GG etiquette

Hi guys,

Been playing aoe since I was a kid but just got into multiplayer with release of de.

I have a wierd question about etiquette in online games.

Who calls the GG? The player/team who's up/winning or the one who's down/losing?

All the games I've seen cast the loser calls GG. Makes sense cuz you're surrendering.. but u had a guy give me crap that he wouldn't resign until I called GG which didn't make sense to me. Any thoughts?

You have to type 105 when you're winning. GG when you're losing.

the normal (nice) way is the loser calls GG first, usually before resigning
the winner then replies with GG

Normal is loosing say gg, than winner answer with gg.
If great game you can also say gg wp if you want.

Yesterday the enemy said '***************** looser' after he lost the game. I dont know why... Maybe it is the new etiquette.

One time recently my game crashed right after my opponent resigned and before i could type GG back, so if you are out there: I'm sorry.

Also, i find it very annoying the overly dramatic "you are victorious" screen with sparkels and all, which you have to click away from to type anything.

Loser calls GG, winner then replies GG. Usually you call GG before you actually resign, since if you resign first it looks a little bit like a ragequit.

I usually add a "WP" ('well played'), especially if I win after a long game, since I think it's good to make people feel better after a loss they fought hard to avoid. Kindness costs nothing.

Also, sometimes players stay behind after the game is over for a few minutes to talk about the game. This can be really good to work out where you went wrong / get advice / just generally talk about the match. So don't be afraid to ask questions after the gg is called.

Maybe its just me, but I always found the "wp" if you are the winner a bit arrogant 11 (along the lines of, you played well but still not good enough to beat me HA). I do write wp myself though if my opponent did play very well and I lost because of it.

I get this. I find it a little bit patronizing, but it's probably not meant in such a way and I'm being a sensitive soul.

Usually if it's completely one-sided I won't say wp for that reason, don't like the idea of someone thinking I'm trying to insult them when I'm just trying to be nice.

Or you can say "well played <opponent's name>" before resigning like Jordan did in his Bo21 vs Viper :P

I guess it depends. When both go random civ and it ends in a super tight game even though there is a huge civ advantage, a "wp" is completly fine I think.

thanks this is helpful. yeah it was really wierd... it was a 2v2 arena game and my team was up. His ally had resigned and it was clear we were winning. He was spamming chat saying "until you type gg i will not resign" and stuff like that... it felt backwards lol.

I can only guess that they were salty about losing (maybe he thought his teammate had resigned early or something?) and wanted to be difficult for you. It kind of feels like he'd played too many times vs those people who call gg for you when they're winning (one of the most annoyingly common kinds of BM, for me. Either it's premature and I'm still in with a chance of winning, or the game is just becoming over and they're impatient. If your time is precious enough that me resigning 30 seconds later is so upsetting, then you shouldn't be playing AoE) and was trying to do a dumb inversion of that?

Sounds like you were just unlucky enough to play against a bad loser, honestly.

There are bond to all kinds of players in this game, sometimes you get to meet nice players, sometimes you don't. Personally I write gg regardless how the other team/player behave.

No one is forced to say anything. If ur losing , just resign and when someone types "gg" You should reply with "ez".

Well you don't have to say gg at the end of a game. But you also don't have to say "please" or "thanks" in real life.
You can use gg as sign of respect towards the other person. Thats the way I compare it usually.

Yeah it feels like he had called the gg (or at least thought he did) and was upset that you didn't respond with gg (which is etiquette)

I was just hoping i didnt totally misunderstand the way this works

I’ve always thought it to be very sporting when my opponent types GG and keeps playing, to which I reply GGWP and also keep playing. To me it’s like sharing a pot of tea on the hill, mid battle, with your enemy before resuming hostilities. Then when the match is decided more G’s, WPs, SMDs and 2ez’s are cordially exchanged. We wipe the blood and sweat from our brows and carry on as brothers and sisters.

In a team game, consult with your team before calling GG. If you call GG and then your teammates tell you not to quit because they are winning their side, it makes you look bad.

yeah i agree. It was weird bc his ally just resigned. I never saw a gg from either. Im assuming my ally didnt either as we both kept playing. at that point it had become lopsided. My guess is, like another user pointed out, he may have typed in ally chat.
