I was thinking about build orders for Khmer, and I had a thought: what if you didn't build any buildings in Dark age (except houses) and just put everyone on food?
After some experimenting, I came up with some build orders - both reaching Feudal with 17 pop + loom at 8:00. They require scouting the boar early.
The first time I simply put everyone on food under the TC, luring the 1st boar after 6 on sheep. After clicking up I sent 8 to build a lumber camp and sent 4 to stragglers until I had wood for a mill. I was able to build a stable upon reaching Feudal and produce 2 scouts (for 3 total) straight away. This build would have benefitted from luring deer, and I reckon I could have had eco upgrades earlier had I done so.
The next time I tried milling the berries in Dark age after I had 8 on boar. I then had villagers chop stragglers after clicking up to get the wood for a lumber camp. This build is probably better if not luring deer since I had the food to research the wood upgrade almost straight away (I could have instead created an extra scout for 4 total.)
I've put both the recs below (both against the Barbarian on Hard).
I may have paused a 'few' times, to simulate the speed of a more competent player ; )
Since I'm not really playing at a level to judge, I'm interested in how viable people think this sort of build/strategy is at a competitive level. The Khmer house bonus could even be quite useful here to protect villagers if needed.
