Hidden Cup 3 Main Event is here!

I'm excited to announce Hidden Cup 3 will be casted using an overlay created by the Capture Age team! The Hidden Cup 3 overlay was designed and built specifically for Hidden Cup 3 and I have been funding the development time. They are hoping to make a more generally usable version of the overlay available to others at some time in the future, but they cannot make any guarantees. I will be posting videos using this over the next few days and feedback is very much appreciated as we close in on Hidden Cup 3!

From Microsoft's contribution $35,000 will be used towards the prizepool and the remaining amount will cover costs & promotions for the event. For HC2 I spent roughly $10,000 out of pocket and Microsoft's generosity will ensure all parties involved in HC3 get paid for their work without extreme stress on my part. I am contributing $1 per Twitch Subscriber at conclusion of HC3 (minimum of $5,000), meaning current and future supporters of the channel contribute towards the event.

Put it another way, if we accept the 14% value, it's very close to 16.67%, the probability of rolling a six in any given dice roll. So Syphax you're saying more or less that if you roll a six in a dice game that you're very suspicious that someone rigged the dice by changing its weight on a side or whatever. Doesn't that seem a bit out there?

Even going with the 9% number, that's akin to rolling a two or a three with a pair of six sided dice in any given dice roll. You are considering this to be suspicious to the point of being rigged. It's not logical.

I don't understand this discussion honestly. Even if something would be rigged, would it really matter? Due to the nature of Hidden Cup being more about entertainment for the viewers than about figuring out who the best AoE2 player is. And you see, even the top players in the finals doesn't really guarantee thrilling games with Viper even apologising for the 4-0.

 

One day people will be able to discuss a topic and share their opinions without the typical strawman fallacies, tribalism, feelings of superiority and general assholery that we can find in every discussion.

Even if it's not so hard to respect others... I reckon it won't happen in my life time.

Robo already stated earlier that he tried recording it for hc2 but didn't have the video hooked up. So I continue to think he's moral enough to not rig the seeding for hc3 or otherwise. A recording can be not perfect proof of his not rigging it either when it comes down to it. Ultimately I don't think "just stream it" is justification for saying someone could've rigged it. It's just too paranoid. Especially when you're talking about a situation which occurs regularly and normally with random chance, as it seems to be.

But yeah, you can look at anything and say, "well there was foul play involved" and never be disproven technically. You can however show that it's very unlikely for that to have happened.

 

Even though there is always some way of rigging any draw, the main reason to stream the draw is not that it would be 100,0% sure to be fair (even though it would of course increase the likelihood of it being fair), the main reason is that we probably wouldn't have to have this very inevitable yet incredibly boring discussion. So while I personally don't see much reason to suspect foul play so far, I really do think Robo should consider casting it in the future.

 

Also note that @robo considered recording/streaming it (he tried so for HC2 according to his own statement), yet didn't do so for HC3. For this he hasn't offered any explanation despite posting in this thread. It is also particularly curious considering we had this exact same discussion for HC2.

A retrospective on the ‘seeded brackets’ versus ‘random brackets’ debate:

Rank or randomize; that is the question. we all like to see hard-work, dedication and talent rewarded with its just deserts... but what would life be without those little unplanned and unexpected explosions of shock that shake us from our comfy routines?

I was of no strong opinion for the bracket selection for HC3. Generally, I prefer seeding for larger tournaments; it builds tension (and quality) through the rounds to (hopefully) crescendo with an exhilarating final between the two best players in the tournament. However, every now and then I can support tossing the ratings out the window and shaking things up. In a ‘Hidden’ player format, this seemed like an ideal opportunity for an unranked random bracket.

But then Red Bull Wololo Cup came along and announced that the quarter finalists from HC3 would be automatic qualifiers. Fair enough, you might say. Those 8 have proven themselves. But one of my reasons for supporting an unranked bracket is that the impact of a lucky/unlucky draw is ‘limited’ to a single event. Your progress (and prize money) may be impacted by an unfortunate pairing, but at least you can make-up for it next time... But now that unfortunate round 1 pairing in HC3 didn’t just affect your result in that tournament but is also risking your participation in future tournaments.

I can think of a couple of players who might be justifiably peeved at the way the bracket turned out and thinking to themselves that not only did that impact their progress in HC3 but is now impacting their participation in RBWC.

Looking at the final bracket of Hiddencup though, I think Nicov is the only one that has a right to be upset about this influencing the Red Bull Cup (and maybe vivi to a lesser degree). In my opinion the top 8 players of Hiddencup are actually pretty close to the 'real' top 8, so it's not that unreasonable to use this results.

If you take the "seeding" (pre-qualified players) from Hidden Cup, it should be vivi who has a disadvantage from it as he is the only one losing in a "top 8 battle"

 

If you would have told me 3 years ago that AoE2 would cross 10k viewers on any stream I would have called you crazy. And yet the game continues to grow and flourish as the months go by. I'm really astonished with the numbers HC3 was able to reach over the last four days both on Twitch and also in player numbers (records for both HD and DE!) I feel we are very spoiled because each crazy goal that is set continues to be reached.

Thanks to the entire team for working hard with me behind the scenes on everything. There was so much time and effort put in behind the scenes by so many, and while I thanked them at the tail end of the stream I'll be doing so in more detail soon (both publicly and privately.)

I'll likely make a lengthy post summing up HC3 and giving the community a more in depth look into everything but for the time being I'm going to rest and reflect. Hope everyone isn't losing their minds too much during this quarantine and that HC3 helped a bit with that. I'll have to leave it at that for now but will make my post soon.

I just want to know how much money each top pro player wins in this year's tournaments. I'm also going to add subscribers who have $ 5 on their streams ... to see how much money they made per month this year ...
