Hey boomers and sim city lovers! We have just the tournament for you! Come showcase your pure boom to 200 villagers, using standard resources on an open arena map. Winner take all - $200

Borne from an academic curiosity to find out the best booming civ to produce a pure 200 villager boom, we decided to open this contest to any AOE II player, with a minimum of 100 games played, and no ELO minimum

This challenge is part of the Age of Challenges series, which aim to dive deeper into the game and highlight nuances of specific gameplay through a series of challenges using a tournament format

RULES​

• Map: Custom Arena made by @c3mbre
• Visibility: All visible
• Team: All random team
• Civilization: Free pick any civ (except China/Incas), hidden civ
• Banned civs: Chinese, Incas
• No pauses allowed
• No laming of any resources
• No attempts to sabotage other players

Administrators will review each replay to calculate the winners of each round. The first players to reach 200 villagers will advance to the next round

TOURNAMENT STRUCTURE​

Depending on the number of sign ups, we will have a 32 player or 64 player bracket. The top 16 players will be placed in the corners of the bracket so as to not face each other in the first round

32 players:
Round 1 - 4 games x 8 players (top 2 players from each game advance)
Final - 8 players (winner takes all)

64 players:
Round 1 - 8 games x 8 players (top 2 players from each game advance)
Round 2 - 2 games x 16 players (top 4 players from both games advance)
Final - 8 players (winner takes all)

TIMELINE​

Wednesday, Nov 3 - Sign ups open
Monday, Nov 8 - Sign ups close @ midnight GMT
Tuesday, Nov 9 - Tournament starts at 18 GMT. Each round is 45 minutes. Final will be held at 19:30 GMT

Interesting idea, but why do you need a tournament for that? You could just ask for recorded games and give the prize money to the best time achieved, I think it would attract more players and create more competition.

I prefer a live multiplayer experience so I can cast the series and it's a one time deal, versus someone grinding it out alone

Previous record was like 27:XX something but with aoc balance in MP.

SP attempts are like 24:XX in low speed.

With newer civs like burgundians,indians, khmer even sicilians, could potentially break the vikings record.

People keep saying that ist 24:xx in single player but is there an actual prove of that?

Don't know if this played a role, but can't you hide the fact you paused the game in single player? And queue a few tasks while paused?

I guess making it online also ensures everybody is playing under the same conditions.

I remember CometNet organizing such a challenge like 10 years ago lol
Back then we had a Michi-like custom scenario which by the way I think would be fairer cause you could then ensure equal distance to resources for all players.

But this still sounds really fun though!

I imagine the tatar straight 4-5tc fc will be pretty good. This sorta is interesting, might try it 11.

e: How about market usage, is it disallowed completely? Many builds rely on marketing such as selling wood or such, which in an FFA game could be “build sabotage”. Same for buying food with gold, faster buys get a free advantage. It’s not the same playing field then for all.

Can we do a 300 pop, vil + military (in any ratio) race?! 200 vil is a bit monotonic imo.

3- Build 5-10 barracks and spam spearman non stop till you reach 300 pop

After a point, resources shouldn't be a problem so faster TCs should be more beneficial. Cumans and Malay could also be interesting. But what do I know!

If players want to risk incorporating or relying on the market in a multiplayer setting, then they can do so at their own risk. I am not banning the use of the market, although we did discuss this topic at great length

It's still unclear which civ is the best for it. I suggest trying it out yourself and seeing if you can get competitive timings! Anything in the 26:xx range should be extremely strong

Due to CaptureAge, it'll be played as 4v4 instead of FFA, so team bonuses can cause not fair results (even if Incan bonus is hardly an advantage).
