I have an idea that is probably far fetched, but it's worth asking anyway because it would be amazing if it was possible. First, it would require a HUD that gives live counts of resources collected, population and technologies researched. Because the latter two already exist in the spectator HUD, I assume the first one can be done as well. Secondly, once a game is recorded, there would be an option for the player to play a RM game with the exact map generation as well. As far as I know, there are a limited number of map generations possible for each map, maybe something like 10000-20000 maps. Lets use Arabia and Jordan as an example.
So, the player downloads Jordan's rec. Then, a single player RM game generates the exact same map, and the player plays through it. On the HUD display proposed, resources collected and population are live on the HUD, while technologies are shown on their own HUD just like the current spectator feature. This way, a player can see how far ahead (presumably) Jordan is on that particular map.
I think it would be amazing for perfecting build orders. Obviously, the main drawback would be that you could only truly practice the map once for real, because on your second time through you would know where to send all of your vils. But doing a first run-through blind then a second to correct your imperfections of the first try. It think it would be amazingly beneficial.
It sort of reminds me of "ghosts" on mario cart where you have to basically beat a time trial race. Any chance this is possible?
