Tournament is over, watch my last post on this thread for the recap =) Thanks for the interest!

Hello everyone,

Did you ever like playing with someone but there is a huge skill gap between you? In those cases, it is such a pain to find a fun and balanced game to play together, therefore you end up not playing with him anymore.
That's a really sad story :cry: but don't worry I have the solution! :smile:

Merry-Go-Rounds is a map especially made for you guys! And today I announce the first tournament ever played on it! So ask your brother that don't play much, this childhood friend that didn't tryhard as much as you or anyone you like to come and play good games of AoE II where everyone feel signifiant, valued and true teamwork matters.

Quick answers (more details below):
  • When? The 22th of September from ~12:45 GMT to ~20 GMT (at the latest!), Yes everything will be done in one afternoon/evening! (You'll have to be around the whole time (a break is scheduled don't worry).
  • What? A mini 2v2 true FMT (Friends May Team) tournament on MGoR ! (8 Teams, Double elimination)
  • Why true FMT? Because Extra vils will be given according to elo, therefore all teams in the tournament will be balanced.
  • For who? Any ETK and Allies of the order(everyone) can enter (https://discord.gg/3qxFykt). You need to have at least 15 ranked 1v1 games on HD or Voobly, that you didn't lose on purpose or played against someone with more than 200 ELO difference with you. (We're trusting you, no smurfs please!! That's a small tournament for fun, don't ruin it <3 )
  • Where? On HD or Voobly, as the players prefer. If a team cannot* play on Voobly, HD will be used.
  • How to sign up? Post an answer on this thread or contact me by any means (discord, voobly, steam). When you sign up tell me the elos of both players and a team name if you want to have one.
  • What if I don't have a teammate? Join the ETK discord and ask around, I'll try to match people that are motivated to play.
  • Any prizes? Yes (more details below)
  • Any other prerequiste? Speaking English, being nice etc. Respecting schedule! (1 player on the team should have read this whole post and the workshop entry entirely (except the "the game designer approach and goals" section).
*Use HD only if someone cannot physically play on Voobly (FP issue or anything preventing to play correctly).

Everyone should be present on the ETK Discord server, on #merry-go-rounds-2v2-tournament channel during the whole tournament (From 12:45 GMT to 20 GMT (at the latest)). That's where results and recs will be shared, drawings of the brackets aswell etc. (https://discord.gg/3qxFykt)

Except for the final, encounters will be only 1 game of Merry-Go-Rounds "BO5 ingame", that is 49 mins maximum igt, therefore 29 to 33 mins maximum real time. Which basically mean that you have ~15 mins to announce the results and hop into the next game. There will probably be some delay, it's inevitable! But being late "on purpose" will be sanctionned by a disqualification (if you don't answer or play the next game 15 mins after the last game finished).
A break is scheduled as shown in the picture, it will help get back into the schedule and have a finishing time closer to expected.

For those who don't know what is a double elimination tree, it means that when you lose, you go into a "sub-tournament" to have a chance to get back and play the final, so you still have a chance to be 1st! On the picture above, L1, L2 ... means "Loser of match 1", "Loser of match 2" etc. Everyone start in winner's bracket.

Settings At least one member of each team should now how to host MGoR and set up everything correctly (read the workshop entry carefully!) Please do it, it's really important!

  • Starting Age: Standard
  • Ending Age: Standard
  • No Treaty
  • Lock Teams: checked
  • Lock Speed: checked
  • Allow cheats: no

Lobby settings (left):
  • Slot 1 should be color blue(1)! His teammate should be red(2)
  • Adversaries should be teal(5) and purple(6)
  • All teams should be on " - "
  • No empty slots! Fill it with AIs !!!

  • Best-of 5 (It's default you have nothing to do)
  • No-boom (destroy the palissade near the statue)
  • No-skip (destroy the palissade near the rug)
  • Kick AIs (destroy palissade near "nine bands" of each row with the outpost being green, yellow, gray or orange)
  • Give extra villagers according to the table below (ask me if you need any details about how to give any of those)

Voobly ELO will be preferred if there is contradiction.

Seeding will probably be done according to how much the team is used to the map (that's pretty subjective, but it's a really small tournament), before the start of the tournament you'll give us a familiarity to the map from 0 (never played it) to 10 (I have mastered every aspects of it)

Civilization choice
Each player can pick their civilization and the civ of their allies (for team bonuses), a civilization cannot be picked by the same team twice during the tournament (apply to allies aswell), except at the start of the final, where "already used civ" are reset to 0.

