Microsoft isn't even trying to hide what their goal is: To bring all those millions of Vietnamese AOE 1 players to AOE 2. You get all the AOE 1 civs, with all AOE 2 QoL improvements and as an extra: Vietnamese civ. It's Conquerors and Koreans all over again. Lol.

I don't care though, I've had always a soft spot for AOE 1. Playing with AOE 1 with all AOE 2 features is a dream for me.

I doubt that's even true. Whenever I see fan suggestions it's stuff like Mississippians or Jurchens or splitting Slavs...etc. Nobody requested Romans, what are they smoking?

Hate the idea of adding Romans to AoE 2. It's always been a game about medieval times (with Huns being somewhat edgy I guess...). Romans just don't fit. What's gonna be next? Americans and George Washington's campaign? 0/10 - would never buy.

In the end I probably won't buy. Hope there won't be any Romans in ranked multi.

Personally I don't care much for Rome as a civ but getting to play a version of "AoE2" that is different from the main version sounds interesting to me it's like a alternative universe AoE2, so I just hope they don't try to be to close to AoE1 so we can have a new experience.

Half the list should have just been part of the AoE1 definitive addition. That they don't even have a spectator mode is just beyond ridiculous.

The reason is that AOE1 DE was made as nothing but a test on how to make a DE version of the AOE games. People forget that the game was a microsoft store exclusive for like an entire year and a half, and the game flopped terribly because of that. By the time it came on steam, forgotten empires was totally focused on AOE2 DE and since the game had no fanbase at all, because Vietnam was still playing the 1997 version, they didnt even got any DLC to get some money from it. Also AOE1 is well know for having awful pathfinding, so i guess fixing the spaghetti code of the Definitive edition was more expensive than just porting the game to AOE2.

Makes sense, I personally would buy the DLC, since aoe 1 was the first game I played on PC (I was like 5) and it was a dream for me have some aoe 2 features on aoe 1 (e.g gates)

I'm a bit sad that we won't see Romans in ranked. I'd really loved to see them there with the same bonuses they've in AOE1. Faster attacking swordsmen and buildings cost less wood, AOE2 already has those, but AOE2 doesn't have the third one and probably for a very good reason: Towers cost -40%. I can only imagine the panic, tears, rage if one civ would get that bonus. It would be fun to witness.

Imagine towers costing 20 wood and 50 stone. 4 towers with starting stone.

I wouldn't even call the Rome one a "crossover civ". In all likelihood, it's just that there's the Roman civ in AoE1, and there's also a Western Roman civ in AoE2. But that'll have to be built from the ground up to fit within the AoE2 balance.

Nope. They want to balance it first. They explain it in the Masmorra's interview:

I don't know how good Romans are in AOE2. I've been only playing RoR side, because that's the only thing I was interested in in this expansion.

I'll love to try aoe1 in there sometime later, but that isn't the priority. I wanted to have Romans, and was EXPECTING new campaigns, at least one with Romans in it.

Because it's not what you bought. it's AOE1 civs in Age2, Romans is just a bonus and you should know what you buy before you do it.

The RoR campaigns are not bad, you should try them. Hadn't played AoEde before and it playing the campaigns seemed more than a nice mod to AoE2 than another game, once you get used to the units dynamics, which basically for me were spam hoplite line unless you can spam horse archer 11
