Red Bull Wololo: Legacy - Official Announcement

Announcement​

Are you ready for the most outstanding and prodigious event in the history of Age of Empires? We have teased you enough and are now ready to reveal what we have been brewing behind the scenes. Red Bull Wololo started back in early 2020 and pioneered the use of Empire Wars in major tournaments. The fast-paced, action-packed game mode quickly took off, and we had so many incredible moments spanning through the initial Red Bull Wololo all the way to Red Bull Wololo V in late 2021. As time went on, the events only got bigger and better, and here we are, in 2022, and we are about to blow you away.
To celebrate the twenty-fifth anniversary of Age of Empires, we are announcing not one, not two, but three tournaments. You will get to experience the original game that started the entire franchise back in 1997 - the original Age of Empires. You will also get to experience the arguably most influential game in the franchise's history, Age of Empires II - originally released back in 1999. Finally, the newest edition in the franchise, the incredible Age of Empires IV.

Once again, we will go back to Castle Heidelberg in Germany for the offline event spanning from the 21st to the 30th of October. During these days, you will experience the main event of both Age of Empires II and IV as well as the finals of all three events during the last two days - the 29th and 30th of October.

But what exactly is at stake here? Well, we have a total prize of a whopping $550,000.00 distributed among the three games, as shown below.

• Age of Empires I: $50,000.00
• Age of Empires II: $200,000.00
• Age of Empires IV: $300,000.00

Invitations & Qualification​

Age of Empires II​

For Age of Empires II, you will see the return of all the previous conquerors. Mr_Yo, the champion of the original Red Bull Wololo. Liereyy, the only champion with two victories under his belt, Red Bull Wololo II and IV. DauT, the champion of Red Bull Wololo III. And finally, TheViper, the champion of Red Bull Wololo V. These players have proven themselves to be fierce warriors and have earned a direct invitation to the main event.

Other players must prove themselves worthy in different events leading up to the main event, as well as the two open qualifiers taking place from the 20th to the 21st of August and the 27th to the 28th of August.

Age of Empires IV​

For Age of Empires IV, we're looking back to N4C to find our champions, and with that, Beastyqt, the winner of N4C, and Leenock, the runner-up, will already be waiting to meet everyone else that qualifies in Castle Heidelberg.

Other players must prove themselves worthy in tournaments leading up to the main event, as well as an extensive qualification event, Road to Red Bull held by EGC.

I sincerely hope we can make this one of the greatest events ever. I'm aware of the commotion there has been following the release of Age of Empires IV, but remember that we are celebrating the franchise as a whole and the incredible history our beloved games have. We can't wait to share even more details with you soon.

The way this tournament is being handled is really turning into a joke. I mean, there's no doubt that Red Bull couldn't care less about AOE and that this is just business for them, but MBL vs Hera in a B-stream? Do they even realize that the same match was the biggest upset of the previous edition? Also, we're talking about two players with a lot of following on Twitch, so it's even a waste viewership-wise. If it's not a joke, then I don't know what to think to be honest.

 

They keep hyping up the amazing Hera MBL set from RBW5 and then put their quarter final on the B stream? Shame!

The 2 time champ vs the reigning champ and GOAT is objectively surely the better choice.

The entire point is you shouldn't have to choose. There is no valid excuse in my mind.

 

I know putting Hera vs MbL on stream B was not ideal. But considering the quality of this set vs the Viper-Liereyy set, it would have been even more awful had the Viper-Liereyy set been on Stream B.

 

Especially with the way it unfolded now...

 

Well honestly both sets were quite meh. First 2 sets were way better in my opinion. Villese was winning pretty much every game against Yo, lost with mayans vs hindustanis due couldnt counter ghulams, but seemed better in all games, but still was intrigue, a lot of fighting, amazing game in acclivity, tons of fighting in atacama, really enjoyed the set. Viper vs Liereyy was super weird, many short games or 1 big fight as in acclivity game.

