Awesome tourney once again, thanks for running it. AoC definitely needs more of this kind of community event.

Perhaps a high resource map with more space (like Graveyards) would have a higher chance of producing a great final? It produced an amazing Q8 last time, but I felt like Chaos Pit was pretty constricting in terms of space and resources, especially the lack of stone. Though I 100% hold up my hands that I was a noob for not grabbing enough space on the outside despite being Celts :o-o:ops:

I would love to see one qualifier on a day like monday/tuesday/wednesday/thursday. While the Sunday evening final is easily doable for most people, in case of a busy schedule in the weekend, it's hard to play those qualifiers. Especially in combination with other tournament games that are often scheduled on saturday/sunday.

Thanks for the tournament, enjoyed watching it.

Having a map which has stone is definitely important in my opinion. Without stone it nerfs 95% of civs, making civs such as mongols, turks, saracens, etc weak. So, if Chaos pit was tweaked so there was stone on the outside, I'd say it would be perfect!

sooo great settings, i'm sure you worte them down at 4 am while being drunk with the other poker-nerds 8-)

only thing i didnt like was the way of picking civs in the last one (probly because i was the last one to chose 111) and the map sadly hardocre favors strats without Castles/BBTs.

for future settings, in case you need some crazy maps (just some small wishes from nc-maps, in case you need links, just say it)
-villrabia with spanish/persians
-nC@Swamp with vikings/chinese (vikings was the only civ that was missing 24)
-Icephone with huns/mayans

As Final game map you should use Migration (just think about the Tyrant FFA king of the hill match some years ago)
Probly one of the best maps for this Setting.

Again thx for making this happen. Looking fwd to KotH 3

I was thinking what makes this mode so fun to play. My answer is - the moments when people really work together as a team, communicate and kill the middle, that's the beauty of this setup. Therefore I'd love some things to be improved.
1) Maps - Personally I don't like the maps where you can't really build around middle (CM_Ripples, Atlantean relics, Ghostlake). IMO migration would be awesome map, Border Dispute..
2) Qualifiers - There should be real difference between high and low qualifiers otherwise I don't really understand why it's splited. I know it's hard to draw a line, but having higher rated player in low qualifier ruins the game, same as having low ones in high qualifiers. In other words, if higher rated people can't play in low qualifiers, lower rated shouldn't have the choice of choosing which one they want to play.
3) Civs - different civs were interesting, though almost every game one civ was clearly better than other and people lacking experience did wrong decision which put them even more behind more experienced players with better civs. The civs in last qualifier were so random, teoretically Timotheus and teutonic had almost no chance of winning if others were picking correctly. Letting 7th player taking goths is absolutely ridiculous and all 6 picking before Feanor deserved to lose just for their picks. Last finals with hidden pick civ was definitely better choice and way more fair for players. I don't want to be in the Finals next time, drawn as 8th trying to stop the goth spam with korea...
4) Sometimes the first minutes are quite boring, because nobody wants to mess with anybody else, all walling, booming. Fighting anyone is a bad decision, because regardless of the result of the fight both people are losing, compared to others. I'd like to see people forced to play more aggresively since the start (having all res in the middle, possibly having wood there like atacama would force earlier action aswell. Another option is having smaller map, I can imagine having 3size map for 8 players, we tried it and it was really better.


Hopefully next time, people will have more experience, which would make the games way more entertaining, than when after 45 mins people realize there's something weird in the middle. Was a great fun anyways, thx Nilpferd for hosting this, you're the true King of the Hippo.

*Of course some of the criticism directed against me is also due to the fact that many viewers just forget that we don't have all reveal like the caster does :lol:.

That's why you have chat, if you all played exactly what was needed you'd have stopped Feanor. The teamplay in the Finals was very poor actually, which turned it into quite dissapointing game. Goth is holding the middle, 50 years left, none of you paused to ask others what to do, how to kill the goth, what he has, none gave any orders what to do.
My civ choice (saracens) was also criticzed, but I think people have realized that it is actually one of the best civs in this kind of game, because of the market bonus and the very strong tech tree.

If persians had redemption and block printing, I would have gone for persians, though. The only civ choice I don't understand is mayans... there is no way you could seriously hold the wonder against SO's

How can you ever criticize picking mayans, when 1 sentence before you say you'd go for redemption and block printing. Moreover player picking saracen as 2nd choice shouldn't be allowed to criticize player picking mayans as 8th choice, really :wink: .

