It is with great excitement and joy that we present to you, the third and biggest instalment of King of the Desert. Once again, we will experience the best players in the world fight on the map we all love - Arabia.

The tournament features an incredible 50,000$ prize pool brought to you by PinzTec and Microsoft - this will undoubtedly motivate the players to perform at their very best.

$50,000.00 PRIZE POOL

King of the Desert 3 will span across six weeks from the 14th of September to the 25th of October. In the previous instalments, the tournaments have been purely single-elimination, but to spice things up and create more content for you, we’ll be running this year’s instalment also using the GSL style format. All games from the group stage and onwards will be streamed live - so you can expect to be sitting at the edge of your seat as you experience some of the best Age of Empires 2 as of yet.

All games will be cast by MembTV on https://www.twitch.tv/membtv - furthermore, the tournament offers open streaming. If you're interested in streaming this event, make sure to check this thread or the last page of the handbook.

We hope you are all as excited about this tournament as we are; we simply cannot wait to get started. We hope to see you all on stream for some of the best Age of Empires 2 ever.

I'm no expert but from what I understand about open streaming is that if you want to cast you have to show the sponsor/host banner. Much like in kotd3, you have to show the hosts banner.

It was NOT open streaming. Even not for non-english casts, otherwise Nacho would have loved to do more than just a cocast with Mario. It was the exact same situation as in RBW1.

The main event will only be streamed in english on the Red Bull twitch channel, but there will also be other language streams (to be announced). If you wish to apply to cast the main event please send me a message.

One can discuss the streaming policy of RBW, but framing it as being just because of personal dislike is the wrong way, certainly. From all people, not invited to do the main cast, Memb was one of the very few, that could still make very much use of it by changing his language to his native one and creating content on his channels. A favor even the Official casters did not get.

Im suuuuper excited for KotD3 considering all the recent results.
This tournament has the potential to be as legendary as CoT and I'm pretty sure we will witness the highest level of AoE this community has ever seen.

My only concern is the map...
I've heard many players complain that it generates too many awful maps.

I understand the idea of wanting to encourage agression from early on, but I hope people realize that too open maps favor the best civs even more. Which means more civ wins and less viable civs.

Anyway, Memb and Chrazini have never failed to deliver. This will be an epic tournament.

Memb was the one that said he was excluded from Redbull and then said, "so if we give information, we must be accurate on it." Then you have people literally making things up what streaming was allowed, a few people point out that isn't accurate, then we're told to not derail the thread?

Even though I am generally sympathetic towards Memb, I think I am a bit disappointed in Memb here. Moreover, discussing past dramas (whoever brought it up) on the eve of a BIG event organized by yourself is so counter productive.

 

Behind the scenes, you can speculate that memb would not restrict his tournament because he's gonna be excluded from premium casts if he does (revenge, and then membs channel dies)... I don't believe this though. I think the current model seems to be working. Sadly as it turns out higher numbers of people prefer watching other casters than memb, if we refer to nili, t90, t90's sidekick, nacho, Mario Ovalle,theviper, hera, mbl, and tatoh. Memb just hasn't taken off like some others for whatever reason. I'm glad he's here hosting the highest quality tournaments though!

Alright I'm sorry. I meant it as a joke because I know you've mentioned it before -- clearly it didn't work out!

 

Just curious, since big tournaments have become open streaming now which is nice for the community, how does that play out for the tournament organizer? If there are more popular casters they will pull in more viewers and more subs/donations than the organizer. Do those casters gift subs or a donation to say thanks to the organizer or does the tournament just benefit the most popular streamers more than the organizer? Not trying to start drama just genuinely curious. As a viewer I want all casters to do well if that is their goal. It’s good for the community. Thanks memb for organizing this.

Also viper is still #1 in everything except EW until proven otherwise although the gap has seemed to close more now than it has in a long time. Mr. Yo and liereyy are big threats.

It's important to note that era of casters putting their hand into their pocket and funding a tournament is more or less gone. It happens in small scale events still but it's much more usual now to have a sponsor or two.

Those who pay the piper can call the tune.

More often than not they have requirements and desires. Like Redbull choosing the casters they like on their English speaking channel. Microsoft rate tournaments by total views.

If t90 gets 50k and memb gets 5k and nili gets 10k Microsoft might say well done memb good tournament. Apply again and we will fund the next tournament.

If it was closed streaming and Memb got 20k viewers Microsoft might say this was a complete failure we will never fund a memb tournament again.

It's often a balance between sponsor happiness and what's best for the channel and sponsors come first all too often.

I really hope kotd is a double success. A successful event I can enjoy watching a good tournament for membs channel and he gets new viewers and follows and subs.

The competition has already started. Hera and Viper seemed to be grinding the last couple of days, then Jordan mentioned that KOTD3 seeding is based on the ladder and it made sense. Jordan is trying to secure a spot in the tournament himself.

Just watched a show match on kotd Arabia between viper and kasva. Viper voiced his concern at the amount of all the mole hills because it’ll lead to camping. Basically the entire series it played out like that. No one wants to take a bad engagement. I think any type of game that leads to both sides camping is frustrating to play and watch. The only positive is that Tatars probably would be picked a lot more. I hope chrazini realizes that maybe there should be more flat spaces like a mesa or just the ground. There should still be hills of course but right now there’s more elevation changes than there are flat spaces.

Liquidpedia has numerous errors everywhere. Liquidpedia is not official and you can not rely on any information there about the tournament. Always refer to the schedule here on aoezone or other social media posts from Memb or I.

 

It's so sad for today's semi final's accident which is definitely unfair to Yo for his time zone stopping the game for almost over 20 minutes in the middle of the match. In such an intense important game and in the middle of the late-night for Yo very easily to cause any player to lose focus.

 

Yo lost the last game because his 2 forwarding villagers were found out. He wanted to build siege workshop and monastery at the right of Lierrey's camp because there are more secondary resources there. In the end he built a forwarding camp from Lierrey's west, and Lierrey just migrated a bit east to those secondary resources. For me, that was the turning point, cause Saracens cannot match Khmer at late game.
