AOE-II Eagles vs cavalry - who wins from cost point of view?

Eagles have bonus vs cavalry (+2/+4 if I remember correctly).

Is the bonus enough to make Eagles cost effective vs cavalry?

Fully upgraded eagle warriors, kill cost-effectively everything from Feudal Age, with the sole exception of M@A (you should raid villagers, hit and run, instead of fighting man-at-arms in similar numbers)

Fully upgraded elite eagle warriors, both Mayans and Aztecs, kill cost-effectively everything from the Castle Age, with the sole exception of Goths long swordsmen (you should raid villagers, hit and run, instead of fighting long swordsmen in similar numbers).

Eagle warrior from castle age, die badly to knights, so you need to add pikemen and/or monks.

Fully upgraded Mayans elite eagle warrior kill even paladins cost-effectively, but it's by a small margin, and in practice it's better to have halberdiers fighting paladins.

Fully upgraded Aztecs eagle warriors win hussars cost-effectively at the beginning, with the exception of Mongols Hussars (but keep in mind that Hussars don't cost gold, so when gold is low you can be wasting a lot of gold fighting hussars with eagles)

For example, Mongols can use Hussars as meat shield, while elite mangudais kill elite eagles (even from Mayans).

Eagles kills cost efficinetly paladins only if you count the gold/food as same resource

70resource eagle vs 135 resource paladin.
But it loses in gold efficienty, and also ussualy is harder to mass enough to win the fight. Also depends on which paladins and their upgrades that you are facing. You need to have more than 2x more FU eagles than paladins, also you need to have unlimited/more gold as said halbs are way better and the obvious choice.

Definitely the albs are the natural counter to paladins, and someone should always prefer that option.

it depends on so many things... you have to analyze what you will gain and lose for each particular situation. sometimes you will just retreat and make halbs, other times you need to hold the paladins for a while... but since you are making eagles you have barracks and researched the infantry blacksmith updates, it's silly not to make halbs when enemy is making paladins :roll:

Knights > EW, Paladin > Aztec EEW, Mayan EEW > Paladin for cost effectiveness. And the Mayan gold lasts 20% longer so in effect they are even gold effective. And I usually won't bother switching to halbs when doing Mayan EEW vs paladin unless lets say, he is having a clear advantage already and massing palas to POP limit. The reason why I won't generally switch is that, once EEW army defeat palas they can put a quick end to the game since they can just obliterate enemy eco after winning army-wise. Making halbs may be "safer" but it usually drags the game on and let's say if he is huns and mixes in HCAs, pure EEWs will end up being better.

Mayan Eagles slightly lose to Paladins if we consider all factors.
However, a mix of a few Mayan Eagles plus many halbs (or even many eagles and a few halbs) is a better option vs Paladins than pure Halbs since
- Eagles resist longer
- Halbs kill faster
- Faster and stronger eagles come in front and block Paladins from targeting weak but deadly Halbs, while Halbs deliver more hits each before dying.

If he is Huns and mixes Palas with something else, such as HCA, you can safely attack with pure Mayan eagles.

Eagles eagles...why don't you talk of the best infantry unit of AoC! Elite Berserk who sure are cost-effective against Paladins with their attack and melee armor equal to paladin's one with 3 times less the gold!
