Yeah don't think I've really seen a good argument against this one. Having to change the matchmaking algorithm is not an acceptable excuse for a professional game development studio.

So, you want balanced matches and an opt-in system. Let's do some math. 9.5k people playing right now. I will use SOLT's vidoe as reference:

This is a graph of % of players in each game mode. So, ~3300 in ranked TGs. But these are the players currently playing, not queuing. Let's assume 1000 players (generous?) in queue for TGs. They are further divided by 2v2, 3v3, 4v4. Now on top of this you want to separate by maps? These further get divided by elo. So, finding games even in the most popular map might be problematic now.


Maybe the devs aren't be fascist (in this case) just pragmatic. It would be good if devs release more stats and communicate, but that's just wishful thinking. Let's see if we get a roadmap with the upcoming patch.

Probably also a good way to introduce people to new maps. For example if they enjoyed playing the hybrid map in the last rotation, they’ll be more willing to give the next one a go even if it’s a new map to them.

We used to get games at voobly with just a fraction of those numbers, even in HD with less players than voobly you could find games, you gotta stop believing that finding games would be impossible 1111

There are 60k players active per month in the tg ladder playing ranked distributed in different days and time zones, those are healthy numbers, the numbers only go down while europeans are sleeping, the problem is that you and others have got used to get crappy games within 7 mins, you are addicted to low quality games, current MM needs to increase the waiting times for higher ranks, remove ban system and just queue for the map or maps you are willing to play or simply open ranked lobbies and let the players do their things instead of trying to control the environment, cause clearly that is just causing more issues, DE has been losing players instead of increasing them and that is due the lack of fixing the MM for team games, even in 1x1 i have friends that stopped playing 1x1 cause they weren't willing to play in their reduced free time the preferred map of someone else, you must be a kid, but must aoe users are over 30 years old, we don't have the time to play socotra or nomad just to please others that happen to be a minority.

Low playerbase isn't doing it for me either. Opt-in system does not fully separate by map because players can select multiple maps and have the option to compromise on their map preferences for queue time if they desire.

It's not only a problem of what the people want to play. It's also a civ picker problem.
I.e: Guy who picks runestones over arabia tends to also pick civ like mayans (runestones is walleable) and mayans its one of the best picks.
A guy picks four lakes and you'll face lithuanians...
A guys picks nomad and its going to be spanish.

I'd really love to have infinite bans or map selection for the queue but also a button, a simple button to split the queue between civ pickers and random civ players.
Wanna practice some specific build? you have a queue for that. Wanna play an specific map? you have a queue for that.

People who were dodging still do that anyway, they just have to wait 5 minutes. Hence I'd rather requeue immediately after someone dodges on the map screen than play for 5 minutes just to see someone resign and go to a new queue anyway.

The current solution is just dumb, especially for team games, as no one gives a **** about their TG elo.
