To download the game, you need to buy the HD version at Steam. There are three expansions too.

Age of Empires II (2013) on Steam

Age of Empires II has been re-imagined in high definition with new features, trading cards, improved AI, workshop support, multiplayer, Steamworks integration and more!

You can play on Steam or you can register an account at Voobly (https://www.voobly.com/) and download the WololoKingdoms mod to play the HD version from Steam with its expansions (if you buy) at the platform.

if you're new, most of the players on New Player lobby on voobly don't use the expansions, so if you don't want to buy them and wait for DE to come out, that is I think, a better choice!

But it may well be worth waiting two months, because then you will get everything above, plus the entirely new Definitive Edition, for just $5 dollars more. And the DE edition will be be what the 'expert players' will be playing most likely, although it's not guaranteed. This all depends on your budget, and if your system can handle DE. You'll need to check the requirements. You're starting at a time of change for AoE, which is great, but can also be confusing...

Keep checking the price of the full bundle. Sometimes they offer it very cheaply. If it goes close to $5, you can buy it, as then you won't waste any money if you also buy DE later. But it might just be easier starting with DE anyway, rather than learning WK now, and then having to change to DE so soon after.
