Red Bull Wololo is back, with another edition of the action packed Empire Wars tournament. Our eight quarter finalists from the first Red Bull Wololo are invited directly to the main event, and there will once again be two open qualifiers to decide the other eight competitors.

The eight returning players are Mr_Yo, TheViper, Hera, Liereyy, DauT, MbL, TaToH & LaaaaaN. Will TheViper get revenge on Mr_Yo for his complete domination in the Final or will another player take their chance at the crown?

Qualifier 1 will be played over Friday 07th - Saturday 08th August, and Qualifier 2 will be the following weekend Saturday 15th - Sunday 16th August, beginning at 13GMT each day. Expect to see two intense days filled with hundreds of games being played between the competitiors, fighting for glory & prizes.

Make sure you register for the qualifiers on battlefy here & join the discord to stay up to date with all the latest information & updates.

Featuring an increased prizepool of $30,000 for the main event & prizes for the top 128 players in each qualifier, Red Bull Wololo 2 promises to be bigger and better than ever!

But it can happen, and the mere possibility of it happening due to this fact is a shame.

Ofc people do mention different timezones as well. We dont need to balance one with the other. However, for instance Mr_Yo said himself that he lives mostly to European times anyhow. Not that it totally solve any problem for all Asian players, but still important to know.

Mr yo has said that he considers 2am his time to be when he is most alert. It's equivalent to his midday based on his sleep schedule. So this certainly isn't a valid point.

But in all honesty I agree with you that it's not a big deal having these series back to back. It's what the players sign up for. And it's a one hour break so it's not bad.

Its obviously Not ideal Even tho both semis are played That day so its Not like the First one is having the spa treatment before the Final but its Not an easy task to organise everything with everyone having no disadvantage of Any Kind

Well that is true enough. I'd consider that an unsolvable issue. Both of these things are probably decided ultimately by the sponsor who likely wants the large euro + some USA audience rather than a smattering of Asians, and can you blame them? It's a competition that red bull puts on to draw attention and get sales. Having semis on a different day or even recorded may for them be considered antithetical to the red bull "hard charging" brand. They'll tell the second semifinalist to chug a redbull and get over it

So basically I'm in the camp of those just grateful to RedBull and not too worried about the small things!

I did not see anywhere if there was going to be a balancing for the final day, so not give a disdavantage to the players in the 2nd qualifiers.
Someone cares to let me know ?

yea, theres allways someone favored for one or another reason. this time they have some form of break for the finalists, but more than that is not really reasonable. at one point we just gonna have to accept that players have to make some sacrifices if they want big prizepools, cause they come with high viewercounts and with whatever style the sponsor wants. redbulls brand is more about action/live/fast stuff and not drawn out scheduling etc. obviously they are a business and they will invest their advertisement money (sponsoring) into what they deem most valuable.

What I think could be great is playing both semifinals at the same time, one being cast by T90 and Dave, the other by Nili and ZeroEmpires, and then there is constant switching around between the games whenever there is a highlight, as we know it from other sports. In my opinion that would be really entertaining, fast paced, and full of action

in theory possible and i would find that interesting to try, but i suspect you would have to have some good trial runs / smaller events to test and train this first (expecially for casters this would be a massive change). since redbull is pretty new to the aoe scene i would imagine them rather choosing something more established.

Which could even be worse for Redbull, losing something intermediate between top contestants and those who clearly can't reach the main tourney. One of the reasons to have qualifiers is to get people interested in improving because they feel like they have a chance.
This kind of "you should be glad, other kids don't have such a good life as you!" stops working very quickly, mom.

I was talking about ~1 week earlier, at least to help ppl schedule. Dunno why you're talking about a huge gap like 1-2 months instead and some sort of special prep that needs so much time.
"Not playing during the rest of the time?" How do you think people prepare for tournaments other than playing ranked or in private with friends? Even if you prepare strats, they need to be tested in games, training IS playing.

I agree with you for the most part, if RB really wanna give more people chances, they could have done a lot better, otherwise they should just do a small qualifier/invitations.

