Red Bull Wololo 2 Announcement

Red Bull Wololo is back, with another edition of the action packed Empire Wars tournament. Our eight quarter finalists from the first Red Bull Wololo are invited directly to the main event, and there will once again be two open qualifiers to decide the other eight competitors.

The eight returning players are Mr_Yo, TheViper, Hera, Liereyy, DauT, MbL, TaToH & LaaaaaN. Will TheViper get revenge on Mr_Yo for his complete domination in the Final or will another player take their chance at the crown?

Qualifier 1 will be played over Friday 07th - Saturday 08th August, and Qualifier 2 will be the following weekend Saturday 15th - Sunday 16th August, beginning at 13GMT each day. Expect to see two intense days filled with hundreds of games being played between the competitiors, fighting for glory & prizes.

Maybe this is a point where announcing the announcement helps.

E.g. RedBull announces they will host an Empire Wars (basic setting) tournament with (a large prize pool) in 1 or 2 months (basic time frame) time. Top x players will be invited to main stage and rest can sign up to open qualifier.

Sign ups close the night before at 22gmt (Thursday 06th & Friday 14th), seeding will be based on highest rating at the end of sign ups

So it sounds like what ppl have a problem with isn't that the invited players got more preparation/scheduling, rather that the quals players don't get any. If this announcement was a week ago it could've been much better for many people.

well, probably some qualifier people might know it because of being informed from invited players. Also don't forget community did request organisers for qualifiers so new players could have a chance, they could have just invited 16 players and go ahead, with more prep time...

apart from that, the tournament is quite fine, most first-qualifier people will be on the same level.

and well, people should be gaming, its a game still, not like preparing for every tournament around and not playing during the rest of the time, fast-adapting is a skill too.

Personally I don't think training can overcome the difference in skills, maybe we see one or two surprises, but not likely too many.

Plus... if each tournament waits like 1-2 months.... they'll overlap! or either queue like for 1 year, which is great for everyone I guess (the fact that we have this problem, with so many big tourneys).

So are games still decided based on score after the time limit? And is the score visible to the players during the game? At least the time limit was increased, so it should be a lot more infrequent, but there were some genuinely terrible games in the last RB tournament cuz of this rule.

 

Wow. 30000US is really big. Red Bull is a really AOE Empire War fan. Will this time final to be in house LAN 1 vs 1? Remember last time, supposed to be in Belgium.

While I am quite hyped about the tournament and the fact that the game has attracted a commercial sponsor to invest in it for a second time, I'm very disappointed about certain things, especially those which should have been changed after considering feedback after the first edition.

Some players knew that this was coming beforehand and thus had time to clear out their schedules and potentially mentally prepare for the tournament. Many have touched upon this point, so I will not go too much into it. However, if its not possible to announce the tournament more in advance (which would be ideal) due to logistical reasons, at least the potential contenders for the main event spot (say, the top ~30-40 people on the ladder, or at least the main eventers in the first edition) should have been notified that there is an empire wars tournament coming in August.

Secondly, another thing that I really, really dislike is the fact that semifinals and finals are being played back to back on the same day again. While I am not one to speak on this, many expert players (especially Viper) have time and again stated that tournament games are very draining, and it is unfair to have to play two series consecutively with a small break in between, while the other player has a substantial break. This has been brought into limelight not once, but twice in the past and I fail to understand why this has not been changed.

The time limit is a bit of a turn-off as well, since in the last edition, there were some games, albeit few, which ended up in camp-fests and waiting till the time runs out. While I understand that the tournament is time-constrained, I would have liked another work-around on this, maybe something like hiding the score, if that is possible.

I would also like to point out a few positives as well, such as regional language streaming being allowed for non-English speakers and increased qualifier spots.

Anyway, I hope that the event is a great success and inspires more commercial sponsors to invest in the game in the future!

I am really happy that Redbull will give AoE continuing support. It is a great opportunity for the community to use the attention and the money put into it, to take a lot of growth out of it. Especially with professional teams working on production design, we all can see how AoE can look like. But sadly speaking, it seems more like Red Bull Wololo 1.25 not RBW2, because essentially the settings are the same, but just some numbers were increased by 25%. Prizepool +25% ($23k -> $30), Time limit +25%(60 min -> 75 min), Break between seminfinal and final +25% (from somewhat 45 minutes to a guarenteed hour according to robo). And that is a bit underwhelming after the huge justified feedback there was after the first installment regarding problems that really hurt the enjoyment and the competitive spirit of the tournament. But of course we dont need to be naive and know this is primarily a big ad show and we are heavily dependent on the sponsor what to do with his money as we had it with MSC. Let us see, how it will work out with the little tweeks compared to the last time. I am eager to give my feedback, as you know.

I just hope that the seeding for the main event will not just be random again. With the invite of the half of the participating players, its really hard for outsiders not having had the luck to be in the luxury seats there from the beginning to make it in there themselves, just because of general disadvantages they have compared to invited players. I wish there is at least a seeding now to determine who will face Viper and who will face the weaker players of the invited roster. So that the first round is more balanced and we dont have a TheMax - TaToH going into a really close matchup while we also have weaker players facing each other in the first round, against which a top8 player like Max should have a better chance to make it into the juicy quarterfinal rounds.

But in general for me the invite policy is no good and enforces bad structures inside the community, but yeah we were there 4 months ago as well.

Rly awesome, loved the mass-qualifier and the EW Settings, also great in general that Red Bull is willing to sponsor another edition and even increases the Prizepool by a lot (also small prices for top 128 Pog).

These are the big chances, we will talk about in a year for sure. I am happy for all the small players that they have something to talk about and showoff, but for the top 50 players I think being able to compete as much as they wish they could is more important than getting a hoodie gifted for at least trying.

I dont only care about them, but I care about them. You can have those gifts for players of the qualifiers and a proper treatment of all, that want more than just trying out the qualifiers for fun. I dont see why I should not say, I dont like things, just because RB puts some stuff on the table.They could give every viewer a cookie, but that doesnt make it a per se better tournament. For the community I think it doesn't even matter that prizepool 20k or 30k. Who cares that Vipet get +2k.
But the prizes for mid players and 512 qualifiers - I see here that they want aoe to grow up. And that AOE will become game not only for top20 and others viewers watching them over and over again, but also for the others players.

If there are money-prizes for the qualfiier finalists or the players reaching the tournament via the qualifier that the invited players wont get, then I would agree. But only buffing the top8 and the 100- players is no consitent growth on all levels. As I said before, I value the possibilities of attention Redbull gives, and count those little prizes as a good idea but its not everything.
