New interface in Voobly's Community Patch

After initial implementations that required modern operating systems and high end computers to run or where more efficient but had to reuse the existing interface, we've finally arrived at a new, highly compatible and very clear new design for the resource interface for the 1.6 Community Patch.

This new interface is fully integrated into the game code and does not require the use of the "Overlay" we had been using to show the additional elements in the screen. Therefore, it is compatible with old computers and old operating systems.

I have the seem feelings. Why does Voobly still exists? Why don't these players move to DE? It would be great if we had just 1 platform for this game where all players play.

Now we have DE as the superior version (in my opinion), while also having Voobly. Also HD still exists and still has a player base. I have no idea if gameranger and other similar platforms still exists to play AoE2.

I really wish we had 1 platform for everyone and everyone put the same effort into the same platform to make that platform even better.

@Lokalo @AttilaTheHun , there are many people with old computers who can't play DE. Besides they're completely different things, one is done by a massive corporation and the other is community driven. When DE gets abandoned we'll once again have to rely on community projects to keep playing the game. Hopefully the matches on the "Voobly" of that future are somehow running on servers instead of P2P, because going back to that kind lag after playing DE would be a hard pill to swallow.

We have DE yes but if microsoft some day close the servers maybe you will want to have voobly, and remember that microsoft closed the servers once, hope it will never happen, but everything in this life has a start and the end.

For me the ideal would be that both would be together, but sadly that will never happen.

Lag is an issue yes but versus similar region players its not noticeable and the pathing and smoothness of the game (clicking, placing farms, the cursor, toggling between buildings) is even better than DE imo

I don't want to go in backwards direction but the fact that the Voobly community has kept it alive and implemented the DE civs into the original game says we have something to fall back to in case microsoft decides to stop the servers (following the decline of Aoe IV which may happen, it happened to Aoe III so you never know what can happen)

Be careful, there are a lot of people on this forum who will have you believe that pathing is actually superior on DE than userpatch.

You don't understand something so you want it to perish? What is this stupid logic.
You're also incredibly naive if you think voobly not existing would make DE better. Far from that. If anything, it would make DE worse because there would be no competition. Microsoft won't hire entirety of voobly staff - if they were willing to do that, they would have done it already.

Voobly has lots of reasons to exist. It has FAR better lobby system. Actually working team games. Much more options with game modes and custom scenarios. Voobly actually works on windows 7 etc. unlike DE.

The main issue that i see is that everytime i have watched games on voobly, they are still using the same patch we were using before DE (wololokingdoms civs until rise of rajas,UP 1.5rc) so all this heavy work from pancrol and his team is going full unnoticed by the remaining playerbase there, which imo is a waste of efforts.

They shoudl at least enforce the 1.6 rc and quality life changes to the old WK version so the playerbase that is still playing there would keep evolving as the main playerbase from the DE so the game wouldn't be that different other than the civs and balance.

I play on DE, because everyone plays on DE, new Balance is on DE, and yes, even though they looked weird to me in the beginning, I really enjoy the new graphics and cant imagine going back to the old ones.

But my AoE-heart belongs to Voobly. I started playing at HD, and when i finally got Voobly going, maybe a year after UP1.5, it felt like a new World. Playing a 1v1 against someone from the same Continent on Voobly is still the smoothest experience I ever had playing AoE 2 online. Maybe if you have a super high end gaming PC, DE might be better, but i was able to play without any lag with my OLD laptop. After DE came out I bought a new one for 550€ and with DE it performs worse then my old laptop did with Voobly.

Also the Lobby System and Community features on Voobly are far superior, it was so easy to add friends, invite them to (rated!) games in a Lobby. On DE if you are queing for a 1v1 you will most likely face a stranger that you wont have any contact with after someone left the game, until you randomly run into him again a month or so later. With DE you have to use Steam or be on a seperate discord server to connect with people. Voobly had all in one platform, the Community felt much more alive over there.


If Microsoft shuts down the servers and players are moving back to Voobly, I certainly wouldnt mind. Especially after seeing this.

Theres zero community feature in the game on Voobly (except spec chat if that counts), its unfair to compare a kinda tailor made platform (Voobly) with a game (DE). Its like saying Voobly sucks becoz you cant play with people on Gameranger while you can play with MS store players on Steam.

Oh setting up voobly from scratch was a pain back in the day. I am sure someone can help you set it up but you basically need a mod called Wololokingdoms to play HD civs and 1.6 Game Data Mod to play the DE civs on voobly. You also need to have the original version of the games on Steam for the mod to translate the game files to Voobly (AoC)

I actually didn't notice the Kappa there the first time I read it either.
