Announcement

Are you ready for the most outstanding and prodigious event in the history of Age of Empires? We have teased you enough and are now ready to reveal what we have been brewing behind the scenes. Red Bull Wololo started back in early 2020 and pioneered the use of Empire Wars in major tournaments. The fast-paced, action-packed game mode quickly took off, and we had so many incredible moments spanning through the initial Red Bull Wololo all the way to Red Bull Wololo V in late 2021. As time went on, the events only got bigger and better, and here we are, in 2022, and we are about to blow you away.
To celebrate the twenty-fifth anniversary of Age of Empires, we are announcing not one, not two, but three tournaments. You will get to experience the original game that started the entire franchise back in 1997 - the original Age of Empires. You will also get to experience the arguably most influential game in the franchise's history, Age of Empires II - originally released back in 1999. Finally, the newest edition in the franchise, the incredible Age of Empires IV.

Once again, we will go back to Castle Heidelberg in Germany for the offline event spanning from the 21st to the 30th of October. During these days, you will experience the main event of both Age of Empires II and IV as well as the finals of all three events during the last two days - the 29th and 30th of October.

But what exactly is at stake here? Well, we have a total prize of a whopping $550,000.00 distributed among the three games, as shown below.
  • Age of Empires I: $50,000.00
  • Age of Empires II: $200,000.00
  • Age of Empires IV: $300,000.00

Invitations & Qualification

Age of Empires II

For Age of Empires II, you will see the return of all the previous conquerors. Mr_Yo, the champion of the original Red Bull Wololo. Liereyy, the only champion with two victories under his belt, Red Bull Wololo II and IV. DauT, the champion of Red Bull Wololo III. And finally, TheViper, the champion of Red Bull Wololo V. These players have proven themselves to be fierce warriors and have earned a direct invitation to the main event.

Other players must prove themselves worthy in different events leading up to the main event, as well as the two open qualifiers taking place from the 20th to the 21st of August and the 27th to the 28th of August.
You can already sign up for the open qualifiers here and here.

Age of Empires IV

For Age of Empires IV, we're looking back to N4C to find our champions, and with that, Beastyqt, the winner of N4C, and Leenock, the runner-up, will already be waiting to meet everyone else that qualifies in Castle Heidelberg.

Other players must prove themselves worthy in tournaments leading up to the main event, as well as an extensive qualification event, Road to Red Bull held by EGC.
Registration and more information regarding this can be found here.

I sincerely hope we can make this one of the greatest events ever. I'm aware of the commotion there has been following the release of Age of Empires IV, but remember that we are celebrating the franchise as a whole and the incredible history our beloved games have. We can't wait to share even more details with you soon.

For streamers, broadcasters, content creators and so on - I'm not able to share much information regarding streaming policies as of right now. I'll be sure to provide more information as soon as it becomes available. Feel free to reach out to me on Discord, and I'll take note of your interest for later. I know some people have already reached out regarding this, but please do so again now that the event has been properly announced. You can reach me at Chrazini#5687, thank you.

For additional information, go to redbull.com/wololo.

Wow, this one is big. Hope this brings the community together and shuts down some of the stupid debates we had over the past between the games. Lets celebrate that Age of Empires as a whole is at this stage and we have a hell of a lan event ahead <3

Yeah it's a bit of a shame and miss on a great opportunity, not sure why MS wouldn't push for it (or well... on that note, very curious on Microsoft's involvement, could help understand), kind of sad to even just see all the games flaring on the Discord with news and III... Well, we know how it goes (no need to mention AoM that was brought up often as theory, you guys don't much know what's up with that game, it is like hated by Microsoft or something, which has to do with EE and its justified reception by the community, that will be brought up only when it's time to rake in the cash with DE or needs to push something in the other games).

Otherwise you can have all kinds of theories, but with AoEIII obviously missing, there is a reason, maybe simply based on name and situation and such it doesn't fit timeline-wise, because they need/want AoEIV as the last, main entry, and AoEIII is time-wise after it, so with Legacy, it looks strange to have the main title still followed by another, making it maybe from some points of view confusing, so III being unlucky IV went back in timeline (or from the other side, since they wanted the theme/justify Legacy to have both II and IV, they felt they had to add AoEI as well :d), or they just wanted AoEI "showmatch" just because (anniversary and such), or they added AoEI as an afterthought as a reaction to public perception between II and IV to dilute it as that might have been the original plan (because otherwise just those two would make sense, and that would be the most sensible approach - success on II and wanted to catch IV as well as the new "hype" (well...) game), or combined, as it all could fit, take your pick really.

