How far does your rating fluctuate?

I am just curious if its just me who plays like a 1700 on one day, and like a 1200 on the next.
2-3 weeks ago I was constantly rated between 1550 and 1650, I gues "usually" I am around 1550, whatever that word means to me. I didnt play too much 1v1 in a while, also I am a little sick and it was the first game of the day etc., so tons of excuses but I just lost a 1v1 arabia as Persians against a freakin 1450 and DIED TO MALAY KNIGHTS...
as you might have guessed by now this post comes from a lot of frustration, but I am also courious, since my rating fluctuates over a span of 200 Elo, is it the same for you or are other players more constant and stay in about the same elo range?

Well I'm usually staying in 100 elo range, I'm a steady player, although I do not play ranked when im super tired or drunk etc.

Well there are quite a few cases when people with highest rating of 1950-2000 are in 1750 range or even less. Although not sure why or what they do, I would imagine if you do different strats and maps elo fluctuates way more. As I play basically only arabia and random civs and doing only 2-3 opening that I know pretty well I don't fluctuate much.

Although if you get matched more with those 1.9k+ highest score you often can feel they are faster, than actual 1700-1750(with lets say 1770 highest), so it's a bit on a luck too who you meet, maybe that malay guy was a smurf and doing dumb strats or he completely cought you ofguard with having only skirms... Losing one game against lower elo means nothing, I usually watch if I can been average of my elo or higher, if beat often bit higher players than myself I know I'm about to climb. I mean you often get lucky and get opponents like -50 elo, so is much easier to climb this way than getting +50elo opponents.

I used to comfortably sit within 1650-1700
I'm currently in the low 1500s somehow, a few times breaking into 14000s

I'm swimming around 1750 and 1950, so It's also 200 pts for me.
I often play random strategies on ladder, but anyway it become pretty easy on 17xx for me and pretty impossible around 2k)

Personally, I always thought nearly everyone had two different kinds of ratings: stable rating and tilt rating (never mind peak, no one is constantly peaking). Stable rating always seemed within a 100 range (1550-1650 in your example), tilt rating was always -100 for me (-250 at worst, -150-200 average). Been my experience in two different games I played at similiar ratings. Used to also know someone that when he was rusty, he actually could be -300-400 below the rating he had when he was in shape.

Also, sounds like you just underestimated the guy tbh. Since you were beyond the level, you saw no way you could lose to him. I think relaxing is always a curse that way, always have to be on guard.

my peak was 1793 about a year ago. i remember a couple of guys who gatekeeped 1800 are nearing 2k now, while i am down to 1650. one day i woke up after a long drunken night and found i dropped 100+ elo while playing drunk age 11, so it definitely happens. I have dipped below to 15xx but in my experience its a lot of how tryhard i wanna be and how long i feel like i wanna grind. at 15xx, most people crumble to multitasking as I have a decent enough APM. 16++ is usually my comfort level and if no one picks mongols and goes insta lame, if i play optimally and with proper decisions, its hard to lose than it is to win. at 17++ i have to play full focus, fast, every decision matters and every second i have to be aware of what's going to happen next, what i want to do, where i want to hit, will he expect me to commit there, can i greed it out, lots of questions.

Didn't feel like tilting either, it's just like I lose a couple games, go to bed, come back next day, lose some more. Might be related to subconscious factors like stress level from the job or something

If my mouse hand is too cold I am -25% APM with continuous missclicks. Games become frustrating because I know I can play so much cleaner.

I also have this thing whereby sometimes I feel like I am not having as much overview of the game as I normally do. When I am good shape, even in stressful situations, I can still feel 'in control' of the game. Other times, I don't feel in control at all. I feel like I don't really no know what I am doing and everything I do is one step too late. This can be a tiredness/focus issue maybe.

Also I feel like nowadays there is less difference, I remember when I was a teen after gym it used to be quite difficult to play, always felt slower, nowadays it somehow doesnt affect me as much, maybe cuz im already slower idk haha.

However would be interesting to see some analysis or changes on how eAPM is calculated, as now there is too big gap on the real eAPM. Currently 50 and 80 eAPM guys can have same speed, just one guys keeps clicking same stuff 3 times. Also I can feel it in ranked games too, as I'm not a buttons presser, I often have average like 35eAPM and my opponents often have 80eAPM and usually I can't really see difference, maybe in scout war. Often after checking their eAPM I'm even get surprised, as in game had feeling like opponent was reacting slow, lost many vills by raidings, had lots of unused resources... Which by the way also can make you feel like you are slow if your opponent is very fast.

