Announcement​

Are you ready for the most outstanding and prodigious event in the history of Age of Empires? We have teased you enough and are now ready to reveal what we have been brewing behind the scenes. Red Bull Wololo started back in early 2020 and pioneered the use of Empire Wars in major tournaments. The fast-paced, action-packed game mode quickly took off, and we had so many incredible moments spanning through the initial Red Bull Wololo all the way to Red Bull Wololo V in late 2021. As time went on, the events only got bigger and better, and here we are, in 2022, and we are about to blow you away.
To celebrate the twenty-fifth anniversary of Age of Empires, we are announcing not one, not two, but three tournaments. You will get to experience the original game that started the entire franchise back in 1997 - the original Age of Empires. You will also get to experience the arguably most influential game in the franchise's history, Age of Empires II - originally released back in 1999. Finally, the newest edition in the franchise, the incredible Age of Empires IV.

Once again, we will go back to Castle Heidelberg in Germany for the offline event spanning from the 21st to the 30th of October. During these days, you will experience the main event of both Age of Empires II and IV as well as the finals of all three events during the last two days - the 29th and 30th of October.

But what exactly is at stake here? Well, we have a total prize of a whopping $550,000.00 distributed among the three games, as shown below.

• Age of Empires I: $50,000.00
• Age of Empires II: $200,000.00
• Age of Empires IV: $300,000.00

Invitations & Qualification​

Age of Empires II​

For Age of Empires II, you will see the return of all the previous conquerors. Mr_Yo, the champion of the original Red Bull Wololo. Liereyy, the only champion with two victories under his belt, Red Bull Wololo II and IV. DauT, the champion of Red Bull Wololo III. And finally, TheViper, the champion of Red Bull Wololo V. These players have proven themselves to be fierce warriors and have earned a direct invitation to the main event.

Other players must prove themselves worthy in different events leading up to the main event, as well as the two open qualifiers taking place from the 20th to the 21st of August and the 27th to the 28th of August.

Age of Empires IV​

For Age of Empires IV, we're looking back to N4C to find our champions, and with that, Beastyqt, the winner of N4C, and Leenock, the runner-up, will already be waiting to meet everyone else that qualifies in Castle Heidelberg.

Other players must prove themselves worthy in tournaments leading up to the main event, as well as an extensive qualification event, Road to Red Bull held by EGC.

I sincerely hope we can make this one of the greatest events ever. I'm aware of the commotion there has been following the release of Age of Empires IV, but remember that we are celebrating the franchise as a whole and the incredible history our beloved games have. We can't wait to share even more details with you soon.

As someone who is ranked top 50 in EW TGs. I for one am excited to grind some more and make my way to Germany and play in this event

 

Absolutely insane news for AOE2, interesting dilemma for Viper and Hera on how to split their time.

Tens of thousands of dollars depending if they go all in on one game or try to play both at a world class level.

 

Hera is 100% not gonna play AOE4 in the tournament though. He said he hates it.

There's enough money to be gained in the AOE2 tournament that putting yourself through torture for playing a game you hate isn't worth the extra bucks.

I can't imagine the dilemma of the hardcore AoEZoner now, torn between crying about AoE 4 getting 300k and celebrating AoE 2 still receiving an amazing prize pool and LAN.

Amazing news. Hopefully this event is a showcase for AoE II and the power of the community and convinces Microsoft to prioritize it as the flagship game of the franchise going forward.

You don't see the pros playing in an AoE2 S-tier event smile all that often either.

Also, while AoE3 DE has the smallest player base and hasn't been getting much love from tournament organizers compared to other AoE games, it gets, as far as I see, the most frequent and substantial updates by far. I remember when it first came out it only got like 55% positive reviews on Steam but now it's 78% positive with recent reviews being 92% positive. Shoutout to the passionate AoE3 DE developers who despite a less than ideal release still managed to improve it tirelessly.

 

This is (by far) the biggest Aoe2 tournament in history and I am very much looking forward to it.

Somehow this is only now dawning on me.

Before this, The War is Coming (2014) was the biggest tournament with a prize pool of 120k.
And that was a TG tournament!

This will completely shatter that record and will be a 1v1 event!

I really hope Yo can make it but I'm not too optimistic as the authority has not been reasonable recently, they restrict all the visa issuing and generally do not allow their people to leave the country.

They made it more difficult to leave, but people with genuine reasons e.g. work and in-person study at foreign universities still can do so. I think with some help from Red Bull e.g. a letter confirming that Yo is leaving for work he may be able to go.

Although I guess getting back in afterwards would be a nightmare.

I also hope he can make it, this is going to be the tournament of the decade for AOE2.

 

I'm surprised no one is talking about the Invite-Spots yet (for the aoe2 part ofc).
The 8 Qualifier-Spots and the 4 Invite-Spots for previous winners are clear, but then we have 4 Spots which are given based on Tournament performances like the best performing Player in Resurgence (not neccesarily the winner, since if Yo wins the other finalist get's the spot).

Since the Qualifiers are happening at the end of august it makes only sense to have those 3 other Spots taken before end of august, means proly 3 more yet not announced S-Tier 1vs1 Tournaments happening before end of August.

I do wonder what those Tournaments will be since NAC and KotD are very very unlikely, could it actually be HC5? Maybe also RBW6? Another Open Classic by Viper? Or somehting completely new/unexpected?

Does anyone have good perspective on how much of an effect switching games in a tournament has on high level players? I really like the idea of an event that brings together the different games in the franchise, but should we expect this to impact the performance of people who are trying to compete in 2 games, and if so how significantly?

From what Viper says: yes, big impact. He won't be able to stay competitive in both games at the same time. Therefore he'll focus on AoE2, and if he's qualified for AoE4 he'll participate but won't train at all (he'll just keep up to date with how the meta is developing)