I liked the settings in overall, just 2 things:

1) In Final I wouldve allowed to pick civ freely, so people can come up with a strategy and we can see it in the stream.

2) I would prefer to have players in same skill level to play in an FFA. In some cases, the "noobish" players didnt focus enough in the middle, they preferred to troll around and kill the ones who were next to them. Also sometimes the noobish players weren't being a real threat to their neighbours, so the neighbours just freely boomed and took away the important resources + mapcontrol. Maybe 2 Finals with high and low ranked players would be better (i.e. 2 winners and 2 prizes).

It should be perfectly possible to have LOS reveal for all players further around the wonder via editing the .rms. Sounds like a good idea to me. Some of the times when people get somewhat easy wins, one factor contributing to that is that you have very little idea what's going on elsewhere in the map - how strong a position they have on the wonder and whether other players are also in a strong position to contest. I know in the final I needed to push somebody to get more space and res, but I could only do it half-heartedly because I had to leave army at the front to potentially contest the wonder if the clock got too low, and in the end due to being split between the two tasks I neither took any territory nor contested the wonder well enough.

I prefer the current format to this. There wouldnt be enough participants for 2 tournaments and if it were civ pick we would see a lot of the same

to be honest i find the thought of teaming up against a single player to later try and win the game yourself is kinda strange ... In that case it will be 7 vs 1 at all times and the game can go forever 1111 + the fact I don't like betraying people xD

The chaos pit version in Clan masters has stone on the outside if I remember correctly.

i picked mayans because i hoping for a good map with a lot of gold and to mass 10k+ Gold (same plan as Max on the beduins game) an then just spam endless eagls with some plum support and rams. Thought about the mass palladin option, but that's a bit too risky :D at the end i only got 3 goldspots on my map :cry:

Thanks for the tournament again.

I think it doesnt matter if there are high and low rated players in the same qualifier.
I mean in qualifier 2 it was 3 very low rated players (buddy, derpina and me) and 3 pro gamer (mbl, vns_yellow( saymyname) and ACCM) and also robo who is high rated aswell. The game was very entertaining and in the end buddy won it.

I think this is what entertains. Seeing "noobs" beat pros with team work and waiting for the right moment. Also if you look into for example champions league in soccer, in every group you see 2 Top teams and 2 weaker teams and not a separation of top and bottom.

Keep it easy guys and dont make it too complicated. Also memb had his viewer tournament with only "noobs" and it was really entertaining to see something different beside the meta game.

looking forward to KotH3. If it is a 2v2v2v2 i would suggest to do a kind of quarter and semi final. Otherwise just 4 qualifiers can be played with 32 players instead of nearly 64 for KotH2.

When I received my $250 from WiC, my first intention was do an FFA event, because I felt this kind of event was missing in the scene (didn't happen). Although I failed hard in both of my Hippo attempts, I really like this setting. When I merge my ideas from then with King of the Hippo, it could look like that:

Final Weekend
1x 7 Players Final KotHill FFA
7x 5 Players Pre-Finals KotHill FFA (35 Players)

Qualifying Weeks
35x 3 Players Qualifiers KotHill FFA (105 Players)
if <105 Sign-ups, some Qualifiers are 1v1 KotHill
if >105 Sign-ups, some Pre-Qualifiers are 1v1 KotHill

Qualifier Losers could also play for their fun during the Final Weekend.

This. So goths as a civ choice def werent OP. People just let goth be undisturbed in the final, and thus let him have insane eco and a player like Feanor surely will use that advantage when it was given to him.

For example, they doubled skittle as turks, mongols went all in to kill max eco instead of playing the objective, saracen mined all of max's stone and then sat on base with huge mame army, celt fought with spanish who was doing champs the entire game, and nobody even looked at Feanors way.

So, conclusion: Many "WTF are the players thinking, letting goth rule free??"- thoughts and a lot of laughs.

And finally, I'd like to see this as a weekly format, even without prizes. Way more entertaining to watch than the "regular" tournaments with every single game having maya/mongol/hun and the 4th civ being vik, spain, china, pers, depending on the map.

Technically Skittle (as Turks) attacked the maya and myself at the same time. I had no intention of attacking him until I saw 15 cannons and hc attacking me. If he attacks both of us at the same time ... :roll: :P
