All he did was just copy paste taketvs tournament. He had some connections into the aoe2 scene, as did take with wc3 back in the days. So he could invite some pros more as friends, as in competition to his home and build it up from there.
He just used someone elses idea, nothing more. Its not my definition of "hard work."

I have played this game for 20 years.
Never watched a tournament and I have no idea what NAC3 means

well if there is a concern regarding interest, that should be Microsofts concern. it is weather if their consultant or employee (i have no clue what nilis contractual situation with MS is) uses their funding in their interest or not. fascinating how everyone is suddenly a lawyer from MS. and i am sure MS was aware that nili had a role and personal interest in NAC (fun fact: his name is actually in the title). so i am quite confident that they chose him "because" of his engagement with tourneys himself, not "even though" he organizes tournaments.

It has nothing to do with laws or lawyers. The conflict of interest is of a moral nature. Morality is probably the main thing people look at when deciding what is good or bad for a community. Even more so when deciding who to support financially (e.g. subbing/donating on Twitch).

Of course this is all very personal. For some whatever bullshit drama happened 10 years ago is enough to keep hating on a guy forever. For others streaming aoe4 or having a certain accent when speaking English is a sin deserving of hate too 11. Even having a dissenting opinion is enough for many ^^

If for you there's nothing wrong with this case of conflict of interest, then that's okay, they're your morals. I don't think it's a massive deal but enough to be of some concern, specially for a small-ish community like this one.

It casts a strange light on microsoft. Microsoft is actually extremely careful to ensure that everything runs perfectly in terms of compliance. I think there is definitely a conflict of interest. Even though Nili would probably have got the money anyway. It's not too bad, but it could have been avoided. Did I also read correctly that it was to take place at GL headquarters? again: 2 business entities that use their money and effort in their interest is a completely fine and normal thing as long as they pursue their own luck without doing anything illegal or immoral. organizing a tournament to promote urself is not immoral. the entitlement in this forum is unbelievable.

I agree in general, since they know the location etc.. but nowadays, people react very sensitively to compliance issues. It's not about right and wrong. I don't have a problem with the whole thing in general, but there is a potential for it to reflect negatively on those involved.

The only S-tier 1v1 tournament Nili has ever played in was the one organized by Gamerlegion to which he got invited to. I wouldn't worry about him qualifying to anything.

I don't know why people are so surprised about Nili abandoning aoe2 and trying his luck in aoe4. After all, how many failures can one man take before giving up?

At first thought 100k seems a lot for the first version of N4C (Red Bull had 100k on its fifth), but they actually have to play AOE4, and for several days. A 100k prizepool seems like a fair compensation.

My biggest concern is if AoE2 will suffer if AoE4 flops (as a game and as an e-sport).
I dont beleive AoE4 is viewer friendly enough for the latter, and I dont enjoy playing it myself.

I will however tune in and be present for N4C to support (muted on my potato computer), while playing AoE2 on the other.

Its rarely of any use hating your half-brother for getting a bigger Christmas gift, you often forget you got a bigger birthday gift a couple of months ago.

In a Happy World we can all co-exist. With, or without Nilis current skillset.

By pretty much any objective metric he should be invited for his performances so far. He is the nr. 1 on the AoE4 ranking from @Adico that's also used to seed the players. He won one of two S-Tier tournaments and got in the semi's of the second one. From the 3 A-Tier tournaments, he reached the semi's and Quarters and didn't play in the third event. The only other players who didn't have a finish outside of the top 8 are VortiX and MarineLord. If anyone shouldn't have been invited it is DeMuslim, as he didn't really do well outside of his performance in the Steelseries Prime Cup.

I get that it's juicy because of the conflict of interest, but I feel like any objective measure would've seen Viper being invited regardless, unless you invite nobody, which is a whole different subject.

But stop making sense. Viper was obviously invited because of the conspiracy of nili and viper being friends and in same team and because nili is hosting in GL gamehouse.

Should be no invites IMO as the rankings are not really established at this point. But this is the whole issue, when there is a conflict, we don't know whether the people making decisions are acting in good faith or if it's because of the conflict... which is why you should generally try to avoid them.

There is enough conflict of interest, Viper's invitation is irrelevant to be honest.

I think most of the controversy is due to Viper's own openness about how uninterested he is in AoE4 (at least for the moment). Even AoE4 lovers would probably prefer a fully-dedicated and motivated player who would provide the best games. Even if Biper started consistently training AoE4 today, it feels like he is already a bit behind the current leaders, and his prospects in the tournament don't look great. Personally, I think having Bipey is fine, and will likely drive viewership (always a nice bonus).

My issue is that they are including the winners of two of the S-tier tournaments, but not the third. This is made a bit more ridiculous by the fact that Genesis was likely the least competitive of the 3 tournaments, and The Winter Championship the most competitive, with multiple qualifying rounds etc. The official statement on this is that if Viper had won SteelSeries, then the winner of Winter Championship would receive an invite to NC4. So it cannot be an issue of Winter Championship not being good enough to provide a candidate. The issue seems to be exclusively that one of the qualifiers would have 3 winners, and one would have 2 winners. This just doesn't really seem like a huge issue tbh. I think most AoE4 fans would prefer the winner of the winter championship to be invited, and understand that it creates 5 qualifier spots instead of 6.

Now, this may all prove to be a moot point, since it is at least likely that the winner of Winter Championship will qualify for NC4, but it's going to be pretty shitty if they don't.
