The interest in AoE2 in the last 2 years was supported by the fact that AoE4 was on the horizon. But AoE4 is a disappointment to a lot of people, I'd say to the majority of AoE2 community. The prospects for AoE franchise are quite modest and I find this decision by Hera reasonable. It looks like we are getting past the golden age of AoE. It's just too unlikely now that AoE4 takes off as a big e-sport, the game isn't good enough for that. So Hera's looking for a fresh, interesting streaming content, it may work out for him.

League of Legends is not exactly what I would call fresh, interesting streaming content. Its 13 years old and thanks to a lot of patching and power creep well past its peak in my opinion. 11

ill give a maximum 2 months before aoe4 was available to general public; was in few channels where casuals asked the streamer if he was hyped for aoe4; most of the questions were after red bull wololo 5;

What about a winner stays on type of showmatch?
-First week ladder #1 vs #2, winner gets the crown and grabs lets say $200.
-Second week the remaining highest ranked player at the time challenges the champion.
-Rinse and repeat until new patch.
-Problem is the very top players might not be that motivated as couple hundred dollars arent that much.

Really not a bad idea at all, though you'd want to do something to make sure people don't just camp their spots by smurfing or not playing to ensure that they can participate. As far as money goes, a few hundred bucks is a few hundred bucks. In starcraft they have these weeklies that take 5-6 hours, tons of series, etc. and the winner gets a couple hundred bucks. Pretty much all the top players sign up except for the handful that have crazy career earnings.

he will be back, when he realizes the competition is way too strong to be a pro gamer there. He can't live on mediocraty in LoL, because his viewernumbers will drop and then he'll be back to AoE 2 again.
I remember larry said in one stream he had like 4-5 k elo in Dota2, which was (idk the current ranking system) very high and he still was miles away from pro level. It's incredible difficult to get to pro lvl in those kind of games, since millions play it.

I am 4k in dota 2 and am nowhere near semipros, let alone pros; when we meet a 5k in the game, he usually carries and dominates; i think heart said he reached 6k mmr in dota; however, lately more and more established pros pass 12k; under 8k no team, no mater the tier , will look you up..

admiral bulldog is a successful dota 2 streamer, even though he dropped in rank quite hard; mind you he is an ex pro and winner of The International back in 2013; afaik other streamers with lots of viewers are at pro level

AoE2 DE premiered 2 years and 3 months ago, that's where I got 2 years from. I count DE as a new chapter, because we upgraded from peer-to-peer connection into dedicated servers. AoE4 was announced in 2017 and Microsoft was interested in releasing DEs and sponsoring tournaments, because they had AoE4 in mind. If they hadn't planned a new game, the investment into DEs for 3 previous games and in tournaments would've been smaller. We've had great time playing and following the AoE2 scene and the game was massively improved since DE launch, because Microsoft was building up the franchise to carry over this public interest into AoE4. That didn't work, but we have a very good AoE2 DE now and the competitive scene rose to new levels. It's partially a result of AoE4 being announced and built up as the successor.

Good for Hera to follow what he's passionate about. But hope he returns to laddering aoe2/4 soon.

I think it would be disingenuous to say this isn't a hit to the community... like Hera or not there's no denying he's been one of the most important players/streamers in this community for at least the last 5-6 years now. He'll be missed and I hope he comes back at some point.

Glad to hear he'll still be playing major tournaments, though. That's the most important thing, IMO.

Last 5-6 years? I think I heard of him first in KotD 2, which was in the beginning of 2019. His first really big result imo was second place in NAC III, which was just before the pandemic.

hera has been involved in aoe2 scene even before liereyy i think. He used to stream hun wars in voobly days 2018-early 19..... his big breakthrough was in DE though

Arguably you could say Hera's first big result was in 2015 as part of Team Canada, but 2018 was when he started getting results in 1v1 events

Is that for Liereyy? I thought he was around for way longer than that. I remember the "Who is number 2?" tournament, where he already felt past his first prime due to net being very active. And that tournament already is a long while back.

Nah, Larry wasnt that great at the time. I still remember Viper jokingly mocking Daut for losing to Larry in one of the Escape events.

I can't tell from all these responses whether he is attempting to make it purely as a streamer or whether he is harboring any serious hopes of making it professionally. He is still relatively young and already has played a substantial amount of LoL so theoretically with his deep RTS experience it should not be particularly difficult for him to get his macro to an elite level. I can't speak for how his mechanical talent might translate given the playerbase size differences but he certainly shows enough athleticism to not immediately discount the idea. Disappointing in some sense but in another it's hard to blame him for looking to greener pastures with how poorly Microsoft has handled the AoE franchise. It will be interesting to see how this pans out.

The interest was supported by the fact that Microsoft was throwing more money into sponsoring content like community tournaments. AoE4 being on the horizon was just the strategic justification for this investment. I doubt most people getting back into AoE2 would have cared if that investment was coming because Microsoft thought they could grow AoE2 into a big game rather than because Microsoft thought that building up some interest in AoE2 would make AoE4 sell better.

If it is between Daut and Viper, they make joke out of anything don't take it seriously, since 2017 Viper always say Liereyy is the most dangerous opponent.
