i just say i play a strategy game if it comes up- at the very least that sounds better than playing some FPS imo.
Will be interesting to see how this view will change with younger people- definitely less taboo there.

my gf plays Smite. when I showed her a viper stream she said she could never play a game like this :D in many years i never got her to play anything more than the William Wallace Campaign. but she understands a passion for gaming in general, so its fine.

It always feels akward to say to people you are playing age of empires, so often the answer is sth like "nice, i played that as a kid" ..... Then you are left with either letting them think you are playing the game like kids do, or having to explain it is actually a demanding and highly comeptitive game

Playing video games is far more mainstream than it was even three years ago so it's less likely to cause a problem but it should just be brought up at a time where there is a valid reason to mention it, like if you can relate something you were just talking about to something from AoE2 in an interesting way.
