Indeed, that graph says absolutely nothing. The physicist inside me screams in agony.I always appreciate a graph where only one axis is labeled.

Question is that which EW variant they're going to use? Red Bull or vanilla?
You act as if more than 5% of the community have ever played dm 11I cannot think of a bigger middle finger to the AoE community.
In RBW maps there are more farms at the start and (maybe?) dock start on water maps- I remember that I tried to train for RBW2 and RBW3 with quickplay EW but it was useless because the start was very different. What is the difference? I have never seen anyone play EW or heard talking about that they play it besides RBW nor ever played it myself.
Could be possible - would fit into the business model of Red Bull.I'm sure that Red Bull tell them to delete DM. They want EW replace DM.
So Red Bull killed DM.
There is no real split. EW is the same game as RM except with an accelerated start. It is like DotA2 turbo mode, which people play when they want something quicker and/or want to practice mid-late game without having to worry about laning. It does not encroach on RM as much as it augments it.Well, that's a tough one... Individually, I can understand both decisions.
Adding an EW queue is surely worth trying. It is an interesting game mode and a good attempt to get into faster action without taking away too many strategic elements. Splitting playerbases is certainly a risk as EW and RM largely attract the same players but the RM playerbase is large enough for this to not become a bigger issue.
If they make separate map pool, it could end in players moving back and forth every month to play on the "better" maps (which I don't think would be a problem).
I just hope that this step comes along with a somewhat serious attempt to balance the civs for EW - guess what, randomly removing bonuses is NOT balancing.
Many people in the comments on the announcement pointed out the lack of official promotion for the mode which I think needs to be taken into account when considering the apparent lack of growth. As for DM: I never played DM so can't judge this too well but from what you can see on some streams imo the playerbase is really just not big enough for matchmaking to ever become a good experience. And the number of players did not show any sign of growth, being at around 1k for ages now...
This is because whoever is managing the AoE2:DE project is not doing a very good job.The frustration of DMers is obviously understandable. While the community is quite small, the frequency of tournaments and promotion efforts shows that it is absolutely alive. It feels weird to announce this whithout offering any alternative - quickplay, ranked lobbies, or even just stating clearly that they are working on something...
I remember much celebration when T90 achieved that number at some point during HC2 so yeah...Besides, as many have already mentioned, the timing is quite unfortunate right after DMWC conclusion. The viewer numbers of DMWC (10k+ depending on who streamed) were obviously lower than for RM but definitely not bad, showing that viewers are also interested in DM tournaments from time to time.
Quite the opposite in fact. Red Bull Wololo uses fewer farms and features a different distribution of villagers from the feedback and experience we've gotten over the many instalments. I hope they take big inspiration from the RBW maps.In RBW maps there are more farms at the start and (maybe?) dock start on water maps- I remember that I tried to train for RBW2 and RBW3 with quickplay EW but it was useless because the start was very different.
If they do not take direct balancing inspiration from them, being highly competitive and consecutive tournaments, idk what they are thinking. The map pool should be completely different to RM as well, with focus on more open maps which have been the theme in RBWs.Quite the opposite in fact. wrong, there was at least one seperate balance adjustment for DM.There has never been separate balance for DM so why would there be for EW? Bold part is correct however.

I admit I laughed hard at that graph tho

Chill, dude. You act as if more than .05% of the community have ever played EW...even fewer outside of Redbull events.
Hope they don't start balancing the game around EW.
EW ratings (if anyone even plays) will be a shitshow for months since they will be artificially brought up by everyone's TG ratings.