On Voobly just use "Hidden civs".

No slinging
Sending tribute is forbidden before reaching castle age.
Also, you can NEVER send tribute if you are 2 or more elo layer below your teammate (e.g. 15xx Voobly while you're ally is 17xx Voobly).

Prizes
1st to 8th:
  • Have their nicknames (and team names) on a "hall of fame" inside MGoR. (Special mention for 1st and 2nd)
1st team:
  • 2 times 5$ Steam gift card.
  • Will have a special "easter-egg" inside MGoR, that they can suggest and discuss with me. (That goes from renaming the monument to adding special triggers when you do something in particular, be creative! =) )
  • Will receive an honorous discord role : "True FMT player"
2nd team:
  • Will receive either a big picture (composed of many snapshots) or a small video, compiling all the best moments they lived during the tournament. My sick MS paint skills will be at your service =P
Pyroptere is the admin in charge of the tournament, he has the right to change any rules as he pleases him! (But he really care about everyone and want them to have a pleasant experience!) I'm just writing that, because I'm sure I forgot plenty of stuff to precise and want everything to work properly. (Prizes won't be removed, that you can be sure! (maybe some additions :wink: )

Just in terms of the schedule, you've allocated no time for LB R1. Fun idea though

@paroofex Thanks, feel free to sign up while there is still room (currently 3 teams over 8).

@Timotheus_ The "color-blocks" are grouping the games that can be played at the same time, there is no one yet in the loser bracket at the start. (Game 11 could have been grouped with Game 9 and 10, but I put a break there, to synchro the two brackets aswell (more break time for people winning all their games)).
Thanks for the feedback, yes I hope it will be ton of fun =) AoE II need something for those big skill gap games.

After writing this post, I realized that 15 mins will be short^^, especially for the first round. (that's why I asked people to come for 12:45 GMT)

I'll try to give you a quick insight on the results of the tournament and a bit of feedback about my first experience as a tournament host. Of course looking forward for a second edition =) Stay tunis!

Short version

Ranking and Rewards

# Teams signed-up: 5

All received a discord title according to their achievement in the tournament:
  • True FMT 1st edition
  • True FMT 1st edition - Finalist
  • True FMT 1st edition - Champion
In addition to their names in the ingame hall of fame.

  • 4th: Scarface + LB11 + iViktorius.
    • Scarface received a twitch subscription to Lynx.
  • 3rd: EZ123 (Jon803, ])are])evil, prankill ).
    • Jon received a twitch subscription to Lynx.
  • 2nd: SolTou and TheMcGreevy.
    • Will receive soon a compilation of their best moments in the tournament.
  • 1st: MJoe and Pierretto.
    • Both of them received 5 CHF (~5$) on Steam money,
    • Will work with me for a cool easter-egg to add to MGoR, honoring them.
    • MJoe received a twitch subscription to NRQ.

Tournament host experience

With only 5 teams signed-up we decided, to go with a "Every team play every other team":

The start of the tournament was pretty messy, right away one of the team was missing at the startup time. We decided to go with 4 teams only. Unfortunately one of those had big issues with HD while playing this scenario, they desynced every game (it is something that happened to some people with MGoR and for the big majority it never happenned).
We tried a lot to fix things up, until we gave up on it and continued the tournament with only 3 teams (meaning 3 games before the final).
Finally, bored by playing two times in a row the same team, one of the finalist team decided to give up after the second game, providing a "1 game final" only.

What saved the day?
Lynx and I were pretty motivated so we casted a MGoR game that happened outside of the tournament and we played showmatches.
The two most interesting ones were:
  1. Voobly against the team not able to play on HD
  2. HD against the winner of the tournament.
You can find the recs below and cast above.

The 2 games played by the finalists were treated as being the final and NRQ was able to cast both of them followed by the showmatch "Casters vs Winners". So basically his stream was not lobby simulator at all, but high game density and quality.

What lessons for future editions?
  • I'll probably won't open it to HD (or will need a specific testing beforehand to be sure that they can play properly their games).
  • I won't cast it live anymore, but ask participants to not spoil the results and cast with the recs the day after or something like that.
  • The same settings for every game can get a bit boring after a while, I'm thinking about more variety in settings for 2nd edition, aswell as a better civ picking system, maybe drafting?
  • The 2nd edition will be announced way more in advance, to have the time to find more teams.
