Red Bull Wololo 2 Announcement

Red Bull Wololo is back, with another edition of the action packed Empire Wars tournament. Our eight quarter finalists from the first Red Bull Wololo are invited directly to the main event, and there will once again be two open qualifiers to decide the other eight competitors.

The eight returning players are Mr_Yo, TheViper, Hera, Liereyy, DauT, MbL, TaToH & LaaaaaN. Will TheViper get revenge on Mr_Yo for his complete domination in the Final or will another player take their chance at the crown?

Qualifier 1 will be played over Friday 07th - Saturday 08th August, and Qualifier 2 will be the following weekend Saturday 15th - Sunday 16th August, beginning at 13GMT each day. Expect to see two intense days filled with hundreds of games being played between the competitiors, fighting for glory & prizes.

well, probably some qualifier people might know it because of being informed from invited players. Also don't forget community did request organisers for qualifiers so new players could have a chance, they could have just invited 16 players and go ahead, with more prep time...

Which could even be worse for Redbull, losing something intermediate between top contestants and those who clearly can't reach the main tourney. One of the reasons to have qualifiers is to get people interested in improving because they feel like they have a chance.
This kind of "you should be glad, other kids don't have such a good life as you!" stops working very quickly, mom.

and well, people should be gaming, its a game still, not like preparing for every tournament around and not playing during the rest of the time, fast-adapting is a skill too.

Personally I don't think training can overcome the difference in skills, maybe we see one or two surprises, but not likely too many.

Plus... if each tournament waits like 1-2 months.... they'll overlap! or either queue like for 1 year, which is great for everyone I guess (the fact that we have this problem, with so many big tourneys).

I was talking about ~1 week earlier, at least to help ppl schedule. Dunno why you're talking about a huge gap like 1-2 months instead and some sort of special prep that needs so much time.
"Not playing during the rest of the time?" How do you think people prepare for tournaments other than playing ranked or in private with friends? Even if you prepare strats, they need to be tested in games, training IS playing.

The time limit is a bit of a turn-off as well, since in the last edition, there were some games, albeit few, which ended up in camp-fests and waiting till the time runs out. While I understand that the tournament is time-constrained, I would have liked another work-around on this, maybe something like hiding the score, if that is possible.

Hiding the score would make it more random in games that actually end on score and more campy since the player that's behind doesn't know he needs to push. Rather, I'd increase the time limit a bit so it really only affects games that go into these protracted trash wars over the last few woodlines. It's already close to that since the games are much faster in Empire Wars.
Still, I don't think this is a big deal precisely because so few games reached that point and the maps are quite open and encourage aggression.

They may not have it planned already but definitely teasing the possibility.

On a quick glance, those look like the in-game icons for Castle and Imperial Age to me. Just before that you see the Feudal Age icon too with the prominent II.

EW should stand for Elite Warrior setting. It's a warrior's mode where you have to actually fight.

Don't get me wrong I have an appreciation for all these things in 1v1 arabia:

• quick walling to prevent fighting
• arena-ing of bases to prevent fighting
• full tryhard micro-nerding to prevent fighting

Which is why I like EW, it forces the fight, gets the adrenaline going. It's a warrior's mode, not a coward's mode.

But sadly speaking, it seems more like Red Bull Wololo 1.25 not RBW2, because essentially the settings are the same, but just some numbers were increased by 25%. Prizepool +25% ($23k -> $30), Time limit +25%(60 min -> 75 min), Break between seminfinal and final +25% (from somewhat 45 minutes to a guarenteed hour according to robo). And that is a bit underwhelming after the huge justified feedback there was after the first installment regarding problems that really hurt the enjoyment and the competitive spirit of the tournament.

Well. Compared with other esports tournaments, the AOE prize pool is too small. Very glad to see Red Bull did it again with big prize pool 30000$. So excited. Attracting more and more young guns playing aoe and even trigger Microsoft sponsor 100k tournament back to 2001. TheViper will be champion because pize pool size can change everything.

