Terrain blending (a.k.a. 'layered terrain') is a new feature in AoE2:DE that lets you combine two different types of terrain in the same map squares. This greatly increases the variety of terrains that are possible for you to feature in your maps! See the below image for a demonstration of how this works.
Each terrain block has a sign that gives info on the terrain when you click on it. There are also units along the bottom-left edge of the map that change the map's color mood when you select them, and an Elephant unit that moves your screen to the opposite terrain block of the last sign you clicked on when you select the Elephant.
This is meant to be a 'visual dictionary' for you to browse terrain options by seeing them fully rendered instead of scrolling through lists in the map editor. It's fun to look around at everything even if you're not making a mod!
How Terrain Blending Works:
Here are some screenshots:
Full map
Snowy Underbrush layered over 2D Shoreless Water
Ice layered over Azure Shallows
Jungle Underbrush layered over Foundation Grass
Ice layered over Black
Jungle Grass layered over Swamp Shallows
Note: This map takes longer to load than most other maps.
Thanks everyone! Let me know what you think!
