After spring opened a discussion about how admins could/should work, i want to showcase the other side.
Im doing tournaments for a big variety of skill levels. I organized for example the Brotherhood tournaments which were for 1000-1400 elo and 1800-2100 elo, my last two Imporovement Cup 1v1 tournaments were for 1400-1800 and my current tournaments are for almost every skill level.
What i face regular as an admin is: Teams/players signing up, dont schedule anything for a week, then just drop out of the tournament.
Or Teams are 0:2 down in a match and then just give AW (that is awesome for casters)
(those things also happen with very known players who are 2k+ or even 2k2+)
That players dont read the rules and dont prepare for matches is standard in AoE below the 2k4 level. When the match starts, it happens on a regular base that players need to read the rules and check the maps first for the first 30 mins of there match...
As an organizer+admin u come up with settings, rules, maps, u want players to enjoy your tournament, deliver i nice tournament, with interesting/unique settings and the least u expect from the players is:
When u sign up for a tournament, play the tournament! Show up in time! Read the rules!
For the skillevel most my tournaments are (1600-2200) those things just dont happen. Then u ask yourself, why do tournaments for this skillevel??
I have no financial interest in AoE, i do tournaments because i like to play different settings, play new maps, play a big variety of civs. So a financial aspect doesnt cover the lacklaster behavior of the players. I actually put 100% of the donations into the tournaments.
And there are people who put way more work into aoe tournaments than me. For example: @Huehuecoyotl22
I wonder how his experiences and of other tournament organizers are who are not into money in aoe but doing tournaments because they do it as a hobby because they like aoe, they like to organize tournaments.
When tournaments start u hear often as an organizer: oh great tournament, looking forward to play it. When teams play there matches then u hear often: i dont care about the match, we didnt prepare, lets just play whatever.
When teams drop out of the tournament u hear often: who cares about the tournament, lets go next.
Those kind of attitudes really surprise me everytime again.
When u sign up for a tournament, dont u want to win?
Is a tournament not more enjoyable when u prepare stuff and then improve?
CS was my main game for 15 years and i played a ton of cs tournaments back in the day and maybe it is just different because u play 5v5 and u motivate each other. But even if u put zero prize money, organize a tournament for 20 teams, those 20 teams in cs on any level will prepare and tryhard to win.
In AoE this whatever, i dont care player mentally is so anoying for an admin.
I want to make clear im talking hear not about the tournaments where sponsors are involved and admins get paid. That is a complete different thing.
Looking forward to your thoughts.
