Gate Kill in AOE2

Hi,

With the original AOE2 I remember there was a way to kill units when they go through a gate. You would wait for a unit to pass through the gate, then click close gate and the unit would be killed in one shot, regardless of HP.

Relics also looked different to today, they looked more like a cart.

I don't see any mention of this anywhere online, including the AOE2 wiki pages. When was it removed?

Are you referring to AoE1? Don't think these things were ever in AoE2

These have never been part of AoE2 ever since its first official release. One or both may possibly have been in an alpha or beta version. Relic carts are a scenario editor unit, and a standard unit in AoE1 (called artifacts).

Yep, memories overwritten by and mixed with dreams and thoughts of what would be cool, along with memories of AoE1.

EDIT: Although I guess "Mandela Effect" refers to this happening as a mass phenomenon.

Everyone I know who I play AOE2 with says the same. I can't rule it out but I remember building a maze for go through and be killed. It's a bit weird to have such a specific memory of a feature of a game.

I think I was playing a (pirated) beta version that an uncle had installed on a computer. I also remember a developer saying they tried implementing gate kills early on but abandoned it. But there's no mention of it anywhere in beta versions anywhere.

It could be another game, but I've tried searching for RTS games from that era with elephants and gates and none seem to match what I remember.

Yes! That's exactly how I remember it.

Was a pre-release version distributed or leaked to the public? I didn't know anything about AOE before I started playing that version so its strange that I ended up with it.

That was in an alpha or a beta indeed, I remember playing with that. I don't know if it was public though.

There was one playable scenario that crashed if you moved the minimap to a specific place. You were playing as Japanese and the current wonder was the castle back then if I recall.

The bootleg copy I played on had that feature, buildings looked different as well
