Hi there,
honestly I dont even know why I didnt do that earlier, cause I love the game - I want to start playing AoC online and maybe try to get to a point where I'd even participate in some tournaments...but I'll see how it goes.
Skillwise I'm probably in a weird spot, because I barely ever played an online game of AoC (but have a lot of experience with Starcraft 2 and even more with the battle for middle earth series), but I still feel like I'm not that bad. I watched a ton of pro games, I'm familiar with the basics, just need to get more practise and experience.
So I'm not looking for advise on how to learn the game, as I'm pretty confident that I'm already on a level where it's more about improving details and getting experience, rather than learning basics.
When I last was thinking about the game AoE2 HD was just released and it seems to me that there have happened quite some things.
AoE2 HD has an official expansion with new civs (which I like) and for AoC on voobly there seems to be an balance tweaker mod with some changes.
So my first question would be: Is there a version that nearly every competitive player is playing, or is the community somewhat split?
It doesnt seem too important to me, because I think in Age2 switching between those versions isnt incredibly hard, because most of the changes are just about military and the macro part stays nearly the same.
I own AoE2 HD, as well as a regular copy of AoC. Do you have any advice where I should play, or does it just not matter too much?
How "difficult" is it to get everything installed for AoC on voobly, cause I think there are quite some mods I'd need to install as well (***** wood, balance tweaker mod, maybe more?)?
My next topic are competitive games. having played some other rts games, I know that I don't like mirrors (both players using the same civ)...unfortunately it seems that nearly every (competitive) game in Age of Empires is a mirror match - why?
I know the balancing between civs is not perfect, but it also seems to me that those mirror matches are not only a result of players picking the "best civ", but also a result of players agreeing to play the same civ, right? Cause if it wasnt for the later we'd probably at least see some more huns vs mayans or stuff like that.
I know Age of Empires 2 isn't like starcraft, where every race is completely different and pro players have to focus on one of them, but I still think it could have some more variety.
My plan is not to change the community, probably people have reasons to just play mirror matches. My question is if it would be possible to just decide for myself to go for different civs (and therefore to accept likely being at a slight disadvantage because of the matchuup)?
I know that works on casual levels, but would that also work for high ladder play or even tournament play, or would people there force me to play mirrors all the time?
Thanks for your help =)