Based on AoEI's limited/localised popularity I find it dubious it would be just like that without motivation in comparison to III which has much more sensible branding value, so since adding III would only improve their general perception, there has to be something overriding it, or simply the event not being planned as "across the franchise" to begin with.

Well, gl&hf everyone.

The reason No AoE3 is because visually aoe3 and 4 look too similar.

The absolute lack of progress between these two bgames will become too apparent.

It's a shame they will be "forced" to play on DE (but I can understand that MS wants to show the new products), and that the event doesn't allow for any kind of DE community to grow, I would guess there would be some non-vietnamese players who would try their best at qualifying if it was possible, though not sure how realistic that is with aoe1 not getting much updates...

They have previously played DE tournaments. There was Microsoft sponsored one in 2019(?) and some others but obviously most have been non-DE

Does anyone have good perspective on how much of an effect switching games in a tournament has on high level players? I really like the idea of an event that brings together the different games in the franchise, but should we expect this to impact the performance of people who are trying to compete in 2 games, and if so how significantly?

Given that the top top level of each game usually comes down to 1 or 2 games in the final few sets, being at 95% instead of 100% would likely mean a top 16 instead of top 4 performance.
I know Viper has mentioned on stream how hard it is switching between games just from a mechanics stand point

Yeah the games are different enough for it to matter and mess up your muscle memory and "feel," and from the other side they are similar in some ways enough to make you make wrong decisions from the other game on automatism - it shouldn't be viable to be very top in both when you have specialists in each (and this is going to be holding according to the level of player you are - so Viper, even if not top AoEIV or II focus will still beat many in the other game regardless). You can see that on the struggles (or different level of success) of the many players trying to play both to different degree (however we do have only one-sided equation basically, because we're talking just AoEII guys into AoEIV, so logically they don't have to necessarily tryhard as much in AoEII and still have decent success due to their experience, yet AoEIV specialists are just on different level of preparation on that game - but it does open the opportunity for the otherwise bit sub-top AoEII players to be rewarded for their AoEII tryharding, as it will level the field with the spread-out players trying both - it's a balancing act, I don't envy the players their decision on what to focus, the money is tempting either side, they should be careful not to screw their chances in one game with promise from the other).

Huge thanks to Red Bull and Microsoft for making this happen! This is (by far) the biggest Aoe2 tournament in history and I am very much looking forward to it.

While I don’t watch any Aoe4, I am happy for the Aoe4 enjoyers to have their own event.

Just would kindly ask the organizers to make it easy to watch only the preferred game. Separate twitch channels would be great. Just please make it easy for us aoe2 people to avoid any exposure to Aoe4. That would be much appreciated

As an AOE 2 fan (who has not been following the AOE 4 ladder lately), I understand:
1) Currently, there are only two AOE 2 players who excel at both Age II and IV
2) It is not realistic to compete in more than one age edition at the same time (because you can't train on world class level for e.g. Age II and IV at the same time)
3) 300K > 200K USD

My question is: In which discipline will Viper and Hera take part?

1) It's more than Viper and Hera. Running and Kasva are top 16, and Daut/Tatoh are top 25-ish
2) Probably. Although I think there is a chance Viper competes in both even if he trains harder for one or the other
3) 1? That's how numbers work
4) Hera said he will compete in AoE2, Viper is likely to qualify for both through tournament performances

No - I assume:
1) its one discipline at best you can master at a specific moment (you cannot be top 1-5 in age 2 and 4 at the same time while others focus on age 2 or 4 only)
2) only ranks 1-4 are worth training for (this might depend on other opportunities, the country you are living in and the current USD exchange rate...)
3) Running, Kasva are unlikely to make it top 1-4 in either discipline, daut and tatoh do have potential to make top 4 in age 2 (but not in age 4)

Again (and focussing on what I really care for): Which game will Viper go for ( I love Hera and I'm so happy he is back)?

1) How can you say you can't be top 1-5 in both games when Viper won an S-tier tourney in both AoE2 and AoE4 within 2 weeks of eachother?

It just aint realistic.

If the top age 2 players focus on age 2 only and the top age 4 players focus on age 4 only and viper focusses on both games at the same time he will not succeed in winning at least one of both disciplines (at which he will have a real shot at if he focusses on e.g. age 2).
