Schedule, Main Event, Opening Matches​

Thank you all for making an incredible first round of the main event. We have seen some absolutely outstanding games, and we are beyond excited to move onto the group stage.

We have an incredible line-up of matches prepared for you all, and in order to avoid ending the broadcasts too late, we have decided to move the starting time of the group stage from 15.00 GMT to 14.00 GMT.

All games are played as best of five - the draft preset can be found here.

2. Recognition/Achievement for players
3. Justification for the prize

On the other hand, if Ro32 was part of qualifiers, it might have
1. Elevated the qualifiers
2. Made the main event more competitive, hence more prestigious

So, there are points on both sides. I preferred it because now the invited players got more practice and whoever won "earned" their spots in the Ro16.

I'm not saying this trying to detract from the tournament. It is just a little weird to be told the main event starts from the Ro32 when the production quality of the main event starts at the Ro16.

you are a fun guy with ur statement, for you info the production is not round of 32, because sadly im not redbull and dont have same budget.

Last year round of 64 was main event, but according to your arguments should be all qualification event because last year i had no "pro" production.

I'm not trying to attack you. I was genuinely curious about the difference between calling something a qualifier and a main event. You did not have the "pro" production last year but when you do have it it naturally draws a line wherever it is applied because it is a raised standard and we associate that with the "main" event of AoE2's most prestigious tournament.

@nimanoe said it was valid to think of the Ro32 as the final round of qualifying rather than the first round of the main event so I did not think it would be objectionable to suggest this.

Imo it makes sense to start the main event where invited players start to play. They are invited to the main event after all, not to the last round of the qualifiers.

Well you could also hype that as "no spot guaranteed" but I agree. I think maybe the ideal barring the budgetary constraints Memb alluded to would have been group stage in Ro32 rather than Ro16.

It is a main event because the event´s organiser said it´s a main event, that´s it 11

I think it's definitely some middle ground between the Qualifier and the Group stage. In terms of format, it's similar to the Qualifier, with a Single Elimination Stage. However, with the additional players playing and the fact that none of the matches are happening at the same time, it's definitely distinct from the qualifier as well. You have 4 Bo5s a day, which is also similar to the group stage and it's only 1 week off from the group stage, compared to multiple weeks after the qualifier.

As you brought up Mapu and the production team, you're right that it's different in that regard from the group stage, but we did have Riley interviewing, new overlays and videos, which make it more similar to the group stage imo.

All in all, I think calling it part of the Main Stage is fair for the reasons mentioned, although I wouldn't really have called it Main Stage opening matches as in the calendar post or Main Stage Play-Offs as in the handbook, but rather something like Main Stage Play-In or Main Stage Challengers.
