PotkenySomeone left the "under attack" switch on, so it takes up to 5 minutes to connect sometimes.. I'm not surprised, especially combined with the giant advertisements, see other thread.
RayneI actually think so for the first time ever. Been around here since aocgroup closed in 2008-2009 and even aocgroup was more active than these days. Kind of sad tbh.
And what was even more depressing is I was curious how active aoe2 reddit was compared to here. Saw sometimes 1-3 posts on here from a day, then I looked on reddit, literally like 100-250 posts. 100 times more. Some of the topics weren’t much different than here too, actually an interesting one with Sun Tzu’s art of war and chess vs aoe comparison. Almost made me want to make a reddit account.
Anyhow, one has to wonder what really went wrong on here.

maybe the lack of interest in ownership could be the case, sad to see it being inactive, think the fact that the site not always works + loads of ads makes it less user friendly for people to visit regularly
Black AdderYeah it's not looking good, not sure what happened with the new ownership, but looks like milking farm. Always have to be amazed at the shortsightedness and sacrificing long-term bigger profits for the smaller faster ones (or they already expected the web's death and are just here to milk it to the max; wonder how that's working out with nobody here - saves on hosting though).
The worst part of it all, just shows no care for it, after building such a great thing. With multiple posts how it's not viable and he wants to close it, which is absolutely understandable as life moves on, and always continued all it would take would be one serious topic it's happening and I doubt there wouldn't be interest. I imagine it might have been just to get the highest price to cover expenses, figuring he would be forced to "community discount" here, though I'm not sure that would be the case, considering how much money people throw away at nonsenses in this community, and plenty people truly appreciate it here and the work behind it. Probably the general and very concentrated want of certain interested parties to throw it here under the bus didn't help the impression it would be worth it to offer it to the community, or you could go the speculative way and imagine all kinds of other scenarios...

HallejuI'm pretty sure the site's bad performances for months have something to do with it. I've also started visiting much less because of it. Who wants to wait 3 minutes before a page loads?

sheeeshBeen thinking the same lately and thought about starting a relevant thread, thought it is so dead it wouldn't get a single response. Then went to AoE2 subreddit, place felt like a kindergarten with mad kids/streamer fanboys on a sugar rush. I'm glad aoezone exists, even at this state.

Too many factors are involved and it ain't only the technical ones, the community itself disbanded into several smaller communities closer to their friends/top players rather than the game.
Aoezone got too much involved with MS, not directly but most of the volunteers are workers for FE or MS, i personally stopped coming when i read roboboros making a post saying he would randomly ban someone like saying outloud i am the big boss now, another ms worker threatening a dude for making public an exploit here, like where is the freedom of speech? the site itself lost the neutrality, they even added aoe4 sections despite no one really used them and hated that game for all the damage it did to the aoe2 community.
Aoezone also got a lot of hate for being the only site speaking the truth about aoe4 while on all big DS channels and social media the game had potential, all the attacks towards nili didn't help the site, specially cause germans are the first or second biggest aoe2 community in the world and he is like their official informer, to the eyes of those aoezone represents the devil trying to sabotage top streamers or new games.
The site hasn't been updated in years, like why do we still having voobly's top ladders in the right panels? they have been broken since DE times, it would have been better to hide them rather than having them half broken and specially they are meaningless now since all the top players moved.
Following the issue with having as moderators people close to MS or FE is that no one talks anymore about the real issues with the game or the upcoming projects, like the aoe pass that can potentially add +2 attack to sc line for 5 usd monthly or having more aoe3/aoe4 mechanics ported to the game, it seems like the community around is fine with whatever add one they put as long as the top streamers have content to youtube, in other words the criticism has been dead or silenced, apparently no one complains anymore about how miserably is that you are forced to play settings that you don't want in order to satisfy other users, like all the complains that are real have been buried in all aoe2 forums related.

The new mechanics and gimmicks implementation ir really starting to get out of hand. We got a definitive game which is on the verge of losing it's identity and the ''official forums'' really like it, proposing more and more civs with weird mechanics and bonuses, while all we actually need is a definitive edition that won't crash while playing after every patch, get random hotkeys and find a way to pathing.

The site speed has been a challenge. We tried turning on some ads during July and August to see how they would perform, and it wasn't worth it so we are turning those off. Hopefully, that'll help with the speed.
We have times where the server gets an insane bump in CPU usage which causes the site to crash and require a manual restart. As we're dealing with a codebase that has been around for a while, we haven't been able to pin down the issue behind this yet. That is why at times we turn on the "Under Attack" mode to see if that reduces the crashes.
Interesting comment regarding the Voobly widgets. If those aren't needed and no longer work (hard to tell sometimes how everything "works" behind the scenes) then we can just remove those.

Even the owner of the site agrees: this site is death. it was even unavailable for a large portion of the day.
A lot of the top players and biggest streamers didn't do this place any favors over the last several years, IMO.
I'm sure from their point of view they have their reasons but the truth is a lot of the stuff I saw labeled as "toxic" was really very innocuous.
AoEzone may be toxic, dramatic or anything they accuse it to be, for people dare to have opinions on things. A tour in reddit or even worse original AoE forums and you'll find tons of threads about weird gimmicky civs and game mode suggestions that make the game a totally different one and definitely not AoE2 (we've lost the definitive part long ago with all the bugs etc). Don't know how long can devs hold against the will of such forums, given they will be the only ones standing. Hopefully the game will mature and not transform into a weird child of 90's & 2020's.

What about tournament preview or prediction topics or people discussing great matches? Like FreakinAndy winning against Hera.
People do discuss these things in Twitch chats or on Reddit posts, but they get lost after a few days. I know that today's world is faster and there are more tournaments, but we used to have posts here celebrating great games and victories, which now often are reduced to just a short tweet.
Aoezone as a forum is certainly dead. But it can still be an important central place for community news, for tournament announcements, for game recaps, and as a repository for the game's history, which is something that reddit can simply never be.
I hate to always compare to starcraft, but their equivalent website (tl.net) is also a pretty quiet forum but is still useful because it has great tournament recaps with game-by-game breakdowns, even of the small weekly cups, and tournament announcements don't get lost like they do here because they stay on the main homepage carousel for as long as they're relevant (our big tournaments get bumped down for some random $200 German community TG tourney).

Bumping lower tier tournaments hasn’t happened here for a long time. The last few times I’ve asked for a front page spot, it has been placed under the announcement of the big ones on the front page (if there are any). And that is obviously perfectly fine, and the way it should have always been. Even though us smaller content creators appreciate the visibility as well.
If you go to the main page you see Endowar 4, Rising Teams 3v3, and Blue Carbon Cup before Titans League.
