AOE-II Feedback for Gate Placement

Gates should be rotated during placement by:

  • moving the gate relative to nearby walls (current system)

Hi! At the moment, when placing a gate (or palisade gate), you must move the gate relative to nearby walls in order to rotate it, which can be awkward and time-consuming in certain positions. If the mouse wheel could also rotate gates during placement, would that be acceptable or too much of a gameplay change? If this fix was made, it wouldn't affect your current mouse wheel hotkeys either. It would only temporarily override them during gate placement (while you're moving around the gate to drop it on the map). Other than that, your mouse wheel hotkeys would work normally. Just collecting feedback :smile:

Obviously the mousewheel rotating would be a massive improvement I think.

But how would it work for the people who do not have a Mouse3? Just like the current system?

Yes, the mouse wheel would just be an extra thing. The existing system would remain as-is, so you'll always be able to move the gate around to get it to rotate near walls.

Btw: i have the mouse wheel for idle vills, but if this is implemented I would definitely change the HK

If the current mouse wheel HK would still work and only in case when placing a gate be overwritten by the rotate gate HK that would be great I think.

I would love t to see hat addition, its so annoying to waste time building walls to place properly a gate where u need it.

you could use the tab key as an alternative. In CAD drawing software hotkeys for this function have been in place for 25 years. I was used to use TAB for this and frustrated about AOC impossibillity to rotate.
And please also fix wall placement (by switching between 0/90 degree walls and 45/135 degree walls)

I can already see in my minds eye the next-gen quickwall-traps with 4 gates surrounding eg. Kings or melee units, when people practice to do perfect squares fast. Maybe it'll bring about a new villager-flanking maneuver 11. Walling in enemy forwards, buildings and vills alike, will become much easier and faster with this I'd think. Not that it already wouldn't be possible to use gates for that, I've just not seen such at least.

Can't really see downsides, .14.
