Is AoE2 DE Dynastie over?

I was making a similar comment earlier. However, that might be a bit premature to say.

Daut rightly pointed out today that the SC2 guys were probably grinding in the technical stress test phase, so they are kind of a few days ahead (AOE2 pros were in Heidelberg at the time).

Even with that disadvantage Daut already reached top50 in the Age4 ladder, while Tatoh is in the Top30 already, so it might not be long until they can compete with the very best

I think buzz bleys an old aoe2 players is the higher aoe2player there, followed by kasva, clearly viper and the rest had access to the game before being public, but what makes them so dominant in aoe2 is missing in aoe4, they might reach higher by playing non stop but so will others do, younger and with more free time, it is just a matter of time, but right now some sharks from sc2 are there and more will appear like in any new game, it is too early yet, we will see things better after the first tournament and once a proper ranked system is implemented.

Looks like an unpopular opinion but here we go.
Aoe series is driven by casuals noobs that play campaings and 1v1 the bot in easiest mode. Aoe 4 looks like a noob casual game.
So if casuals preffer 3d graphics and that sort of stuff aoe4 has a big chance of taking aoe2 throne. The only obstacle is the price which is too high compared to aoe2. So if the price is lower and casuals love the new stuff then bad news for aoe2.

Sure aoe2 pros will stick to aoe2. But numbers wont be the same. Add to that the lack of t90 and viper on twitch and we might see a chance of aoe2 getting reckt.

Tbf, aoe4 can be the game for casual players or rookies but it can also be a serious game for pros too.

Despite we seen some flaws especially with the graphic and stupid homing arrows, aoe4 provides many strategic options and allow you to play differently with interesting civ traits. Delhi, Chinese, Mongol and the other civs have some interesting mechanism and the landmark system provides flexibility too. Sometimes im fed up watching meta plays from aoe2, 80 farms and light cavs in late game. But still, i will watch aoe2 games and surely will enjoy upcoming kotd.

age2 fans dont need to worry as if you look at the stats from steam, the core players are still there and the no. havent dropped from avg as well. Age4 and age2 can grow together. Age 2 is defo a game more difficult to play, get punished by minor mistakes, but age 4 can attract more rts fans. They are complementary products, not substitute.

See that's the problem, we don't know what the future holds as far as the competitive scene goes because Microsoft (World's Edge? FE? Whoever) refuse to provide any information about future tournament funding. I don't even blame Nili anymore, I think Microsoft just has no idea what they're doing and are making it up as they go. Kind of sad given how great an esport aoe2 can be but whatever.

This is my hypothesis.
Proof: they put so much money into AOE2 esports right before AOE4 launch. Why? AOE2 core fans surely won't move away becoz of AOE4, how much they sponsor KOTD? Its one of the highest prizes we have seen recently as well right?

Definitely, AOE2 esports won't be affected in the foreseeable future. What makes AOE4 can replace AOE2? add a lot of civs, solve a lot of balancing issues, graphic issues, the game has some potential but its pretty much in ****ed up state atm in terms of competitive scene, they don't even have a ****ing hotkey switching to buildings. Its still pretty much a casual game with some potential to be competitive in the long future.

AOE2 viewers for esports can also be beneficial from AOE4 hype as well... some of the AOE4 players actually from SC/other RTS and lets say 10-15% are interested in age series now, lets see how many new viewers will get for KOTD.

After watching some of the streams over the past few days of aoe4, and then watching the KOTD qualifiers on the weekend, aoe4 has a long way to go if it wants to be as interesting for viewers.

I agree with others that the game is made for casuals who want to play campaigns with interesting cut scenes and historical videos. There's no way it will be a competitive game unless they make a lot of changes or there are a bunch of hidden factors that people haven't discovered yet. Which, I'm 99% sure is not the case based on the interviews that the devs gave about the game before it came out. It was a game made by a bunch of casual for a bunch of casuals. Thank god they had pro aoe2 players giving input otherwise it would have been even worse.

I really gave AOE4 a try.
The last years I watched more AoE2 streames than Netflix, Disney and Prime combined (I stoppes watching normal TV years ago).
But it is hard to follow AOE4. I have absolutely no fun while watching it. I don't get exited or even hyped.

To be honest I think both AoE2 & AoE4 are going to thrive.

We might lose a few AoE2 players to AoE4 but most of the top players will stick around, many aren't even trying AoE4.

On the other hand a lot of AoM and AoE3 seem to have a lot of players invested in AoE4 and with their much smaller scene and player base compared to AoE2, I would say those games are the ones more likely to suffer.

Hell AoE2 might even seem some heavy growth after the AoE4 rush dies down and players and Casters may bring over new fans that joined them on AoE4

If Age of Empires Online, a game which literally died by server shutdown for an online only game, came back from the dead by fans through Project Celeste, then it's very, very hard to convince me that the exponentially more popular AoE II is in permanent danger of whatever. As for Project Celeste, it's even still getting updates, including a new civ some time next year, and weekly show matches posted to the Project Celeste YouTube channel.

The game lives with those who love it! I'll never stop playing, that's for sure.
GL boys and Hera seems to be leaving, but this only will open room for a new top player on the community.

AOE2 is his player base, not the TOP players... How long this game survive without any money on events or without any competion against Viper?

Also, the game is still getting updates, nothing will change for quite some time on this matter.

Just keep playing guys... 20 years from now, will see what game is still alive!

I am usually the pesimistic one but come on guys... If I had penny every time someone said AoE2 is dead during last 15 years, I would be able to buy a flat. Even in worst case scenario I am sure someone out there would just port this game to voobly or find some other way to keep it alive. Yes, for those who only watch streams, it may seem dead but it is still very much alive.
