In the abstract, I like that joke but that’s an incredible lack of awareness to make that joke publicly in front of the one person who could face repercussions for it and whose presence at LAN tournaments has most been in jeopardy.

Mr Yo handled it well, instantly distanced himself from it and left the subject but with how China is, he could still get in trouble for that. I really hope he won't face backlash after returning home... very poor behavior by Nili. He should be aware of possible consequences for the player and yet he still chose to do that...
Man, this sucks. Mr Yo had to miss out on previous two huge LANs and when he finally managed to arrive at one, he gets quickly thrown under the bus by the organizer.

Otherwise NAC 4 has been a high level event, but it was really stupid from Nili make a joke, which may give trouble to one of the players in their home country.

When Nili wants to be a top tournament organizer, he should control himself and not make jokes about international politics in the tournament streams.

Nili is far and away the best tournament host in AoE2. He consistently brings well-organized professional events with top tier Age content.
But holy **** he just cannot help shoving his foot in his mouth at every turn.
Vivi got banned from streaming for simply seeing a Taiwanese flag on Liquipedia, and Nili didn't stop to think for half a second that there could be real world consequences joking about Taiwan with the only Chinese player?

Spoken like someone who doesn't live in a place where you can't freely say it and/or discuss it.

For someone in Germany or a western state it might be a no harm joke, for someone else (say, Mr. Yo a valued and beloved figure of aoe2 pro scene,) it might mean potentially the elimination of their ability to provide for themselves and their family. The aim was to make Mr. Yo uncomfortable, and given the potential consequences of being merely involved in such a discussion (Vivi had his streaming access reduced for the mere appearance of a Taiwanese flag,) it is inexcusable to put a colleague in harms way in such a manner. Inexcusable.

Regardless of what you believe the world should be like -- It is a very selfish, privileged, ignorant, and unprofessional thing to do given the potential ramifications -- who make no mistake -- would only be borne by Mr. Yo.

People don't watch aoe2 for bad political jokes meant to espouse the joker's political leanings/perception of their own intelligence.

If Nili wants to shout “Taiwan #1“ in the square every June 4, that’s fine as far as I’m concerned. However, he shouldn’t be doing that while interviewing the most important current member of the AoE2 community from the PRC because that sort of thing can put that person (and the community more generally) at risk. It’s the behavior of a 14 year old who wants to show how smart he is but who lacks the maturity to do it in an empathetic manner.

As a Taiwanese player, I have to say although we've been threatened by China for a long time. Mr. Yo still has a huge fan base here and most of the time we avoid talking about political issues while playing aoe with players from China. Even though Mr. Yo handled it properly, anyone maliciously report to the authorities might force him difficult to attend lan events anymore. Making political jokes to those who lived in an authoritarian country in public is just not wise at all.

Yes kind of a thoughtless sentence there from Nili but seriously the ones who are going to report Mr Yo for this moment and try to maliciously get him banned/in trouble are the real problem (Yes the internet is full of such b*tch*ss losers). I am not saying Nili isn't at fault here, he made a political joke again and he will face the repercussions of it. I am saying as a person on the internet, we should be smarter and try not to participate in "cancel" culture regarding such issues, as inevitably it's going to end in more headaches for either Nili and Yo (even worse for Yo because the more this drama thread explodes, the more support someone gets to make a case against him)

If he was only mentioning Taiwan, it's surely fine. However, when it comes to "You're not allowed to say Taiwan here", it's more about the freedom of speech. Anyways, I'm glad Mr. Yo didn't take any risk for any further.

NAC 4 is an amazing tournament so far. Nili should seriously consider if his sense of humor is hurtful.

Just wanted to clarify on the freedom here. Actually people are free to complain about political issues, but they are not encouraged to make a public speech about it. Namely, you can complain about the policy or the government with another person, and if that person tape-records it and sends the evidence to the police, you are still fine. Police won't care about it because they know people complain about things all the time. However, if you make a public speech to hundreds of people and raise your objection to the policy or governments, you may be in trouble. That's why Chinese streamers don't want to talk about politics in their channel.

Yo probably won't get in trouble since he avoided the conversation, but if the organizer publicly claims that this is a lan party for a group of people who strongly support the independence of RoC, it may jeopardize Yo's opportunity to join the lan party next time for obvious reasons.

Since this topic's title is related to the casters..
In my opinion all casters and caster duos are great, very different styles well matching from Hera/Lierreyy to the usual T90/Dave. Also any fear and doubt about Dash as a caster for me is totally off the table now as it feels very natural having him in the mix as I think he improved and adapted a lot.

Very strong first 2 days overall. Only the small games during the breaks feel a bit cringy sometimes.

It's very irresponsible to make jokes at the expense of another person while staying free of consequences yourself.

I've seen streamers get their entire careers terminated for showing Taiwan on stream, without even taking a stance on political views.

Casting has been amazing so far. T90 just explained drafting for me, didn’t really know how it worked before and just ignored it. Casters are really taking care of new viewers.

I think Dash interrupts too much. Often he doesn't take time to acknowledge someone else, maybe because he's focusing on keeping the action moving. In any case, not my favorite

Maybe guys are over estimating AOE2 scene in China. It is a small comunity, and the government wont give a **** about it. Vivi got banned for a day or several days as a warning because the Douyu platform don't want to get themself in any possible trouble.
