For Fun Tournament - Unus Imperium

Hi guys! I would like to invite you to Unus Imperium. This is a for fun tournament and open to any ELO out there

We already have 230 Sign-Ups, looking to make it Ro256.
We will pick Top 256 1v1-ELO and remove wrong Sign-Ups.

The Idea:

Single-Elimination. Each player gets to pick ONE civilization and has to use it throughout the entire tournament.
Until Ro32 you're allowed to use your favourite civilization. From Ro32 on, Civilizations will be re-ordered, so we can have 32 different civilizations.

Main Settings

Tournament is BO3 except Semifinal and Finals. Each player gets one Home Map (Can be ANY of the official Random Maps in AoE II: DE. As the third map, the Lower ELO can chose 3 maps, from which highest ELO picks one.

Players will schedule their own match-times. For initial rounds 3 or 4 days will be given. Later rounds will be played 1 round per week.

Top 8 ELO-Players already have a place in Quarter-Finals

I don’t think so, as Mayans will be outmatched by many civs on water or even hybrid maps. I’d rather go for Lithuanians, Portuguese, Hindustanis?

Hmm, Iirc, Mayans, whilst not having the best water eco bonus, do have an excellent water tech tree, other than the lack of cannon galleys(I think they have everything). On water maps, their extra vill won't really come up, except as a defense vs landings. Perhaps their longer lasting res could lead to farmcounts which can be delayed for longer as well. I'm not really convinced by their closed land maps though, considering they should be weak for onagers, and don't have a real power unit for more closed spaces, except for maybe eagles?

I think they might lose in earlygame vs strong earlygame water civs, or civs with important water-related bonuses, but they should be able to hold their own vs anyone else, I think.

A civ which I would probably enjoy would be Spanish, but that's because I don't mind playing them in open land maps, which would be their weakest setting. But for a more general playerbase.

I might say civs like Chinese, which have a lot of versatility, but would be weakest on closed land maps, I think(Lack of a strong power unit and a weakness for onagers+SE). Nomad-style maps could also be a problem, but I think they should manage it relatively decently well, especially if you practice for your weak points.

Byzantines are the archetype of a civ which is viable everywhere, but nowhere the absolute top. I'd say open land maps are their weakest point, and they were still seen all the time in KOTD. I think they're a safe bet, and probably the best overall pick, I just suck immensly with them, so personally I wouldn't pick them.

Mongols could be a nice one as well, especially if you're an aggressive player. Perhaps the same case could be made for Britons, but I think Mongols are more variable over all. I think their weakest point would be large water maps such as Islands,

Those would be the 3 civs I think would be best in general, especially the latter 2, though of course it would also depend on which maps exactly would be included.

I thought Vikings and Portuguese would get more love by being very good in land and water as well.

For now we have over 250 sign-ups and these are the top civilizations picked:

Where can I see the map categories? Liquipedia mentions "Maps can be picked from four map categories." but only lists the maps as far as I can see. So no map categories are listed.