However, that's only something RB can improve on execution level, I'm still very thankful to RB for making a great tourney happen.

Let's face it, people like you and me will never get into the top 4. We participate not because we feel like we got a chance to qualify, but a chance to play with the elites. Not to mention the potential logistic problems with RB that force them to schedule the first qualifier on Friday, which is quite weird and skeptical.

if Red Bull Austria totally solve their legal disputes with Red Bull Thailand they will probably sponsor tons of tourney in Asian timezone... Red Bull is actually quite influential across Asia, and has a lot more potential in Japan and China market.

Seems weird that they can’t just announce a tournament 1 month ahead. Why not just have the tournament start in 1 month instead of 1 week? What is the point of doing this? It helps out viewers and players equally. There are no downsides. Strange this is happening from a major organization with lots of tournament experience.

Yeah, this feels like the IOC (International Olympic Committee) just announced that the Olympics would start in 4 days. Please sign up and book your air-tickets now if you want to participate. LOL.

I still remember the days when even a $5k tournament would be announced 1 month earlier, and people were super hype when waiting for the open of signup.

The problem with having one finalist play back to back has an easy solution (use the rec). Only argument against it is that it's not "live" but i personally don't even see whats the huge appeal of that because we don't see the players reactions anyway.

There would be other advantages as well like no waiting for pauses, drops etc. In the first RBW the casters also usually had to speed through the start to catch up, idk if there is a solution for that already but it kinda sucked to miss how players sort their eco (how many on gold) and sometimes even the first wave of units.

For all i care tournaments could use recs for everything tbh, makes everything smoother.

It's honestly absolutely hilarious that they are doing the "short break" between semi final 2 and finals again, it's really mindboggling.

We already had this discussion in Hidden Cup 2, over a year ago, when everyone emphasised that it is an unfair advantage.

We had it again during RBW1, and all the admins acknowledged the problem, especially Nili: he "didn't think it would be such a problem, but will keep it in mind from now on".

And now almost the exactly same thing is happening again. Really boggles the mind.

(I know RB gets to decide in the end, but I'm sure the community hosts/organizers could have a huge influence if they tried)

not sure what u think that break is, but as far as i understand it there is some game or other lengthy event in between so it will be an actual break?!

"The community" has always decided how to do everything according to what makes the most sense from a gameplay perspective, competitively.

The difference is that now it's Red Bull doing it and they won't do what makes most sense from a gameplay or fairness perspective, but what makes most sense in their business plan (as they should).

And that means: Time limit, Empire Wars, semis and finals back to back, etc... With these settings the game has very little to do with aoe2 as we know it.
IMO these settings would be fine if they're used sparingly, but they are devastating (from a gameplay perspective) if we get to the point where they will be used for every tournament.

I want to see the aoe2 I love, and that includes all the depth of dark age , war until the best player wins and a fair playing field for every matchup including the final.

@n0brain I think they said one hour for the break? Which is way better than no break I guess.

To be honest they've improved on both the break and the time limit for this second iteration, at least that's something.

That is not really correct. "The community" that actually decided what to do was allways the very few people who actually ran those tournaments, sometimes based on feedback by the very unrepresentative small part that is active on a few channels of communication like aoezone. Dont forget that the hardcore/competetive scene is not representative at all for viewers, not even for all ladder/online players.

To my knowledge there was never any actually representative full feedback system for anything major and i dont remember any event that for example took potential new viewers in to the equation as a significant part as well. So far i dont see how redbull is any worse in this regard than most other tournaments.

This was not meant really meant as a criticism btw. Its just something extrmely hard to do, with minimal possible gain (since the feedback/interests are split/contradictory on many of the talked about issues) due to having to make compromises anyways. As allways there is room for improvement and as allways there will be happy and unhappy people afterwards. Judging by the massive success of the last one while implementing some feedback and even increasing their investment (more money, more players etc) they seem to be on a as good way as we could reasonably hope for though.
