how to start after, ehm, 15 years?

So, before buying anything. what are the current latest versions?
I assume I would need "Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition" to play online?

You are assuming correctly, although in case you have problems with it there are also very much playable multiplayer modes on Age of Empires II: HD/2013 or old AoC with UserPatch and WololoKingdoms through Voobly or GameRanger

I agree with Jarvin. You should think about what your computer can handle first, then decide on whether you want to play what is played in most tournaments now or just any AoE 2.

Best version is DE. The QoL feature are just too good. Once played, you wont wanna go back to the original game or to AoE II HD. I also like the match making system for ranked games, the new civs, the frequent balance changes. So like Jarvin said: If your computer can handle DE, just buy DE. DE Is also the platform at which the tournaments are host at the moment. Also most pros are playing on DE. But is it not only pros, also noobs. the match making systems makes sure you play against equally skilled players. So i will recommend buying DE if your computer can handle it. Personally, my notebook (15 inch) can handle it easily. It isnt even a gaming notebook.

If your pc cant handle DE, there are some other options:

- Do you still own the original game? If yes, go and download voobly and play there. This was the most competative platform before DE came out. Games are played with user patch, this will be automatic downloaded if you install Voobly and join a game.

- You can also buy HD. It will give you more civs. You can play at steam if you want. This is more noob friendly. I dont like the lobby. It is ugly. You can have another feeling. Other option is to go to Voobly and use AoE2 Tools to convert your game so you still can play at Voobly. You can use the new civs of HD too at Voobly if you use the Wololo Kingdom mod and own HD. Most game are played without the mod.

- If you own the original game, you can play at gameranger too. The still play at some old patch. I dont really know how big the community of gameranger is. I wont recommended gameranger. The facilities are pretty bad. No rating or something to make sure games are balanced. So for me gameranger is a no go.

If your computer cant handle DE and you still own the original game, i will recommond playing at Voobly and not buying HD.

mjeh, I noticed the DM level nowadays is really bad
But playing on a laptop with a tiny keyboard and not having played for over 10 years, well, 0-3 loss against a decent but not a good player

Haha i did download the games out of curiosity. Definitely some ring rust there!

DM level is not so bad, Daywalker and Paladinz still knocking around, Frank war paladinz and then come back and tell me the quality has dropped! haha

But then maybe i am getting old and slow!