Is just quite weird that numbers differ so much. I think aoe2insights show Memb's eAPM around 50, mine usually ~35 and I might be biased, as I don't see myself playing, but feel little bit faster. However where I shouldn't be biased, Andrei_2i for me feels much faster than Memb and has eAPM also around 50. Yo eAPM also I think is around 50, I never watched him streaming, but I'm pretty sure playing against him 99% of people feel/would feel behind in almost every step. I mean don't get me wrong, if he had 100 eAPM he would be even bigger beast, although sometimes maybe thinking for a second is better than clicking on non important stuff. But in short, I feel like at this point eAPM doesn't even show who is faster player, often it just shows who is clicking more, maybe it could somehow be adjusted to discount some repeated actions and stuff like changing formation, need something like eeAPM=extra effective APM

I always take the eAPM stats with a grain of salt.

People have different habits of macroing and ones might be more beneficial to eApm than others.

Imagine two players building villagers.

Player 1 might click 'all tc' hotkey then queue up 3 vills which are evenly distributed amongst 3 TCs. Totalling 4 commands which I imagine all contribute to eAPM.

Player 2 is oldskool and goes 'go to tc' 'build villager' and repeats that cycle two more times. These are 6 commands which I imagine also all contribute to eAPM.

This can result in 10-20 eAPM difference in favor of player 2 without effectively contributing anything.

I get what you're saying. Most of my games I play with less than 35 EAPM (around 1800 ELO) and I don't feel that slow :D

i definitely agree EAPM dont make any difference if both players have proper decision making and macro skills. I average 80-90 EAPM on aoeinsights and i can sometimes feel i pull ahead in elongated feudal ages/early castle age/late late late imp. Especially in a mirror strategy, like both of us going scout-spear or kt-monk, I always am super comfortable because i trust my speed, as long as i react properly, and macro cleanly, i feel like im in a good position.

But if a game is decided by pure decisions, especially vs unconventional strategies, I do struggle as I am wayy too meta and I 100% know its what loses me games. Like even when I lose games on arabia, I know when/where my opponent outplayed me, could be when I slipped up in micro in crucial battle, or was playing fully open and opponent knew he could take advantage of it, laziness, etc etc. So it's never about APM, but rather decision making and greed to some extent.

Even a 40 EAPM player can beat me if i dont play optimal and let him dictate the game where with minimal clicks, he can put himself in a position to spam or win simply due to me running out of steam (like not walling, not scouting properly, playing stupid and overcommitting)

I actually do fluctuate a lot, from time to time I have long losing streaks where I lose many games in a row, but then I am able to recover in one similarly long winning streak. I am not really sure why do these streaks happen, but me getting frustrated after few losses and then both playing worse and resigning faster because of that frustration is definitely making them longer.

I can relate very with shakal, if I have a bad evening I can go down alot by tilting but then go on 10 games + winning streak few days after. Think around 150 ponts my rating normaly fluctuare but can be as much as 300 points between big tilt and tryharding revenge when im rested, my top lvl about 1550 and low 1250, normaly I sit between 1350 and 1450

I notice if I wanna push rating I can only play days im off work, if I play every evening during the week I have atleast a few days Im way worse then the others and I can't put it to anything else then work. I can feel rested and great but then loose at my low lvl while other days I feel tierd but still beat much stronger players so I don't really know why, but if I try to push rating and only play on days off it normaly helps

And another variable for me is also timezones and particular people queuing. Like if I play early in the morning I will most likely match people from China/Vietnam and I won't get my preferred US server, so I will have to play with a decent amount of ping if its Asia server. Sometimes makes a difference. More importantly tho if i keep matching with someone who's playstyle i dislike 11, like a mongol picker and instant lamer/goth fwd vil lamer or berber vil rusher, i will resign 3-4 times like idgaf about my elo

Made the mistake to check my own aoeinsights graph () and apparently fluctuation as in irregular variation reaches 300 elo.

Regular swings during times I actually play regularly, it is only 100-150.

My Elo fluctuation is around 200. Sometimes I have long losing streaks and then again long winning streaks. I always wondered why that's the case because it is sometimes very frustrating. Reading this thread it might be more normal than I thought 11

I think if you're a player who prefers playing the same map types or even the same map all the time e.g. Arabia or Arena only, elo fluctuation is not as common as if you try to play all maps out there with different builds and strats.
I for myself played closed maps only for like a week in the current map pool and lost like 250 elo in the process, just because i'm not that experienced on BF or Arena. But to some extent it's the same on my home maps, just like in sports you have good days and bad days and a certain fluctuation can be found at all levels except maybe for the very top level, the top 25 players in the world are just in a league of their own if they play serious.
