Assuming they'll stay true for this, it'll mean non-existant MP for controller users, ergo we shouldn't be too woried probably.

They've already stated that a) there is multiplayer for console version and b) there is opt-in cross play, complete with achievements if you beat a PC player.

Listen to min 44:23 in the video,
Isgreen says they want to give Controller players the tools to be competitive against PC players...

Where do we draw the line for "worrying"?

If a kb/m 1k2 elo player can go up to 1k5 due to switching to controller, is that too much? Does it even matter if your opponent has more apm due to controller/kb or not, if winning is not a simple "higher apm = winning"?

If they can get the starting-elo right (which is a big if), will it make a huge difference whether your opponent is using a controller or a kb/m if their "chance to win" is the same?

I don't agree with this logic. It's not just about binary winning/losing. It's about the manner of it

Imagine if, for instance, in terms of win rates controller players were disadvantaged when it comes to macro, but they had some extra bonuses like, dunno, autoscout available on all units, auto convert on monks etc.

You'd still get matched with players based on ELO, meaning that your chance to win would remain at around 50% every game but.. in a bunch of games you could win purely because your opponent had less tools to macro than you, or in some you could lose because your opponent did a super clown monk push on you with auto converts that you had no way of countering (just an example obv, we don't know what they are actually going to do)
Putting aside "balance", would it be fun to be on either side of the stick in either of those situations?

I wouldn't worry about this too much. There is no world in which a controller player would win against a PC player when you have to manage 3 TC + farming + production + eco balancing + xbow micro + mangonel micro, even with auto-everything. Or just imagine facing a tower rush with a controller, damn. This only changes when they give controller players some crazy advantage like +50% gather rate on all resources or something like that, in which case controller players could just go for the unit flood without any micro.

Guessing it's not going to affect most of this forum(I assume we have an average much above 1k ELO), but it very much could affect a lot of players who not as good at the game for whatever reason.

If our Dave can get to 1400 on a controller with no boosts whatsoever, then I can imagine that there'd be many more that could get to 1200-1300 with slight buffs

And that's different from someone out-microing you in a monkwar exactly how? The knowledge that it was not "them" doing it but the help they got from controller? Does that extend to using a mouse with 12 side-buttons and putting monk-control groups there for quicker access?

If you are a slower player, you already have matchups where the opponent will just outmicro you in archer/skirm plays, in early scout-fights, in quickwalling villagers, etc., and if we go to somewhat lower elo, you will get the players who can boom on 3 TC way better than the opponent, so even if he's throwing away units in fights, he can still win due to better economy..

I just have a feeling its more of an "opponent shouldn't win due to his equipment helping him" debate (and that's not unique to aoe2).

I used a control before dave, using xpadder to bin the buttons, but that was back at voobly now on DE with the all selection keys for units and buildings it should be much easier, you guys would be surprised of how many things can be used on a controller if binning the keys properly, just with the pad you can select most military buildings and use the second sticker as 5 more buttons, military production can be set to xyab for most units, all tc selection can be set to rb or lb and jump to single town centers by pressing the sticker, while using both triggers as the mouse right and left click.

I don't know, certain things are just a bad idea, RTS for consoles falls into that category for me.

Btw, it might be a good idea to develop a cheat version for PC that can access auto-features exlusive to consoles. Warning ahead.

Dave can actually be a decent controller-player AoE tournament contender, hope he considers it and we see the bald arrow dominating the xbox stage.

To people worried.
At worst, it will probably be like playing against an extreme AI. I can't imagine queuing everything, micro-ing, effective control groups etc. with controller.

Well doesn't Dave have 1.5k currently with controller? So with all those new things to help controler people might do decent, ofc they should still do worse than keyboard and I don't really see anyone climbing to high elo, although it might be a nice boost of new people idk

I just am struggling to imagine the audience they're trying to capture from the overwhelmingly pc dominated profile.

Don't think the youngin's get as excited over aoe2 as the elder gamer.

+1 to that, I don't understand what is their target profile, 16 yo FIFA/NBA gamer won't spend his time on AOE just because it is launched on console. And moreover if they can't find same fluidity of play, they will downvote it to hell.

I think the point is that creating console port is much cheaper than a new game and you ll always find people who will buy it just to check it out.
