Are we witnessing the final days of Nili as the MS tournament coordinator? Or can he maintain his power despite the very disappointing N4C viewer numbers?

Let's be also nice to him and at least give kudos that he again proved himself delivering a very organized and well produced event.

He also said that he wouldn't have done on AOE4 if he could go back in time.

But let's not kid ourselves that it raises many eyebrows that he assigns $100K+ to a tournament in his own channel.

I had never seing in aoe history and obsession like Aoezone has with AoE4 numbers. They enjoy way more watching AoE 4 numbers than AoE2's games.

well if he'd work for an organization that still values money, he would be a goner. But forgotten empires, sponsored by MS dont care about some petty 100k. So I believe they will keep on as nothing happened.

This. Right now, Polar is casting a DM semifinals, World RUmble finals are running, and "true AoE2 fans" have nothing better to do than check aoe4 viewer numbers

You can check numbers and watch Memb's stream easily although I only watch World Rumble right now, what's the point of attacking people? Two tabs are enough.

On the other hand, people who are watching numbers probably worried about future of AOE2 more than current state, so I can't blame them.

Nili delivered an awesome tournament, great interviews, great atmosphere, great stats. Only the game is....meh. I think he will be honest to himself, his final speech already showed that. If he streams age2 or hosts age2 tournaments I will tune in, eventhough i did not like his aoe4 aproach.

I do not agree.

Personally I can't find a reason to watch any AOE4 tournament, both competitively or atmospher wise.

Game related: Why would I watch a tournament if there is literally no micro potential except wololo conversion, no dancing archers of Liereyy, no Daut lure failures or no quick walls of Hera and Viper.

Let's say I watch it for LAN aspect and great atmoshphere: If bananas are not used for scaling, if there is no drunk Daut casting or if nobody is making comments regarding Jordan's wood, why would someone watch a tournament? Besides Dave's funny persona and a little bit Grubby contribution, there wasn't any sincere moments or memories that you can remember. Huge failure. I guess we will never have NAC2 like tournament, which was a lot more enjoyable and sincere.

There is a lot of micro in aoe4, it just isn't interesting micro to watch (in my opinion, other people may think wrongly differently)

Do yourself a favour and watch the first game between Leenock and MarineLord in the Semi Finals. One of the most intense games and micro around the Sacred Site, both in terms of stopping the clock, maintaining the clock, and engaging against either other with Keeps and Outposts around with the game frozen at sub 30 seconds for a win/loss.

Folks who made up their mind about AoE4 won't change it. But for those of you who can have an open mind and haven't watched high-level AoE4, please do. The Landmark snipes from Mista and the aforementioned Sacred Site battle was some of the best Age of Empires I've watched, apart from the many other quality games overall N4C has delivered.

I hope that going forward we can focus on the positives from this event and allow that to inform people in making decisions about future tournaments, be it for AOE2 or AOE4, rather than the negatives. Not to say that people shouldn't be criticized for making poor decisions, just that there is a difference in value between constructive criticism and simple criticism.
Some things I liked from this event (as someone who hasn't played AOE4 and doesn't know much about it):

- Casting:
I thought the casting was great all around, made the game a lot more accessible for people who aren't familiar with the nuances of the game. Good combination of energy and ensuring the viewers understood what was going on. I actually think Nili was actually the worst commentator at the event, and that's not to knock Nili as I like his casting, but it goes to show the quality of the casting talent.

- Production:
Production value was great, similar to something like the RBW LAN. Smooth transitions, good overlays*, minimal technical problems (those that did crop up were fixed quickly), downtime was filled effectively. I applaud all the admins/production staff for making it run as smooth as it did, felt professionally done for the most part.

- Sponsorships: I liked seeing a wider breadth of sponsors, I think it's important that more sponsors be brought in for tournaments like this to allow for these kind of events. Not that I like seeing ads, but I recognize it's a necessary evil. Hopefully tournaments can continue to diversify funding sources.

Probably some other positives, but these are what come to mind now. I understand the viewer numbers weren't there but hopefully this doesn't kill motivation to do an event like this for AOE2, because I think something of this quality for AOE2 would be really fun to watch.

thats the right attitude! Give him a free pass, so he knows he can do anything for personal gain and get away with it. So what, he invested a big part of the entire AoE tournament money into his own tournament, also rented his own teams location and chose the game, he personally prefered.
Hi didnt ask the community, he doesnt care what we as a community wanted to watch. He was ****in tired of Aoe2 and made some disrespecful comments, because he was sure not to return in the near future. Now even he realizes, he bet on a dieing horse.
So yes, when he will be crawling back to Aoe2, because some gas station simulator streams have more viewers than aoe4, we will tune in and act like it wasn't one of the biggest scams on aoe2.

I'm as big AoE2 fan as anyone that started playing in 1999. I haven't played AoE4 and its current state looks appalling, but the comments on this forum are weird. Do you think Microsoft "loves" any game? It's a corporation.. they have fiduciary duty to optimize value for their shareholders (usually => profit).

I always saw MS's investment in AoE2 in recent years (DLCs and tournament sponsorships) as a way to prop up the AoE4 release. It's only natural that they're spending their $$ now to focus on the recently released game. It wouldn't make any business sense otherwise.

btw, remember that AoE2 also had a ~100k tournament in 2001 that was an amazing Bo1, even the final https://liquipedia.net/ageofempires/International_Tournament/2001#

He made a business decision. We are not talking about community funded events but real companies giving real money. He took a risk, a completely understandable one at the time and it didn't pay out. This happens, Microsoft sinks millions after millions into projects that get cancelled.
Do you get personally offended when your grocery store discontinues your favourite brand of chocolate? Because you and a lot of other people surely sound like you would.

I'm fine with complaining about the prizepool allocation. The company makes a decision and the customers can voice their unhappyness about it. Actually, I really loathe some of the statements by Microsoft affiliated people, like the community is entitled and spoiled brats. The community doesn't owe anything either, in fact, the viewers are the product that is sold and are completely justified in complaining if something is to their dislike. But personal hatred against Nili as if he smacked you everyday through middle school is misguided.

While that's obviously a hyperbole, it's not hard to understand why people care. If it didn't hurt aoe2 in any way, Nili could host a million dollar aoe4 tournament for 200 viewers for all I care.
