What a stupid and divisive comment. Why are you dividing AOE2 and AOE4 community? if anything, it should be a "RTS community". We are already the minority in the gaming world.

It's not a competition between the RTS games, well it shouldn't be. Btw AOE2 was NEVER the top RTS game in the first place for a long time (Broodwar and SC2 was, and arguably WC3). Stop living in a small bubble and stop having stereotypes against certain games just because it is something new. Try them out. If you don't like it, sure, but just respect that it's a DIFFERENT game, NOT an inferior game.

I personally love both AOE2 and AOE4. Recently I've only been playing AOE4 because I love learning a new game. AOE2 will always be the best RTS with team games in my opinion, but AOE4's game design has been very interesting, and dare I say, better than aoe2. In terms of pace, if you consider SC2 as the fastest paced RTS, AOE2 will be on the slowest end (yes, slower than WC3), but I feel AOE4 is on the middle ground, which I'm really enjoying.

Yeah, so stop dividing the RTS community and encouraging this division. Respect all RTS, try them out!

Objectively, AOE4 is a faster paced game. Not better, faster. Coming from SC2 background, even AOE2 doesn't have much micro aspect. Yes there's the xbow micro, mango micro, but compared to sc2, it isn't much. There's much more emphasis on macro. I am at rank 1291 ( Elo 1368) which I would guess is above average. To be sure I have only tried one civ so far but English has basically two micro things: spike ability for longbows and fire / move / fire. I definitely hope to discover some more.

I'm not sure if you've played the game enough to comment on the pace. ALL RTS gamers who's been playing RTS long enough and played at least quite a few different RTS games would agree with my comment. Not sure how to explain the pace but yeah, if you play at a above average level with depth, you'll know You see how you use the word "win"? It just shows you have a winning/losing mindset with AOE2 and AOE4, so it's hard to be objective in that case.

I keep saying, faster doesn't mean better. A LOT of players enjoy AOE2 because of the "slower" pace it has compared to other RTS, especially SC2.

Bugs and UI issues I definitely agree. But the game itself, the design of how the game is played, is very fun and unique. Just because something isn't AOE2, it doesn't mean it sucks.. just because you love AOE2, doesn't mean you have to hate on other RTS games.

I think everyone is entitled to their opinion, seems like you just want a vent. There is no need for that level of disrespect, no matter the frustration you are feeling.

I would argue that your commentary is relatively divisive. Out right telling someone their opinion is stupid does not exactly win people to your cause. I do agree that bashing AoE4 is pointless... But, if someone has an opinion on it, and wants to express it, fine. Ultimately, people will make up their own minds.

I also don't even think the authors comment was even antagonistic. Ya, they prefer AoE2 .. and they think AoE2 will have more staying power. What's so bad about that? .. .there has been plenty worse said. At the end of the day ... They are both just computer games, you can either love em or hate them. Play either, play both .... Hmm, I guess there are few things, but main thing is the "feel" as you play more. I think the BEST thing to say to "prove" this is for me to say, just try the game out for quite some time! but yeah:

1. Much harder to wall, hence multi-pronged harassment is relatively stronger. The more places to look at, the faster the game feels.
2. Higher tech units come out much faster (feudal rams, kts, MAA sometimes. Yes MAA is a higher tech unit)
3. Power spike from age up doesn't come into effect very quickly, hence making lower age units much more viable to use against higher age units
4. Villagers are VERY squashy compared to AOE2 (like SC2), reacting fast becomes much more important
5. Buildings die much quicker, even to feudal infantry or cavalry
6. Spears exist in dark age, and they are very strong compared to AOE2


I'm sure I can come up with many more if I put more thoughts into this. PLEASE know I'm not saying AOE4 is better, I'm saying it's faster. I played SC2, AOE2, and AOE4 at a quite a high level and in terms of pace, SC2 is fastest by far, AOE2 is slower and AOE4 feels in between. I can say that SC2 has all of the 6 points at at more of an extreme side (except point 1, but there are flying units..)

Isn't that similar to saying, if someone says "I want to punch/kill/cause harm to someone", and I say you shouldn't do that, or even say "that's stupid", I'm also being divisive or abusive?

I dont find aoe4 being faster tbh. Its early game might be faster yes, theres faster feudal time / feudal rams (it got nerfed along with the TC target fire buff tho) / trushing in dark age / etc, but the pace gets much slower from mid game onwards. Stone walls / tanky siege just drag out the game horrendously, especially on campy choky maps.

How many games have you actually played though especially after the meta has settled? (still not settled and will be a while, but at least after Genesis) At a high level, you can't really stone wall that easily unless maps are designed to be that way (just like BF or Arena in AOE2), tanky siege only applies to Chinese and the fact that siege can take out buildings much faster makes the pace much faster late game too. I've reached 2k on AOE2, and floating around top 150~300 in AOE4. So I think I have quite a unbiased opinion about this as I love both games.

AOE2 is much more about macro, delicacy (walling precisely as well as needing creativity sometimes), anda bit more importance on decision making compared to faster paced RTS imo. That's what's beautiful about AOE2. It DEFINITELY is slower, ask any high level player who plays BOTH games. Also, the reason a lot of AOE2 pros are trying AOE4 is NOT because they are getting paid to play that game from Microsoft (as explained by them multiple times), it's because THEY FIND IT FUN. Nothing wrong with that and I'm SURE they still love AOE2. I just don't get why we are turning this into a competition.

The reason I'm passionate about this is that this exact thing happened with Broodwar vs SC2 in Korea. SC2 is the "perfect RTS" that lived for a very long time and was the reason why Twitch boomed early 2010s. Never took off in Korea though because of close-minded people. Us Koreans are very conservative. The people who are bashing on AOE4 are exactly that at the moment. Could have both games do really well, if AOE4 brings new players to RTS, ultimately that's good for AOE2 as they are both RTS, and people might be curious on the roots of AOE4 if they enjoy it.

Look, both you and Hunyadi's comments shows the mindset of "that game sucks, no one should play it". I'm sure deep down you'll admit to this. That's what's really annoying. Why are we fighting and dividing ourselves? If you think it sucks, sure just don't play it. You don't have to keep pushing negativity towards that game. Why are we trying to promote negativity towards AOE4? You know that you can play both games right? and if you don't, fine, but there are a lot of people who enjoy AOE4.
