RAGE FOREST 3​

It's FINALLY here! We are extremely excited to announce the third edition of the highly anticipated Rage Forest tournament, a Black Forest team game tournament, featuring 16 Team Captains who draft from over 200 players in a unique draft system, all competing for a $10,000 prize pool!

Rage Forest 3 will take place over the entire month of April 2022 featuring single elimination best of 5 4v4 team games on the best team game map ever – Black Forest!

There will be 16 teams, each comprising of 6 players: 1 Tier 1 Captain, 1 Tier 2 player, and 2 players from Tiers 3 and 4. Every match will be played with at least one tier 4 player in the squad.

The total prize pool for this tournament is $10,000 which will be divided as follows:​

Hera hasn't signed up though he said he would play in major AoE2 tournaments, so make of that what you will.

To be fair Hera says a lot of things

 

Currently, there aren't even 160 sign-ups, so I don't see how 160/200 can be playing. Not even considering a decent portion of sign-ups are <2k players who are not in the top 200.

To add to this, out of the 142 players who are ranked on the ATP 1v1 Rankings, 98 have not signed up at this time. This means that only 44 have signed up, which is a whopping 31%.

Just to be clear: the draft system is used because we want to increase the competitiveness, not decrease it. Any other big TG tournament with preset teams has clear favorites from the start and there are only 2-4 teams that have any realistic chances of winning it. Usually you can predict the finals before any games are played. That is in my opinion not very competitive as 90% of players are not playing for a podium finish. It would certainly benefit myself and other Amigos to have our Amigo A team and battle it out with GL and potentially aM or Suomi while everything up to that point is just a formality. I assume that would then be your typical S-tier prestigious tournament where nobody in the grand finals has <2k3 1v1 elo and casual viewers tuning in to the finals can recognize their favorite streamers.

Instead we’ll again have 96 players who all have a chance to end up on one of the best teams, who can all (if motivated) try to improve their standings in the tiers in these weeks before draft day by playing BF on our Discord with/against the future captains. No captain can cruise through first rounds because he can’t rely on his teammates being 500+ elo more skilled than the opponents.

Top 200 players in the world by ATP or whatever rankings are certainly not top 200 players in the world on BF just like they’re also not top 200 players in the world in Death Match so I wonder why DMers had their S-Tier 10k (exactly the same prize pool) tournament last year with way fewer “big names” signing up. I also wonder which tier RF would belong to it if was played on a non-closed map with exactly the same players and settings. Not that it’s really important in the end ...

 

I'm glad the world of AoE has finally embraced the draft system.

Viper did it for a showmatch once and I really liked it.

 

Most likely @robo and his boys club don’t like BF so no S-tier

I think that part makes sense since the big difference is RF is a TG Tournament, so each Player is actually competing for way less money.

 

Can regional tournaments never be S-tier then?

It would not. At most, it can be A-Tier if its for a whole region (EU, LATAM, NA, Asia, etc) or B-Tier if its limited to a single (or a small set) of countries, France, Spain, Benelux (Belgium, Netherlands, Luxemburg), etc.

You have to remember the wiki only started in mid-2020, and we mostly grabbed things from AoEZone and other archives to fill out each series' info. We had a sheet with all the events we knew and we sorted them into tiers just based on the eye test.

From Oc 2021 to Feb 2022 we got together and worked out the current guidelines, prize pool, region locking, and all. So you can figure most pre-2021 events have their tiers based on old guidelines and are pretty much grand-fathered in at this point.

It feels like a more objective way of ranking tournaments would be to have a *minimum* prize pool to qualify for each tier, and then your extra addendum that can bump a tournament up a tier, but not bump it down.
Otherwise the admins of liquipedia can just decide that a $10k, $20k, $50k tournament isn't "S-tier" because they don't like it.

if it were $50k, it would be an automatic S-Tier imho

My opinion. That does not mean that every other editor sees it the same way.

That's not how I think the process works, but I do think that the average twitch viewer/liquipedia enjoyer/community member largely thinks of tournament "tiers" being a direct function of prizepool

Generally? Yes. But thats my own opinion as well. But if you did a poll I would think most people would agree that any $50k tournament would qualify as S-tier

"Who can make the prettiest/most interesting town in editor" tournament (something like that does exist)? AI wars? Don't envy the team deciding tiers when subjectivity is part of it, can never satisfy everyone.

Yeah I think this is my point. The admins (who are generically doing a great job with Liquipedia and doing it all as volunteers AFAIK) just invite a ton of questions and concerns about objectivity if they "downgrade" a tournament due to subjective factors.

Now that the roaster is out.

Pretty safe to say majority of the top 20/30 players signed up.
Several promising names in "tier 2" as well

But I suppose liquipedia can do liquipedia things.......

Anyway, it probably would've been S tier if it was 20K. Such a shame that it isn't, RF deserves more.

 

There's an error in the roster section, somebody put Roggy in the tier4 instead of tier1.
