In your quest of moving people to Voobly like many other crusaders (Robo, Jineapple, and other usual for whom solution to every problem is move to voobly) on reddit you have ignored one crucial aspect.
In the end this is just a game which most people like to play with people they already know. Most people play it casually and have no desire to go very high level. Even if I am convinced to move to voobly its hard to convince my 2-3 other friends when we only gather together once every 2-3 days.
Also if I introduce a new friend to aoe2 what is easier between the 2 options below.
- Buy the game on steam, install, ready to play. Rest of the guys already there everything good to go.
OR
- Buy the game on steam, install. Install community patch, install voobly. Go through 2 page long guide by Jineapple. If you were lucky then no troubles else you troubleshoot (NAS, something not working)

HD is no where ready to be used for competitive play and tournaments but for casual players it works just fine. This is why it has more players.
