Yes, but there are no S tier tournaments going on currently. Unless you are referring to T90's Titan's league, in which case I could agree that that might still deserve a space on top.

When forums go under they're sold to parties that collect and scrape all the personal details like passwords, emails and socials. That's one of the reason your spambox is filled with African princes and Russian brides.

A lot of the top players and biggest streamers didn't do this place any favors over the last several years, IMO.

I'm sure from their point of view they have their reasons but the truth is a lot of the stuff I saw labeled as "toxic" was really very innocuous.

Yeah this is pretty much it. A ton of valid criticism, generally about DE being ****, unfairly labeled as negative by toxic positive MS simps and streamer fanboys.

I actually think so for the first time ever. Been around here since aocgroup closed in 2008-2009 and even aocgroup was more active than these days. Kind of sad tbh.

And what was even more depressing is I was curious how active aoe2 reddit was compared to here. Saw sometimes 1-3 posts on here from a day, then I looked on reddit, literally like 100-250 posts. 100 times more. Some of the topics weren’t much different than here too, actually an interesting one with Sun Tzu’s art of war and chess vs aoe comparison. Almost made me want to make a reddit account.

Anyhow, one has to wonder what really went wrong on here.

Must have been those bad posters everyone was talking about that did it.

I was also told that the aoe2reddit was going to die because some reddit mods got canned after an embarrassing moderator abuse scandal.

The world is a wonderful place.

You just need to substitute toxic for "someone brought up me using a racial or homophobic slur -- can't have that," or "someone called out that in my role of tournament coordinator I overwhelmingly funded my own/teams tournaments with corporate funding." No need to talk about many of the players/casters prioritizing a new game release over the genre and how that impacted the trajectory of the scene at a time when it was doing quite well. No need to talk about the gate-keeping of tournament casting that has real cash-dollar incentivization implications to lesser known streamers. No desire to talk about the trend of some of the better casting streamers taking their talents to lesser platforms decreasing notoriety of the scene. No need to discuss how outside of Hera, none of the newer/younger player talents have been able to develop a significant following to sustain a scene/player/viewer base that is aging. No real desire by any of the players to make waves in terms of visible, personal competitiveness that was seen in the days of Tyrant/aM, or any sort of intrigue like in MbL/Viper Viper/Hera matchups in the recent past.

Actions by those who "lead," the scene have had more or less a negative drag on the scene for years and have resulted in the current end-state. The kicker is most of them are quite honest and upfront that they're just here to cash checks while they can -- and who could blame them?

But you can acknowledge that those actions do have consequences. Very significant consequences in terms of sustaining an aging scene. But even this discussion is labelled as pish posh, offensive, non-constructive, not fit to be read.

The scene simply lacks entertainment value as it stands.

There are no heroes, there are no heels, and the variety in many tournaments is just which frazzled modification of Arabia will the game be played on.

I don’t completely disagree with what you and Andrew are saying, but I’d say it is also more than that in a few ways. You figure when nearly if not every known figure spoke out about things on aoezone at some point, it means there is something to it.

I did happen to review about all drama topics 2-3 months ago over the past 5 years for example, and noticed some interesting things that could be said.

Must have been those bad posters everyone was talking about that did it.

I think that would be a very short-sighted conclusion. I do think lack of moderation, numerous small things, and pkz selling the place without mentioning it/saying goodbye was the culmination of what looks like aoezone’s demise.

As for reddit, I do wonder why there are 100x more posts though. I don’t really go on there, but some posts I read long ago just kept me away from it. I’ve been too old for social media pettiness for many years. It must’ve gotten better though?

Reddit aoe2 has always been a thing, maybe you just haven't been aware. Reddit aoe2 has typically been a quantity rather than quality center in terms of aoe2 discussion.

I would liken this dissonance to the stream-watching aoe2 folks not realizing that youtube is a far more viewed platform. Reddit also is self-censoring, something that is great for quick one-sentence blurbs/gotcha's, but also tends to end up only promoting certain milquetoast viewpoints.

For example, you can still find many people pouring undying love for how well the developers are performing for aoe2 DE in spite of the insurmountable evidence to the contrary on reddit. These posts of appreciation are generally upvoted because people tend to enjoy the thought of positivity. People can self-censor here -- but it's much harder to ignore a well-written, and well-reasoned bulletized counterpoint to that narrative here vs. reddit, where posts will literally become hidden if downvoted enough and certain settings haven't been manually changed to keep them. Additionally, if you block someone on reddit they are incapable of seeing posts you make and therefore commenting on them, which leads to alternate realities that one can construct where any viewpoint one disagrees with can simply fade into the ether at a touch of a button. In fact, if you know people who would routinely disagree with that viewpoint -- you could curate your topic by blocking them and therefore preventing them from posting at all.

Generally the content is much lower-level/non-competitive scene specific on reddit, but it's undeniable it has had an important role in advertising/engagement/entertainment sustainment of the scene for some time. Traditionally more of the nostalgia/low ELO discussions have taken place on reddit, but given the scenes malaise and entropy/entrenchment of silo'd discords -- those lines are blurring everywhere. Don't know if that's for better or for worse, don't care to make a distinction, it just is.

I have barely been on here in months. Place seems fine, the scene is just incredibly slow and the content more spaced/"community leaders," entrenched with no real incentive to generate hype. The exception has been Hera, who has committed to his own tournament recently and has been trying to maintain the caster/player role.

I think its just the natural way when no new players join the forum and for the old timers they seen every topic before.

When its no need to go here for record games alot of the discussions just goes away, atleast for me I rather go straight to liquidpedia instead, but I do check new post's here if its anything going on.

For reddit I don't visit so much, but I feel every time its just someone posting pictures of their original AoE2 CD, someone making up a new civ or someone celebrating they hit 1k on the ladder, very rarly see any usefull discussion there

There were weekly matchup discussions (made by Ornlu iirc) a few months ago, that could sometimes be interesting, but rarely is there an interesting thread on reddit nowadays, agreed.
