I suppose the business background of EGCTV helps. Unlike aoe2 folks who are mostly streamers-turned organisers, he actually seems to be a successful PR/business guy on his own. At least he can afford spending 10k on aoe3 and even more on aoe4 out of his pocket

I think it's simply a case of egc guy has some spare cash which he is willing to use as he pleases. There is no clear upside on investing so much in aoe4 with how player base keeps on declining

And money attracts money, if you already have 50k from your own pocket then finding another 10-20k is lot easier as opposed to having zero own investment

Memb keeps telling that his "socials" (twitch, youtube etc) are important when trying to get sponsorship for tournaments.
The implication being that he's reaching out to sponsors for his tournaments such as KotD.

The main income from AoE4 is new game sales, and then future expansions/DLCs

There just aren't many people purchasing AoE2 compared to AoE4, and you have to sell a lot of DLCs to match 1 new game sale

Also, the only person I have seen who has been successful pulling in outside sponsors is Nili. Maybe people should ask him for advice

Advertisement has its own value. Viewership objectively influences advertisers.

That is the concern of Microsoft rather than outside sponsors though. If this concern is being taken into account the sponsorship pattern should be the opposite of what's been alleged in the past few posts in this thread.

That doesn't make any sense, I don't think sponsors like start.gg, Surfshark or steelseries care about having control, they just want to get as many engagements or sales as possible.

if they want as many engagements or sales as posible, tell them that aoe4 is a faliure, in players and in viewers, and age2 is still strong, in players and in viewers.

The sales is only of value for Microsoft though.
For other sponsors, it makes absolutely no difference (or close to it) whether or not the game sells copied.

Their primary motive is to sell their product, therefore viewership is the primary factor for any sponsor.

Also, what's the recent data on how much aoe4 is selling?

well, i dont remember if i already say this, but is not more logical to talk about age4. its public knowledge that is a worst and less popular game than age2.

i want to talk about the production of sc2 tournament and the viewers. right now im watching esl sc2, the final upper bracket, and only has 7.2 viewers. wth? with that production aoe2 would have like twice that number easyly.

i hope MS understand that age2 is more than sc2. at least in viewers in america.

There is a lot of excitement in the SC2 around the MS acquisition. Lots of hope that MS will treat it as well as AoE2 (relatively)

Sadly they're still one of the better Big Corps when it comes to treating AoE2-3 (aoe:de is worse, and aom:de doesn't exists yet), and that doesn't mean MS is good, just that the competition is even worse.

Isn't it kinda narrow-minded to only see Twitch as the only place where Viewers matter?

Are we even sure that covid boosted the numbers that much relative to today?

The number of twitch viewers have relatively been constant since mid 2020, i.e when the corona started.
Even if there was an immediate boost in viewership due to lockdowns, which was true back then, twitch itself has grown enough meanwhile to offset any decline solely due to ending of lockdowns.

Plus, aoe2 received it's best numbers during RBW5, and that was when most countries were done away with lockdowns.

IMO the decile in viewership in aoe2 is a result of primarily these two factors:
- T90 and Viper shifting to Facebook. T90 especially dwarfed everyone else in viewership.
- The momentum hard stopping after release of aoe4, with an especially dry scene for 4-5 months.

BoA viewership is pre DE? Based on what? Before Sunday, I would've argued that for a maybe, but then the GL match happened and aoe2 category was consistently at 12K-14K during the entire series.

Aoe2 was always growing rapidly, irrespective of corona.
NAC3 had 25K+ viewership before Corona, and NAC was definitely less popular than HC. The best you could argue is that HC3 would've peaked at ~45K instead of ~60K

Youtube viewership was ALWAYS considered for counting live viewership.
Why wouldn't you consider Facebook viewership, when the two biggest aoe2 streamers shifted to facebook? Like usual, do you even think before posting anything? Probably not

Used to come on aoe2 channels and gloat about aoe2's doom, aoe2 was for boomers, aoe2 fans were dudes stuck in the past with their 2d game instead of moving onto the modern superior game that is aoe4 (KEKW) etc.
There were especially a lot of these types in the chat during KotD

Tbh, people have been saying aoe2 is dead or thought it will die because of x since literally the mid if not early 2000s. Pretty crazy to see how the game has endured through some of the bumps and where it is today. I’m almost convinced that the only thing that will actually end aoe2 is the apocalypse.

I had a quick check in Membs viewer numbers during early phase of Boa2 and Kotd4 and these have been quite similar to early stage in boa3 now.

What I would assume definitely hurts total viewership of e.g. Boa3 is the fact that T90 is not on twitch anymore. His presence would probably add another 5-8k viewers. His following was huge on twitch and a lot of them have maybe left Aoe2 live events completely with his departure.

To be fair this has very much gone the other way too right?? Half this thread has been about why AoE4 won’t make it in one aspect or another, and since it’s predominantly AoE2 fans on aoezone it is hardly a surprise exclusively AoE4 fans aren’t here much.

Also the AoE2 “ doom and gloom” talks were mainly spurred on by AoE2 fans for a while. It was not the AoE4 community, many were VERY quick to attack from within when things got awkward, and to disgusting levels. Remember when Viper & I leaving Twitch was supposed to damage AoE2’s chance at sponsorships & prizepools? Now the largest AoE2 prizepool is confirmed for October, tons of events to keep track of alongside great prizepool sizes, and more that you guys haven’t heard about yet. Remember when Nili was attacked endlessly and painted as AoE2’s enemy? He’s played a big role in what has come and will come for the franchise, and is another important part in what’s keeping us rolling. Remember when AoE4 was going to be the beginning of the end for AoE2? It is absolutely not killing AoE2 and I’d argue it has assisted it atleast in prizepool numbers.

While I understand where the initial worry stemmed from, I don’t like the us vs them mentality. Surely we are far enough along now to realize it doesn’t have to be that way. I hope both games do well because lots of people have a passion for them, and that’s that.
