Is ketchup salty?

I just learned that my wife and most of my friends don’t consider ketchup to taste “salty”. It’s not that they don’t believe the label that it has a ton of sodium, they just say they would never use the word “salty” to describe ketchup.

I’ve polled more friends and family, and most of them think I’m the weirdo for describing ketchup as “salty”.

AoE community, please tell me I’m the sane person here.

You might be mistaking the generally tart flavor of vinegar? lots of ketchup use vinegar as part of their recipe and I have seen people confuse tart flavors with salty when paired up with starchy foods, like fries, rice, etc.

Yes it is definitely sweet. But it’s also salty!

It's also often put on salty foods, so I would guess you're less likely to attribute any saltiness to the ketchup.

I think its like a soup: you will definitely notice when the salt is missing.

Just like a soup, salty wouldnt be the first description i come up with. I think both ketchup and soup would deserve the savoury tag.

Unlike soup ketchup has a lot of extra tastes like sweet and sourness. These tastes conflict with the saltyness which makes each of the tastes relatively more mellow. That's why you tend to forget that ketchup is indeed pretty salty.
This conflict in taste is very apperent in another example: coke (cola). Where both the sourness and sweetness are quite extreme but you still drink it more easy than lemon juice or sugar-syrup.

I feel like it's well balanced by the other flavours (ketchup is also sweet and acidic) so you don't notice it too much. In fact I'd say for me the sweetness is by far the overriding characteristic

I can live with this. It's not that the other flavors aren't there for me - I just think the saltiness is definitely there as well.

The question came up after the ketchup mascot won the hot dog race at a baseball game I was at a week ago, and I told my wife she was like ketchup because she's sweet and salty.

Her response, which haunts me to this day, was "is ketchup salty?"
