It isn't that straight forward.

They get money to do many things:

Study the other top players games. I don't mean watching one or two, I mean watching them all and keeping running tabs on styles and strengths on weaknesses on everyone but keeping this information internal.

Practicing vehemently internally but only showing the public they play a few games every few months, despite playing more than they played before they became tyrant.

Only practicing with a select group of people to keep their skill levels hidden. Other top experts can do the same but it is difficult seeing as all rated games are automatically recorded and posted.

If someone outside of tyrant is getting good and could possibly become a threat to them in any way, they will buy that player.

This makes tyrant the equivalent of a typical sponsored gaming house and gaming league for AoC. However, in other games, there are typically at least a handful of reputable high skill groups. But in AoC, there is only one.

This makes it so it is like having the backing, time, and practicing partners of the NHL and getting to face off against everyone else who has none of those advantages. On top of it you get enough money so you don't need to work as much and can easily put extra time towards practicing.

In my opinion if you had several such groups in AoC it would be much more competitive, but since we don't, it is just like in other games where players who aren't part of the gaming leagues don't have the opportunity to go as far.

I dont see that like something bad or unethical, it happens in every sport. Just take a look to the spanish football league, Real Madrid and Barcelona have like 10 times the money that an average team has to spend in players/trainers, etc. In tennis a top ten wins million of dollars a year meanwhile a top 100 (not bad) still struggles with money, and cannot think in a life after tennis without working.

Despite that, i dont think that's good for straight competence.

I doubt tyrants do all that Chris, I know L Clan and bsk etc had a similar modus operandi in the past.. Truth be spoken AOC lacks high skilled competition now with all good players in tyrant... my 2 cents is the latest set of guys who were added to tyrant was not as much as threat issue... I think tyrants wanted to organize internal tournaments(like L Clan) for which they needed a bigger roster and hence the last set of guys were added..

As for studying records etc is concerned I have a feeling they just dont bother about it normally.. May be before a tourny kab takes them to the drawing board but not on a daily basis

+1 , its a different league , when you are getting paid for playing aoc.
No doubt the players being paid deserve this, but now its more of an internal rivalry among tyrant, cause all 2k3 2k4 are now Tyrant except Chris. Little chance of outside competition.

And its different from what L clan and Bsk did, that was only for a tournament, this is more like complete sponsorship.
Still makes you wonder who the sponsor is. Must be a huge fan of the game. Maybe if i had $$$$ i do the same

I don't know much about how much actual effort is put in by TyranTs. It could be exactly as Chris says or not at all. When Jordan was in US, he was still part of TyranT. He couldn't practice too much over in US because he didn't have a good connection or some such reason. Anyway, he came back and in no time reached a 23 game streak! I do feel that some of these TyranTs are truly just talented. But, then again, Chris is a AOC legend and probably know what is really going on or maybe what is really needed to retain this level of gameplay.

However, I do want to point out that there is one factually incorrect statement from Chris. SY is a pretty rich sponsor and apparently, as per Helen's statements, SY also gets very generous amount money from him/her. I don't know if SY and TyranTs are equally compensated, but they do get compensated none the less.

My question is: why is it worthy for the sponsor, to give money to a player to play the game at a high level? What does the sponsor get in return? I never really understood that.