 

The only thing lacking on stream B was cameras. The casting was done by the A team and was in Redbull's own stream.
Sure we don't want overlap but I think if you want to avoid that, you might have to make the time limit even shorter (like in the first red bull) and nobody liked that.

Yes, this one game was on their secondary channel, but before channel B was Nili's channel, which made things even more confusing, as at first it didnt even stream, so people were watching Ornlu channel to begin with. Idk, I just feel there is too much weird stuff knowing how much money there is on the line and how good quality there was last time. We had short videos and a lot of stuff last time, this time we have only some interviews, at least so far, although just 1 day left. Also feels super weird now waiting whole week for 3 sets.

Yes they should have done that to start with. To be honest, I have never seen a smooth LAN in AOE2. And perhaps that's the charm because some games can last 10 minutes and some can last hours. Maybe the years have made us forget some of the problems with some of them but there certainly have been problems in each one of them. If you were only viewing the A stream, this was the smoothest AoE2 LAN, I have seen (so far).

 

And then Nili decided to spoil during the Viper-Lierrey game. Why would you say it's 1-0 for Hera? I bet a lot of people wanted to just watch a VOD of the B stream after Viper-Lierrey

The score was displayed on screen, it's not like he announced for the sake of it.

 

The decision to not have everything on the main stream today seems strange to me especially considering the fact that the next saturday, the day is arguably even longer - 2xSemis BO5, Final BO7 and plus another final from different game which needs some introduction etc... Wonder how they want to manage this final day from time perspective, since I obviously cannot imagine running B stream there

They probably had time constraint just today which prevented them going for later. 4th Set ended 1 hour before 4th set even started last year

 

Also the seeding was weird MBL won the direct match vs jordan so he has to be 3th in the group instead of 4th which should have resulted in him playing tatoh.
In my understanding and how its done in other sports 1th vs 4th -- 2th vs 3th.

Guys we dont have to throw bad words at the production for putting us inthe b stream. The organisation here is amazing and its extremely difficult for them with everything going on.

I understand the hype for me and heras set was ruined and ofc its a let down for us as players, but we also have understanding that this had to be done for us to finish in time. If anything we could just use this experience as a learning for next event.

If you guys were here and saw the crew, their dedication, hard work etc you would not have been on this forum being all this negative.
Negativity towards a huge event like this wont help future events either. Instead, spread positivity, bring more people to watch so we can have an amazing future for aoe instead!

Do we know what is the time limit to finish the event? if it's really around 11 pm - midnight they should anticipate the start at least 2 hours to be sure, even if you will lose a lot of american viewers by doing it

 

Yeah the B-stream seems like a necessary evil, they have finite time and resources so it's the best option. It's like I would prefer the CL to schedule midweek games so I can watch all of the good ones but realistically they can't, so they start (mostly) at the same time.

Really impressed with the production quality this time, they've found another level compared to the last ones (which were also really good). Love the little UU animations.

I've got to say, I don't think this is unfair criticism by any means. I've seen plenty of praise for all the parts of the tournament that have gone well, and also fairly tame feedback for the one part that hasn't. I don't think anybody thinks that the production crew did this with any negative intent, but in the end these are decisions being made by someone on the organizer's side that are definitely negatively affecting the viewer experience. Their decision to cram multiple games into the timeframe of one tournament. Their decision to 'make up' for this with a B stream. Their decision to not plan ahead for whatever time constraint was run into today and put a very hyped series on a second, prior unknown B stream and spoil the in progress results on the main stream.

Again, none of this is to say the poor decisions of a few take anything away from the amazing work done by so many. Or that the viewer experience is not as a whole still very enjoyable. But the viewer experience could definitely have been better so far, and especially when we have RBW5 to compare things to, there are definitely valid reasons to be disappointed that the most prestigious, highest prizepool event we have seen feels a bit mishandled / poorly designed.
