Man, this site IS Age of Empires... We definitely need AoEZone!
How about every tournament get a little piece of the prize to support AoEZone?
Like 1% I don't know... many tournaments will get enough money to keep this alive...
That seems like an incredibly high cost, given that.. in the end AoEzone is just a forumIf i shold guess the monthly cost running aoezone is somewhere around $100-150 including internet, spare-parts, power and hardware-upgrade now and then.
Maybe its costly i dont know... the internet alone is about $60 for 100MbThat seems like an incredibly high cost, given that.. in the end AoEzone is just a forum
are you using a homebuilt server? Did you perhaps consider moving it to some bigger hosting provider?
Even my OVH server with 0,5tb of storage costs like ~~30 USD a month.
Moving AoEzone to a place like that would definitely save you a lot of money and time
Either way, happy to see you back at it, keep up the great work and thanks for everthing you've done for us so far <3
At first i was running aoczone at a hosting-provider. Problem was that there was always some problems doing that. Like PHP-packages that i needed was missing and they denied to install it. Other things like restoring backup cost extra money etc, so i decided to host my own server and backup system. Ofc that might cost a bit more but i have 100% control over all the infrastructure. That seems like an incredibly high cost, given that.. in the end AoEzone is just a forum

What are the languages/environments you are working with?At first i was running aoczone at a hosting-provider. Problem was that there was always some problems doing that. AoEZone is just a forum, but it have many features that often requre some power. Example is parsing a zipped pack of 100 recorded games, extracting all info and save it, and when people are accessing those games the map for each game have to be generated from the saved data. Takes some time and power.
I the start... when there was more than 200 users online on aoczone the server couldnt handle it. Now with newer forum-software and more powerfull server 500 user are no problem at all. I think using a shared hosting-provider that throttles the power and traffic is not a solution i want to use.
The environment is LAMP (Linux/Apache/Mysql/PHP).What are the languages/environments you are working with?
Multiply that with 100 when a user uploads a zip-file with 100 games inside. Would take almost an hour to processThe tool has the user upload a compressed savefile from their game(from 3 to 20 megabytes, 40 to 100+mb unzipped), yet it doesn't take more than 15-30 seconds to parse even the biggest of them.

I dont know... maybe i am wrong.. but it works very well the way it is and i dont want to change it.
I have been running this site for like 12 years now and i think i will be able to do it for some more years without changing the infrastructure.
If I just think about it maybe there is a possibility to make a tournament with "free" streaming policy and a prize money but donations of all the streams are going to this platfrom capped at a specific amount you would need to run in money neutral at least! something like that.
Yes, once per month is a good idea for a small ~3 h event. The players don't necessarily have to be top 5-10 players, but we should have 1-3 of the bigger streamers streaming it, e. g. Viper and Memb (but there are many nowadays who could; just should be at least one who can attract some 100 viewers), then I'm quite sure $50+ can be raised.Great idea, make every month a AoEzone tounament/showmatch, with players playing for free and donations going to aoezone. Nothing big, sometimes 1v1 sometimes tgs. I think nearly all pros would participate in these matches cause they love aoezone as well and many would like to donate like this!
So if there was an option cheaper than the 5$/month I would do. Maybe some others as well?