Did they have a widespread of justified criticism of players ? No, in fact they always listened to them, trying to make it the best possible. And yes, we had huge changes between NAC2 and 3, KOTD2 and 3 and HC2 and 3, just look at the change from SE to GSL groups for KOTD3, a total different thing. I did not demand to remove Empire Wars to justify it to be given another name, but usually the first part, as pilot gets a lot of overhaul after feedback, because in the first instance there is so much to learn and adapt. So why not compare HC1 and HC2, NAC1 and 2, etc

And I just said, it seems like it, because instead of another solution in its core, just the numbers are increased with the hope that it will be enough now. It is ofc better than before, because a lot games seemed to just needed 10 minutes more in RBW1, but the games will not fare independently of the time limit. Players will adapt their gamestyle again, as Hera admitted after the MbL Kawasan game. In this particular case, he could just sit around 15 minutes longer and see his score rise, because defensive play will always get the higher score gain than the one who tries to overtake score by being agressive. It is the core flaw in the system. And with campier maps this time, I see the time limit being even more important, just because now all the players are aware of using the possibilities to strech for a win. An increased prize pool will motivate players to lame four games in a final if it is allowed no matter what.

It is more about just comparing numbers and seeing, oh they invested more money into it, it must be better. A better prize pool doesnt provide a better tournament, doesnt provide better games. We as community also have interest in seeing the tournament being the best opportunity for its entirety and not only a few. And even from a viewership point, the problems we had last time hurt the enjoyment of people a lot. We can now just say: "Well, at least you watched it, but please dont give feedback about it, otherwise I need to ask if you are kidding. Just be happy that Redbull puts some of their pocket money into the game." That is for sure not, how we develop the best possible growth for all of us.

First of all, i believe if it would be exactly same as last time than it would be a massive success allready. Regardless of personal taste etc RBW1 was one of the most liked tournaments of the year with a very nice prizepool. Secondly them improving and growing on the first iteration while listening to feedback makes it strictly better than the first one (unless someone wants to argue its somehow worse now?). Not every tournament is for everyones taste (arena vs classic 1v1 vs TGs vs DM etc), but this format definitely seems to be fun for many (see the quite crazy viewer numbers etc). Argueably much more fun than many other events of the year judging by the metrics and feedback.

 

Having to play semifinal and final on the day with just 1 hour break is very demanding for anyone.

I hope both semifinal happen at the same time, so that the second semifinal won't be casted live and both players have more or less the same time to analyze the opponents match and to have a break.

Since everyone is hoping for something... here's mine:
I hope the decisive game in the final is decided by score. For 20+ years we've been so wrong, we thought having a stronger economy or (god forbid) actually beating your opponent to death is what showed true skill. We even thought that throughout history that's how empires were formed and how empires disappeared.
Luckily Red Bull came and showed us that scoring random points for doing random things is the true measure of skill.

Providentially Red Bull came and showed us that we've done everything wrong, that our game growing like crazy for the last few years was just an illusion. Greatly successful tournaments with even bigger prize pools were hallucinated too, for we all know you can't do a tournament without time limit.

Also they didn't come to this game when it was bigger than ever, they didn't come when it made financial sense for them, they didn't come because of business... no brothers! They came to show us the only true way, the score way!

It was hard keeping a straight face writing this lol. Don't mistake it for hate, it just needed to be done I only wish this tournament to be a great success again and I'll certainly watch as much as I can. The time limit though, is simply ridiculous. Their money their choice. However I will always take a time limit as a direct aggression to aoe2. Don't expect me to drop the soap in the shower, bend over and take it silently. No man, I'll get your time-limited soap, put it inside a time-limited sock and beat you with it before it dissolves into nothingness.

This seems like a win win solution. Cast 1 semi live and the other one recorded games. This gives enough downtime to both the participants.

Where also the second semifinalist almost lost because of his clear disadvantage. It is and remains an unfair advantage and just because the best player in the world there could overcome his advantage doesnt mean it is ok to have it that way. They dont start from the same line into the series.

 

OFC its an advantage but u were Givin for certain That the only thing we can expect is a sweep, beside u are only considering this factor and if we wanna Look every aspect we have Chinese Players starting Series at 2 am because its the best streaming time for eu or usa but hey Nobody complains about that
