Although it has been mentioned in the past, I believe the timing is right for Frankish Paladin to join the game beyond being a 'hero unit' in the scenario editor.
The aim is not to buff an already powerful civ but to add another dimension to their gameplay. The fact the unit already exists removes many of difficulties (not all) in "adding a new unit" and the general resistance for change to the game we love. Having played the game for 20+ yrs, I am a staunch traditionalist for keeping the original 'soul' of the game (protected remarkably well IMHO). Perhaps this is why I feel like the Franks deserve this unit in normal gameplay now, since having been usurped (one could argue) as the dominant Cavalry civ.
Some in-game ideas for Frankish Paladin:
- Cannot be made but instead One Frankish Paladin unit is automatically generated when a castle is built (limited to 12 at any one time - see Chanson de geste)
- Additional at cost Castle Tech' "Éperon" that gives friendly units within five tiles of a Frankish Paladin +5% attack speed bonus (stack or no stack?)
Its unveiling could occur during the Franks turn in the monthly civ celebrations.
Anyway, I can dream - such a beautifully designed unit seems wasted to the stables, but I if I were to see that fleur-de-lis covered shield galloping over the plains into battle I believe my APM would increase by at least 5%!
