Every aoe has had this since AoE3 (not sure about AoM),

I didn't say they used a (years old) AoE engine, just "engine", 'cos it's the "Essence Engine" made for Company of Heroes (by Relic) for their 2006 release.. And what I hear about it is that it's not great, even though they continue to work with it (considering they release "new" games with it).

One can argue for not missing with arrows in aoe3 (game balance and stuff with mainly gunpowder units), but that's not a medieval game.

In all likelihood it's definitely lot more than just 100k. 100k is just the prize pool, in addition the whole cost of organization of this LAN. Probably another 100k.

There were really good sets past two days and will only get better due to the swiss format. The game balance is on point. Players are armed to the teeth with preparation. Mongols which were the dominant civ going into N4C has really bad win rate in tourney. Perhaps, viewers who play the game simply understand what's going on and hence enjoy the show. Im sure you've tried the game out enough to follow what's going on.

I for one gave it a try, but its just too much "new" stuff.
I didn't try AoE4 too much, because I was put off a lot by the early issues and mostly by the hotkey system to the point that I just didn't see a reason to spend any time on it over AoE2. So now AoE4 for me is just a game I don't understand, with graphics I don't particular enjoy, played mostly by players I don't know, mostly casted by people I don't know.
It might be a good event and nothing wrong with it. Likely the only reason it gets so little viewers is the lack of a community for the game.
Watching slam play AoE4 on ladder would still be more interesting to me, than to watch N4C because at least I know/care about the streamer.

And that is exactly the problem why i (personally) do not enjoy watching AoE4.
I do not play the game and i do not understand what is going on ingame.

When i open an Age2 cast midagem, i can see military numbers, villager numbers, ressources, build tcs's and castles on the minimap within a glance. I immediatly get a feeling of the current state. If i open an Age4 stream, i get neither of this. (Or i am just not recognising it because i dont know the game).

I just dont get entertained watching Age4 either. I rly dunno why. seriously i cant explain it. I tried multiple times but i always feel lost, dont understand most of the gameplay and fights tend to be like "patrol, hope for the best and better comp wins". No real micro, no major army movment which impacts outcome... at least it feels like it... Again: could be that i just need to know more about the game before watching gameplay, but thats a bad design then imo.

In comparison: I dont play WC3. Whenever i watch some WC3 content from time to time, i really get hooked about the gameplay and the play-by-play-casting is enough for me to understand whats going on. ( i gues because the game is way more about micro than overall macro and the macro decisions will be shown in the next micro fights with new units rather sooner than later)

I understood everything that was going on thanks to the excellent commentary of Grubby and Dave; it didn't change how the game looks, or sounds, or feels.

I have tried to involve many of my friends to aoe2 tournaments and they have almost the same complaints as you do for aoe4. As i understand it, rts games especially aoe/sc series takes a lot of game knowledge to follow what's going on on an entry level. Its what it is to follow rts genre.

Worst part of this 225K tournaments, we need to listen AOE4 fanbois next 2 months, while they are trying to sell the game again like a door to door salesman. Now they are encouraged again. **** smells like ****, even if you put in a fancy package with lots of perfume.

It was a peaceful short period last couple of weeks.

I really tried, but whil playing the game is atleast fun with friends (that are not too competiive in RTS) Watching it doesn't bring me any joy.

not so sure about this. I played way less SC2 than i played AOE4, and I am far away from being any good at sc2. But I still enjoy watching it.

IMO they have to retweak WOLOLOs, otherwise there will be so little eye catching moments for outsiders.

I was about to write pretty much the same things (except I don't play it, the beta put me off too much).

I hear all the time that the game improved a lot, and that there are good sets. And maybe I just watch the wrong matches, but to me, it is the exact same game, the exact same feeling as I had 3-4 months ago - watching it, I am just incredibly bored.

Even the excellent production and commentary can't save that, because I always say the same thing: Boring is the last thing a game should be. The most exciting AoE4 match I've seen was maybe a 4/10, at most, and I can't even tell you which one it was anymore (it was duing the first EG tourney), it just left as little of an impact.

By comparison, the most "boring" match I've seen in the DauT - TaToH Bo21 easily ranked a 6/10 for me.

It is a fair argument by the IV fans that people should give N4C a try. But after I did, instead of seeing their point, I feel all the more put off from the game, and won't tune in next week again.

Which is sad, because once again, I wanted it to be good, I wanted to like it, and I try to be constructive with my critique of it, but if this is the game "getting better", I only see all the bad things I thought about it confirmed...

I forced myself and watched the viper series. I couldnt even get into the game cause i did not understood what is happening. And this is why the tournament with this prizepool is premature. Since viper is problably out i dont have anything to watch. I dont know players commentators and gameplay. Sad to see, if nili waited a bit it could be super fun tournament if we could get to know players more.

Tbh many people had the same issues when tournament was announced. Nili was a bit stubborn, but i think he will learn from this mistake, although i wish him all the best for this one (still sad this isint aoe2 tournament)
