn't be surprised if in five years YouTube leads the streaming market, followed by Facebook (if they make the user experience less horrible...) and Twitch lags behind in third place.
Twitch doesn't seem to be getting any support from Amazon whatsoever in recent times. It's bleeding content creators and apparently can't afford convincing them to stay. It has been operating at loss for years and the profit oriented Amazon seems unwilling to invest even more than it already does.
